These are just 2 of the possible phones I'm looking at getting.

Now without getting into technical specs such as CPU, does either phone have much over the other one?

Where I work, we sell second hand phones (among other things) and I've had a play around on both when I get a chance, I can't really see much difference, so I'm guessing other than size and slight spec differences there isn't much?

Any features or compatability with apps that differ with either of them?

Note 2 has the SPen and all the associated apps. It also has split screen view. You get a couple of extra stock apps as well if I remember correctly.

I really loved mine, but traded it in for a HTC One.

It's funny how a certain companies marketing has made ppi the only consideration of how good a screen is

I was just curious. My OH has an S3 but I've never spent a lot of time with the note 2. The note 2 and s3 have the same resolution but the note 2 has a lower ppi, so wondered how they would compare. I loved the screen on my Note 1 and I always wondered how the note 2 would compare to it as the note 2 has slightly lower resolution and ppi. I think knowing the ppi is useful but the term retina is misleading because, retina is whatever Apple says it is. The retina screens on the iPhone and ipad are nice but the term doesn't mean a lot. Resolution makes more sense to me. When I was considering the s4, the 1080p screen was more important to me than the 440ppi.

PPI and resolution and important but the quality of the actual screen is just as important so having a high res/ppi with a poor screen means nothing.

As does claims for retina that the ppi must be 300 etc just rubbish.

see above for the difference between the two

Note 2 all the way. I have one. I had an S4 and got rid of it after 23 days 'cus I missed my Note 2. My Son had an S3, I preferred my Note 2. The screen is great, and the size is very easy to get used to.

Even thinking of getting a Mega 6.3...but that's another story.

I used to own a Galaxy Note 2 and my girlfriend has a Galaxy S3.

The Note 2 was a significantly better phone in my opinion. It was, and felt faster, which it would do with a slightly faster CPU and GPU, and double the amount of RAM. It has more features. I also agree that the screen was better, it might be a lower PPI on paper but the pentile arrangement of the S3 is noticeable and served to lower the perceived PPI. In fact, despite it having a lower PPI than my Nexus 4, it was better than the screen on that.

There were only two things I could fault about it. The first was call quality, which was subpar, and the second was the size. Yeah I know, I bought what was the biggest phone on the market and complain about the size.... but.... I thought I could live with it. I couldn't. It wasn't big enough to be a proper tablet, nor was it small enough to be an effective phone (to use one handed, and the like).

It was a superb device though and the battery life was incredible, I miss it sometimes. My Nexus 4 that replaced it is a nicer thing to use, mainly because of the smaller size and the Vanilla OS, but the Note 2 was a stunning device IF you can live with the size.

Well I decided to go with the S3. They seemed pretty close to me, plus I could get a better discount at work on an S3 than the Note 2 so there was some motivation there.

Doesn't the Note 2 have 32GB of storage and 2GB RAM? The standard S3 has 1GB RAM/16GB storage, 32GB models are hard to find. The S3 LTE model has 2GB RAM so shop wisely!
