EastEnders under new management

New executive producer of EastEnders, Hawes, has tipped that there will be a blockbuster autumn coming up, as planned by previous executive producer Lorraine Newman.

“I’m ready to take the reins or so to speak. EastEnders has been going downhill recently and it’s up to me to bring it back. Get ready for plenty of drama – shocks, surprises, destruction – all of which can be used to make EastEnders a water-cooler topic.”

It is close to Carl’s deadline, and Max is nervous about what his enemy has in store for him. He is shaken when a brick is thrown through the window and then he enters the car lot to see a line of toy cars on his desk. Kirsty assures Max that Carl is just trying to get to him and that he should rise above it.

Carl continues to step up his campaign by talking to Lauren in Max’s view. Max storms out of the car lot and comes to blows with his enemy warning him to leave him alone or he will kill him. Max is visibly furious, but Carl is satisfied with the results of his manipulation.

Shirley continues to goad Phil out of his money, and when Denise quizzes Shirley on her actions, she tells her that she is getting even. Desperate to collect Shirley’s money, Phil discusses with Alfie about putting the Queen Vic up for sale, but Alfie begs him not to. When Carl witnesses Phil’s desperation, he offers him a lucrative deal. Reluctant to do a deal with Carl, Phil gives it some thought, but he soon returns and agrees to a deal with the devil.

At the Arches, Dexter overhears a conversation between Jay and Kitty on the phone suggesting that they haven’t ended their fling yet. Dexter warns Jay that he should tell Abi, but Jay refuses as it’s only a small thing and it could ruin everything. When Abi arrives at the Arches to give Jay lunch, Dexter is disappointed when Jay doesn’t confess.

Meanwhile, Lauren oversleeps and misses her counselling session, leaving Jake disappointed and alone at the counsellors’ office; and Cindy tries to bond with Denise.

Shirley demands her money or she’s off to the police. Phil tells her that she will have her money by the end of the day, and Shirley is satisfied. At the same time, Max is nervous and shaky about what Carl could do on the day that would be his and Kirsty’s wedding anniversary. Nervous, Max warns Kirsty not to leave the house.

As Max goes to work, he is curious to see Phil getting into a car with Carl. He decides to ignore it and go to work. Jack arrives at the car lot wanting to talk.

Jack reveals to his brother that he is nervous about a reconciliation with Ronnie, but Max agrees to be there for him every step of the way, while also watching over his shoulder for what Carl could be doing. Max then quizzes Jack about his rivalry with Phil, becoming paranoid that Phil and Carl could be teaming up to get at them both.

What Max doesn’t know is that Carl has his own plan and his reckless driving along a dual carriageway in Greenwich puts both him and Phil in danger as the brakes are faulty and the car flips over...

Meanwhile, Jake arrives on the Square looking for Lauren to ask her why she wasn’t at the counselling session yesterday. At first, Max is paranoid about seeing a man walking up to the door but when Lauren and Jake both explain their acquaintance, Max leaves them to it. After Jake leaves, Sadie sees him and as they lock eyes, Sadie storms away.

Elsewhere, it’s date night for Masood and Carol and as they go to Fargo’s together, AJ is off to the club. He is soon called over by a mysterious group of men who give him a package. Just what is AJ up to?

The car has flipped over in the middle of the road. Carl struggles out of the car, but Phil has been flung out of the car window. A nearby viewer calls an ambulance and it’s not long until an air ambulance arrives at the area. Lying unconscious on the floor, Phil is lifted into the helicopter as Carl is taken away by van. In the hospital, Carl tells the police that his brakes had been tampered with, but the police tell him that a witness has said that he was driving recklessly. Meanwhile, Phil is still unconscious and as Roxy, Billy and Sharon visit the hospital, they are nervous about his condition. As the police return to Carl, he suggests that someone back on the Square could be responsible for tampering with the brakes and gives one name – Max Branning.

Max returns home from the car lot and is ecstatic to see Kirsty still at home. Kirsty suggests that they call Carl to try and sort things out in a civilised manner, and Max reluctantly agrees. However, Carl’s phone does not answer as it was broken in the crash. Glad that Carl is not pursuing his threat, Max becomes confident and assembles Abi, Jay and Lauren to dinner. In the middle of dinner, they receive a knock at the door. It’s the police – they want to take Max down to the station.

Meanwhile, as Dexter continues to hear Jay on the phone to Kitty, he offers Jay an ultimatum that either he tells Abi or Dexter does. Jay tells Dexter that he will end things with Kitty if it means that he doesn’t tell Abi. Dexter tells Jay that he needs to witness the breakup, so Jay calls Kitty to end things. Afterwards, Dexter sees Jay on the way to Abi’s for a meal, and Jay confesses to Dexter that things have been difficult between him and Abi since she has such high expectations to be a vet and he is stuck being a mechanic.

