About 10am a budgie arrived on my window sill I have been trying to catch it since but it moves quicker than me and when my dogs see it they chase it away.

Have shut the dogs behind the dog gate so they can't get it and waiting to see if it comes back.

Any advice on ways to catch it welcome as it looks a bit bedraggled and has been pecked all around it's rear end by the looks of it.

Someone has lost him and he needs to get into a safe place !

Aww poor thing. Just keep your windows open and dogs away as the barking may scare it.

Hope you can catch it. Good luck.

If you want him to come into the room, can you position a mirror near the window to entice him in? Then he may think he's got a friend (or foe) and come into find it. You close the window (hopefully the door will already be closed!) and then you have a chance at getting him.

Possibly bedraggled because everything is moulting at the moment but also perhaps because other birds have been mobbing the stranger in their midst.

Good luck.

I hope you can catch it, we once lost 2 buggies when moving, the cage door opened whilst carrying it, and even though we seen one of them in a tree and we put cage out with food we never got them back.
Its quite upsetting to think other birds will harm them.

It's in our bedroom now, husband is creeping around to close the windows so he/she is trapped. Will be easier once he is contained in the room.

Neighbour has a box ready and is going to have him if we can get hold of him as she has a spare cage then we can try to find his owners.

I can hear my husbands voice and it sounds like he is calming him down so fingers crossed we will have good news in a few minutes !

Yay got him, but him is a she apparently. Neighbour says she looks OK just lost a few feathers from rear and a little bit pecked on left side but no real damage. So now just need to find who she belongs to.

might be worth putting a notice in the local paper or at your vets surgery

probably glad of the freedom

caged birds is one of the cruelest ways to keep a pet.

its a prison just - imagine being kept in a room all your life on your own when your instinct is to fly and congregate in groups.

awful

I don't disagree but better to be safe than pecked to death by the magpies round here I think.

Don't even know if she comes from a small cage she may be from a big aviary like my husband used to have. Plenty of room in there for his finches.

She will not be glad of the freedom, she will be scared, will have been picked on by other birds, will not have been able to find food and would want to be back to the home that she knows. Captivity is something that ALL pets have, have you never kept any pets?? I have budgies in an aviary, they have plenty of room to fly and are settled and content, the alternative is a horrible death, which is better?

Well done for catching her, hope you find her home so she feels happy again. if not, you may have to get the wood and nails out!

Cats and dogs are domesticated animals.

Domesticated animals relate more to humans. Have instincts adapted etc. Dogs for example are group animals and strong relations to their owners, have freedom of the house and outside + walks etc. As do cats. (although you do get types who cage them up and leave them alone too)

Keeping a bird in a cage in a house or even outside in a bigger cage is wrong.

my step dad used to have a huge aviary we had Budgie's finches and burls and cockatiels , had about 100 birds in total all were rescue jobs as we helped out the local Animal rescue center ,

I just have the one cockateil and he has a huge cage but is out for most of the day only goes in the cage when it is his bedtime

I had a budgie some years ago, he thought he was a little human, he would sit on my shoulder most of the day, nibbling my lip, he talked, he knew his name, he was my best friend and was always there waiting for me when I got home. I cradled his little body as he died
Both budgies add humans can get a lot from keeping them and training them , beautiful intelligent companions.

The budgies I have are rescue budgies and are not able to be hand amed, but they have a life that is comfortable.

Always good to meet a fellow vegan. I don't fully agree with you though it does depend upon the circumstances and the conditions.

I have a budgie and he is never in his cage unless he is eating or drinking. The cage door is always open. He has perches on the walls.

Budgies form strong relations with their owners as do most birds. A happy budgie sings.

No can't seem to find where she comes from but my neighbour is happy to keep her if we can't find them.

We had a budgie years ago who was just the most amazing fun. He would swing on the ceiling lights so from outside it looked like we had a disco on the go. He would land on the dogs back and get taken for walks. He was only in his cage at night. He would take himself in and slam the door shut.

We still laugh at his memory 25 years later. He was just great fun. He often got out of the house and sat in the tree shouting his name. Just took the dog to get him in as he would swoop on his back all the time.

Smiling now at the memories.

Aw that is really good. So glad it escaped a horrible death by the local birds. They are gorgeous wee birds, love them. We had 2 when I was a small child. Strangely they both died just after my grandad (we lived with him). Nothing sinister happened it was just as if they knew he had gone and they didn't want to carry on without him. God I sound a real nutjob!

They do pine for people. Birds get upset very easily if their status quo becomes different.

I agree about birds in cages, dont like it at all but this little budgie wouldent survive for long in the wild.

They can survive fine as long as they keep a low profile, I have had two budgies coming to my feeding table for the last two years
