Nothing will convince that Eccleston doesn't have a bad attitude towards the show. He's no better than Tom Baker was when he left.

It was a bloody joke.

If he shows no respect for the show why did he even bother to send a message to be read out at the BFI event?

He is a disgrace. If he can't be bothered being in the 50th, the least he could do is lend his face to something like this.

Tom Baker was similar, but that was principally because he thought HE was the doctor, nevertheless always kind to fans, and happy to praise the show.

Eccleston is just an up himself twerp. Go on Chris, do another crappy Hollywood trash kiddy film, you moron

You clearly haven't met the bloke and talked to him about DW. How DARE he have a successful Hollywood career!

It isn't eccleston's job to grovel at your holy shrine to Doctor Who whilst you watch on, being waited on and fanned by your personal slaves. HE did the show a favour, NOT the other way around.

He doesn't owe you or anyone else a damn thing. He was paid to do a job, he had a horrible time, he moved on.

I wish all the stupid children like you would take your false sense of entitlement and shove it where the sun don't shine.

Probably due to an imminent change of shot, it looks as if we have Smith, Tennant, Hurt and a Jedi Ghost version of Tennant on the far right. Wearing glasses.

If anything, I think Eccleston's attitude toward the show has softened considerably recently.

It's no secret he was unhappy during his time on set; so it must be understandably difficult for him to look back on his time through 'fan-tinted spectacles' - no matter how proud he is of the work.

He's an 'intense' person by nature - and initially was always very prickly in interview, whenever the topic of Doctor Who was ever broached. He obviously wished to distance himself from the experience. And if it was unhappy, who could blame him? Especially as it would seem priggish & unprofessional to slag the show off - even if he felt justified in doing so.

But in so much as he's now happy to speak of his time as the Doctor - met with Moffat & considered appearing in the 50th - and sends personal messages to fan events, proclaiming his love of the show - I think is evidence of a tidal change of his feelings about it.

Perhaps with more time & distance between him and an unhappy period in his career, he may one day agree to appear. Maybe for the 60th?

Who knows?

I've read some bizarre theories along the lines of him being in the 50th after all and the BBC's statement was a fib, etc.

The usual mindless Ecclestone bashing. Its people and posts like this which will only drive him further from the show if he has any sense. Shame on him for having the nerve to just treat it as a job and not bow down to the bidding of the M & M s who have nothing better to do than spend their days starting threads about whether that one woman who was in the back of that one shot is related to the Rani/Sally Sparrow/Etc.

I am that guy but I don't begrudge a fine actor who made a harmless joke. Typical whiny fandom getting upset and sounding like disgruntled One Direction fans when they don't get an autograph. Grow up.

from what i've heard he always seems nice to fans but just doesn't want to be in dr who again.

didn't he say moffat asked him to be in the 50th but he thought there wasn't much more he could do with the character ?

although i want him to come back just to do the regeneration from the 8th doctor to either john hurt of paul mcGann.

if somebody asked me to go back to a job that i was treated bad in i know what i'd tell them.

i have a sneaky feeling he'll show up in the 50th though, even if it's just a voice or a quick 1 minute appearence.

My guess is that Moffat always wrote the 50th as the 'Matt & David Show' and had a small part for Chris, maybe alongside Billie. I wouldn't blame him not wanting to return if it was just for, more or less, a cameo.

This thread may change the current advice that the quickest way to make yourself feel intelligent is to read the comments on stories covering Affleck as Batman.

I loved that message. Eccleston might not be a hardcore fan and maybe we'll never know for sure why he chose not to do the 50th but some of the criticisms of him here are ridiculous though.

I always say there's no such thing as a bad doctor. No disrespect to Chris, but I think he might be the least doctory, doctor....

I agree he wasn't the most Doctorish but neither was Davsion. Chris was a well known actor who helped relaunch the show. If he hadn't been the Doctor, then it may have bombed with another unknown actor.