Also tonight, Danny gets a good offer for business at the gym but Michael is keen to put a spanner in the works for him. However, with Janine anticipating his every move, Michael falls flat on his face, and Janine warns him that if he makes little money then he will never be able to build a stable home for Scarlett.

Max wakes up in a cell in the Walford police station. Kirsty is waiting in the foyer and tries to talk to someone about releasing Max. Lauren tells Kirsty that there’s every chance that Max could have tampered with the brakes. Max is called in for questioning, and he tells DCI Sharp that Carl framed him since he holds a grudge against him, although DCI Sharp twists Max’s words, so he refuses to speak until he gets a lawyer, so he returns to his cell.

Kirsty has gone to the hospital to visit Carl. Carl tells Kirsty that he’s being discharged, and when he is asked if this was all his plan, Carl states that he wouldn’t be in hospital that way. As Carl leaves, he visits Phil who is still in a coma. Kirsty and Carl arrive back on the Square together and Cora sees them. Cora warns Kirsty that she should choose who she’s with, but it’s clear that Carl has dripped poison into Kirsty’s head.

With Phil still incapacitated in hospital, his house is free, so Shirley decides to break in using a baseball bat. As she skulks around the house, she enters their old bedroom and sees a picture of Ben. In a fit of rage, Shirley destroys the picture and smashes everything with her baseball bat. Still releasing her anger in the Mitchell house, Shirley decides to grab some matches and set fire to Phil’s belongings, including that of a picture of Phil, Grant and Sharon together. Overhearing the commotion, Roxy runs into the house expecting to see trouble, and as a furious Shirley finally breaks, she collapses into Roxy’s arms.

Meanwhile, Roxy herself is placed into her own dramas when Kat sees her to ask if she knows any more about Ronnie’s release. Roxy reveals that she knows it is next Monday. Shocked about it being so sudden, Kat agrees to meet Ronnie at the prison gates to try and get her away from Walford, suggesting that Alfie goes too. Roxy then reveals to Kat that Alfie doesn’t know that Ronnie is being released so soon. Kat pleads with Roxy to discuss it with Alfie.

Also tonight, Jay continues to get harassed by Kitty so he is forced to dispose of his phone; and AJ is forced to hide things under the stairs in the Masood house when Carol comes over.

Roxy is hastily preparing for Ronnie’s homecoming, but Alfie confesses to Roxy that he’s uncomfortable with Ronnie returning. Despite this, Kat tells Alfie that they should move on for their own sakes and for Tommy’s sake. When Kat tells Roxy that she will allow Ronnie to come home, Roxy is thankful, but Michael is not so sure about the return of the woman who stole his biological son. This leads Alfie to call Kat about whether she is making the right decision.

However, Kat hangs up the phone. She’s already at the prison gates – just as Ronnie walks out to see who she is coming up against.

Cora tells Kirsty to visit Max so that they can keep the family unit strong. Carl agrees to give Kirsty a lift, but Lauren can tell that Carl is revelling in having the power. While Kirsty is in the police station, Lauren catches up with Carl and she begs him to tell the truth about the accident and that it was his reckless driving. Meanwhile, in the station, Max finds himself coming to blows with Kirsty, and when Kirsty continues to defend Carl’s actions, Max gets furious and flips over the table in fury – unaware that his actions are damaging his case.

Meanwhile, still infuriated by Ronnie’s resurfacing, Michael’s day is made worse when he sees Danny and Janine playing happy families with Scarlett, and desperate to find out about Danny’s past, Michael gets into contact with Syed. Unfortunately, he refuses to discuss his personal situation.

Ronnie agrees to go to a cafe with Kat. Kat tells Ronnie that Roxy and Alfie are engaged, which ruins Ronnie’s plans of an escape. Kat tells Ronnie that she should return to Albert Square to see Roxy and Billy, and then leave before Alfie sees that Ronnie’s back. Ronnie reluctantly returns to the Square in a cab, and Michael sees her. Michael sends this information to Jack, but he refuses to see his ex-wife and he hides in the gym. At the same time, Ronnie and Roxy are reunited in the Vic’s living room.

After a heart-to-heart between sisters, Ronnie agrees that it’s time that she left. As she turns her head, she sees a horrified Alfie staring furiously at her.

Michael becomes infuriated with Danny, and, speaking to himself in the mirror, decides that he should grab Scarlett and run. Alice overhears Michael talking to himself, and when she hears of Michael’s plan, she warns him not to.

Kirsty tries desperately to ignore Carl by staying strong on the home front by trying to unite Lauren and Abi who have just had an argument about their father and ways of helping him. When Carl persists to knock at the Brannings’ door, Cora warns Carl to leave the rest of the family alone since it’s Max that he has a problem with.

