Most underrated band perhaps of all time?
In my opinion Smashing Pumpkins are perhaps the most underrated band of all time. No seriously. Or at least of the nineties. What I find hard to understand is why Nirvana get so much more credit. Corgan was a genius, and James Iha was a match made in heaven, along with chamberlains at times, phenomenal drumming. A mean what gives?

Smashing Pumkins were one of the most commercially successful rock bands of the Nineties. Not exactly what I'd call underrated.
'You know, Homer, I envy you. All we have are our legions of fans, our millions of dollars and our youth.......Woohoo!' I never saw New Fast Automatic Daffodils onThe Simpsons. |

I think they were. When ever a grunge band is mentioned its all 'Nirvana this..' and 'Nirvana that...'. Sure their last albums were poor compared to the first 3, especially Siamese dream.

I think that a band from the early nineties called 'Thousand Yard Stare' were excellent. Their debut album 'Hands on' was filled with great indie guitar tunes.
For me - Thousand Yard Stare - are the most underated band. I liked Smashing Pumpkins but I don't think they were underated. I think what happened with Nirvana had loads to do with 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' and K.Cobain's death. Cobain's death simply elevated Nirvana above the rest and as a result Nirvana became overated. I'm a fan of Nirvana's music and saw them live at 'The Mayfair' (a venue now demolished) in Newcastle upon Tyne in November 1991. That gig is still in my Top 10 gigs and will probably remain so too as I'm now in my 30's and don't get a chance to see too many bands these days! They made some amazing music (& noise!) but unfortunately became way too hyped after Cobain's death which had something to do with other bands not receiving the full recognition that was deserved. |

New FAD's .... definitely. Fantastic band, never got the recognition they deserved. I have all their albums, saw them live and still have t-shirt with a rubbery daffodil on it. I also kind of liked The Lemonheads, Buffalo Tom and Ozric Tentacles none of whom are totally obscure but none of them exactly became mega-stars either .... Oh and Terminal Cheesecake .... but they're just f***in' loopy. |

The Wild River Apples. I used to manage them in 1990. The very best band in Scotland at the time. Signed to Chrysalis. Cut a great album. Dropped from the roster with all other new bands when the company was taken over.
Oh, I had another band called the Electric Daisies. They were fantastic. Rudi ™

For me - Thousand Yard Stare - are the most underated band. For me, I'd say the most underrated band, certainly of the 90's, were the God Machine. |

The Chords
along time ago but were fantastic, and way above the mod revival tag they got stuck with in the early 80's |

Keane? Underrated? No disrespect to them at all, but one thing that they are most definitely NOT is under rated.

urgh Keane dreadful crap
my vote would be for Depeche Mode - electro pioneers, incredibly successful but virtually ignored airplay wise in recent years |

Bought an album by a band called Haven about 3 years ago called Between the Senses and managed to catch them live too. They released a couple of singles and dissapeared without trace sadly as it really is a fantastic album. Think Johnny Marr ( ex smiths) produced it or had some sort of connection with them??

MCarthy. The band that possibly 'outSmithed the Smiths' (quote from Andrew Collins on 6music). They made wonderful music in the 80's with smart lyrics, and produced one of my favorite albums 'I am a wallet'.
(Any Manics fans... you may be aware of the songs Charles Windsor and We are all Borgious now, which they did covers of). |

Yeah i agree with you there. People rate Nirvana too highly. Maybe they did pioneer Grunge, but why can't people just accept for once that Kurt Cobain is actually dead. |

QUOTE] Nirvana werent really that overrated, its just 12 year old teeny boppers ruined them by wearing all their hoodies. You go upto them and tell them that Kurt Cobain is dead, and theyre like "What?!! Nooo I just bought tickets to their next gig off ebay!" When peoples favourite bands don't get the success they think their band should, they look for another band to blame that managed to suddenly shoot to fame and their like "oh yeaha their manufactured and crap!" Happened to the Darkness, and happened to Nirvana, the reason these bands become huge is for one reason, theyre good!!! and appeal to a wide audience, the rock community arent gonna be tricked into buying bands albums and singles for their erotic dance routines and trashy videos, if big bands sell loads of CDs and do well its because theyre good! It now just has become fashionable to hate these big bands and like underground music, because that apparently makes you a more hardcore fan, but realistically for most bands theyre underground for one reason, they not good enough for the big stage! Nirvana were a great band just MTV and teeny boppers ruined them! |

For me it would be a one album rock group from the mid 80s.
They were black and brilliant, I have the album in a box upstairs, but I cant for the likes of me remember the name. Each track a winner. |

I'd also have to say Depeche Mode. One of the UK's most successful bands yet routinely ignored / ridiculed by mainstream music media. It astounds me how many people say Depeche Who? when they've consistently charted well for over 20 years!

I'll vote for Helen Love and Spray. Why should pop be the undisputed property of the humorless corporations and their bland, brainless pupets?

10,000 Maniacs for me. They got a decent amount of success in the US, where they come from, but hardly anyone here has heard of them.
