Ending weeks of speculation, Ben Affleck has been set to star as Batman, a.k.a. Bruce Wayne. Affleck and filmmaker Zack Snyder will create an entirely new incarnation of the character in Snyder’s as-yet-untitled project—bringing Batman and Superman together for the first time on the big screen and continuing the director’s vision of their universe, which he established in “Man of Steel.”

In the announcement, Silverman stated, “We knew we needed an extraordinary actor to take on one of DC Comics’ most enduringly popular Super Heroes, and Ben Affleck certainly fits that bill, and then some. His outstanding career is a testament to his talent and we know he and Zack will bring new dimension to the duality of this character.”

Snyder also expressed his excitement about the casting of Affleck, noting, “Ben provides an interesting counter-balance to Henry’s Superman. He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne. I can’t wait to work with him.”

Good choice IMO.

Ben Affleck, really? Wow!

He wouldn't be my first choice but i suppose that's the best they could do under the circumstances since Bale didn't want to do it anymore.

Still, he's a solid actor and he does have screen presence.

Saying that though it's funny that Oscar-winner Affleck will be the bigger name actor over Cavill in the sequel.

I dunno what to think of it myself.

Guess it's a simple 'wait and see' job

Surprised he's taken the role tbh....fan-boys are already going mad over it Jeffrey Dean Morgan was my previous choice.

Affleck's spot-on for Snyder's above description for the character. I'm certainly looking forward to it more now than I was when Ryan Gosling and Orlando f**king Bloom were being linked with the role

I'm not entirely sure about this, I'm struggling to picture him in the role, but many people said that about Heath Ledger as the Joker and look how that turned out, so I'm not going to write it off because I'm wary of the casting. Since his career resurgence as a director I've loved everything Affleck has done though, so hopefully he puts in a good performance as Bruce Wayne/Batman.

He has definitely evolved as an all-round filmmaker and actor. Rumour is his deal came with him directing and starring in his own Bat-Film.

Affleck from 2006............

Ben Affleck will never play a superhero again, after being "humiliated" wearing a costume in Daredevil three years ago. Speaking at the London premiere of Hollywoodland, which sees Affleck playing TV Superman actor George Reeves, the actor admits he hates wearing tight lycra. He says, "By playing a superhero in Daredevil, I have inoculated myself from ever playing another superhero. Wearing a costume was a source of humiliation for me and something I wouldn't want to do again soon."

Hahaha! That's hilarious!

Wonder what made him say yes after all these years.

He isn't a bad choice but we will have to wait and see, I imagine he will get to direct an eventually solo Batman film and perhaps Justice League.

Someone offers you the chance to play probably the biggest and most popular movie superhero ever, you're not exactly going to turn it down are you? Plus I imagine a few truck loads of cash will had sweetened the deal.

The Internet is going to be fun to read for the next few months, the reaction to this news on other sites seems to be overwhelmingly negative.

Of course, we all get that but still the guy just won an Oscar. In my mind i thought he'd think that's beneath him - comic book/superhero franchise and everything that comes with it incl. all the hormornal fanboys! Lol.

I'm just surprised he took on the role but like i said Bale wasn't going to come back so i guess he was the best person they could get to say yes.

I get how this works for the story they want to tell in MoS sequel, but a mid 40's Batman for the eventual Justice League film is an odd choice.

I've seen some good ideas floating around. This is obviously an older Batman so any future solo films could be prequels played by a younger actor therefore bypassing an "Affleck is too old" issues. It would also mean Affleck himself wouldn't have to get too tied down with the role and only have to make the odd cameo here and there with a JL film.

I see it going in the other direction, in a far future scenario where he will pass on the torch to his protege - Batman of the Future.

If they were going to do that, why not go for TDKR's Joseph Gordon-Levitt and ask Bale for a cameo. If he won't do it, use the wonders of narration....

Also, Znyder wouldn't do that, he's a comic book fanboy, and the fans would be pissed that Bruce Wayne wasn't Batman...

I'm keeping an open mind. Any actor who followed Christian was always going to have a lot to live up to.

Good choice in my opinion however I wonder how much screen time Batman will get, will we see Alfred and Bruce much - considering this is the sequel to Man of Steel I expect Superman will eat up much of the screen time. Very difficult to balance this one...

He's a great director but not really a good actor IMO. I'll wait and see though. Marvel/Disney must be breathing a sigh of relief today!

I'm a bit shocked by this. I was hoping they'd go even older, Josh Brolin was touted at one point and that sounded aces to me. And Affleck...I've never especially liked the guy. I don't find him much of an actor, but then I haven't seen Argo. I'm a bit numbed by the announcement at the moment I think. Although many don't, I actually really dug Daredevil, both the theatrical and the director's cuts.

It could be good. Fingers crossed.

Don't get me wrong, I'm no casting expert, but this does seem like an awful decision.

Daredevil anyone?

Kevin Smith has just had an accident in his pants.

I don't mind this news. I like Affleck a lot. He'll do a good job.
