The One Plan has cross-network inclusive minutes.

Would it also work on a PAYG SIM with an Add-on, preferably the All-in-one 15, comes with 300 mins, guessing those 300 mins would be fine to use for said purpose?

Yes, it works on PAYG too. Whatever add-ons you have apply in Feel at home countries too, except tethering.

Just back from Washington and New York. Brilliant to be able to use data and not worry. I know data is set at 25 gb...used only 700 mb in 6 days.

how were speeds for you?

Heard some people say they were unusable so interested as I am going to New York for 6 days, then Los Angeles for 5 days and San Fran for a day so want to be able to use my phone abroad for data.

Things like email, sharing photos, maps etc....

Cheers

T-Mobile US is the best in New York I know that AT&T have a lack of spectrum really on 3G there.

I wish this was active last year when I was there.Had to buy T-Mobile sims to use(they were OK but not as fast as Three in the UK).

It's fine for normal everyday use. I had no problems in NYC using it. Just make sure you have roaming enabled before you leave.

Were you able to stream anything?

I am just back from a week in Austria and "Three like home" worked VERY well for me on a £10 PAYG booster (the 500 Mb, 100mins, 3000 texts one).

It was very nice to leave "data roaming" on and not to worry about call costs back to the UK.

Even without a specific add-on the "free 150 Mb Internet on every top-up" seems to work as credit for "Three like home" for Internet use!

Can I ask a simple question? If I take a Three PAYG sim to USA with some credit/booster on it and make a call back to the UK or to a USA number how is it charged? ie is like a local call rate of 3p in the UK or is their £1.40 a min roaming charge for voice calls what it'll cost?

Thanks

“Feel At Home is an additional service that lets you use your UK plan allowance or Add-on allowance to call or text the UK, use data in selected destinations abroad and benefit from lower-than-usual roaming rates. This applies to everyone on our network, whatever plan or tariff you have and whether you're using a phone or Mobile Broadband device. If your plan doesn't include call, text or data allowances, we recommend you buy an Add-on to be able to fully enjoy Feel At Home.”

From that I'd say it only works with allowances. If you dial a USA number it will be charged as a standard UK to USA call at whatever price the international charge is in the UK.

The easiest way to look at it is to think of it as you being at home.

There are a number of cheap call providers that have a UK geographic number you can dial, so you call this from the USA for free (out of your allowance) and dial the USA number, and you pay 1 pence per minute for the call.

Unlike UK/EU, often it does not cost more to call a USA mobile rather than a USA landline as they do not have the dreaded termination call charge mechanism.

My wife calls Sweden a lot, and with AYCE data can obviously call via Skype direct - but she has set up some numbers to be accessible on virtual numbers. These come out of her allowance, but she has 2,000 minutes anyway - and it means it's a LOT quicker to dial them.

I can't remember how much she pays Skype to be able to call Sweden for free, but I don't think it's much.

I never thought to try Skype when I was in Sweden (replace Sweden with USA or any other Feel at Home country), but assume it would work fine?

One of my friends has something similar to that she calls her family via Skype who live in America and Canada she pays Five pounds a month for unlimited calls so for five pounds you could with Three use your phone completely unlimited in America. Not an awful lot if I am honest if you can afford travel America you can surely afford Five pounds to be be able to call for the entire trip.

Yep that simple suggestion makes complete sense now you say it!

I think I was trying to over complicate things in my mind.

Not strictly true, the termination charge still exists but the mobile phone subscriber pays it instead of the caller.

All US mobiles have a "geographic number" so it costs the same for the caller and in fact they won't know if they are calling a landline or mobile, but the mobile phone subscriber will also pay to receive the call.

I was down in Dublin yesterday roaming on 3 Ireland.

Speedtest gave me 8.24 down, 1.75 up with a ping of 65. However, I wasn't able to stream a short youtube video without it buffering every 5 seconds!

Had the same experience trying to listen to 5 live in Dublin back in Nov - the stream kept breaking up so much that it was unlistenable.

I've had problems streaming on and off for a few days in the UK too, despite enjoying some pretty decent speeds on tests.

In some cases, toggling mobile data has worked. Otherwise, going to flight mode and back has.

Sad to see some of these issues, which is akin to what using mobile data was like on Orange before it merged into MBNL. The times where there's a halt in data flow completely, despite not moving in or out of coverage (and in fact having excellent coverage throughout).

This is, I imagine, basically an unanswerable question - unless some Three insider fancies spilling the beans on future plans, which I imagine they don't if they're keen on keeping their job! But I'll ask it anyway.

Are there any clues about further countries that might get the Feel Like Home treatment - France, Spain, Portugal, Germany?

All of them should I think, the whole EU should soon if rumours are to be believed.

Whilst I'm not at all clued up on the detail of the EU's roaming plans, it's not quite a simple as that,

BBC News - Europe plans to end mobile phone roaming charges

Quote:
“Under the plans, companies would be banned from charging for incoming calls from July 2014. All other roaming charges would be scrapped by 2016.”