Liam is smitten with Cindy, but when Bianca figures it out, she hatches a plan to get on better terms with Ian. Reluctantly, Liam accepts a lower paid job at the chippy.

Ronnie wakes up on her own in the B&B, but when Sharon and Kim are hostile towards her, Ronnie decides to leave. Instead, she goes to see Phil at the hospital, who asks her to look after the businesses in his absence, unaware that Carl has taken it upon himself to cover things himself. When Carl hears of Ronnie’s past from Kim, Carl decides to use this knowledge to manipulate her when she tries to take charge at the Arches.

At the same time, Roxy rows with Alfie and runs away to cry while a panicking Alfie rushes into the bedroom and starts to pack his things. After Roxy turns to her sister in support, Ronnie tells her that Alfie is the best thing that’s ever happened to her, and she agrees to leave if it means that Roxy can keep on good terms with Alfie.

However, when Roxy sees Alfie departing Kat’s house, she decides to let Ronnie stick around.

Also tonight, Billy tries to console a paranoid Lola about Ronnie; AJ’s cannabis habit comes close to being revealed when Tamwar and Alice almost catch him; and Ollie arrives at the Vic with a message for Jean – he misses her and wants to try things again with her!

Finally, Sharon leaves a 'bedridden' Denny at Ian's while she visits Phil, but all is not what it seems as he makes a mess for attention.

Kat is relieved to see Ronnie moving on with things and looking after Phil’s businesses. Ronnie then comes face to face with Jack in the R&R and old tension is revisited. A depressed Jack gets back to work at the car lot, but the pressure gets to him when Kirsty is determined to give Max another visit at the prison. Kirsty reveals her idea to Jack that she should get someone to provide an alibi. Jack returns to the Square with this information and when he sees Kat, he decides to get her to provide an alibi.

Conversation soon turns to Ronnie, and Kat suggests that Jack make a go of things with her. However, Jack has too many things on his plate and dismisses Kat’s request, leading to her refusing to give Max an alibi. Later, Jack sees Ronnie and tells her that they can be civil now, but never in a relationship.

Meanwhile, Jean is excited to be getting back together with Ollie, but Kat interrupts her. However, Shirley and Denise give Jean some unlikely confidence. Confused about what to do next, Jean has another episode and starts acting strangely. When Roxy and Kirsty try to get her to stop acting so strangely, Jean pushes back and makes a public outcry that Alfie will never love Roxy the way that he loved, and still loves, Kat.

Elsewhere, an overbearing Sharon has a fight with Ian about Denny. But after some careful thought and catching Denny stealing from the Minute Mart, she is forced to discipline him, to which all Ian, Ava and Whitney are happy about. Then Sharon apologises to Ian and thanks him for being such a good friend through the years.

Also, Tiffany’s family tree project at school leads Bianca and Carol to remember their family.

It’s an unlucky day for the residents of Walford. Michael inspects his plane tickets – 1 adult, 1 baby. While at the gym, Danny taunts Michael about him moving in with Janine and being a bigger influence on Scarlett’s life. After an outburst against Danny, Michael furiously goes to the Vic to get drunk. It’s an ecstatic Jean who decides to help Michael out when he confesses that he plans to abduct Scarlett. Jean reminds him that it makes him no more better than Ronnie, telling him that an eye for an eye will make the whole world blind. Despite this, Michael’s mind is too warped to see her point.

At the same time, the awkward atmosphere between Roxy and Alfie above the Vic is becoming too much for them to handle, and Alfie suggests that they should spend some time apart and call off the engagement until they can be back to normal. As Roxy puts the puzzle pieces together, another row ensues, and Roxy asks Alfie whether it’s her or Kat that she loves. As Alfie tells Roxy that he will always have some feelings for Kat, Roxy gets the message and storms out of the Vic.

Meanwhile, Ronnie agrees to see baby Tommy for the first time, but when Kat introduces him to her, Ronnie is overcome with emotion and runs out of the room. It’s clear that the baby swap has had an adverse effect on her. Luckily, Jack agrees to support her, but their support soon turns into a passionate clinch...

Elsewhere, Jay’s guilt is clearly playing on his mind, so Dexter suggests that he tells Abi the truth in instalments to lessen the blow of the fact that he kissed another girl. Later on a date, Jay tells Abi in the middle of a joke that Kitty kissed HIM while drunk, and then lies that she kissed Dexter straight afterwards. Jay’s in hot water, but is he doing the smart thing?

Also, reminded about David, Carol tries to get back into contact with him but she is shocked when a woman picks up the phone; and Phil reveals to Billy that he’s considering ending his own life as he has been a failure and is hated by everyone.

I really can't stand the Sharon in the show now, so I thought 'Okay let's make her see how much of a c**t her son really is!' Throw in some classy scenes between the two veteran characters and you've got something better than the show.

I think Sharon's writing with denny is actually the build up to a long running story involving him, which would explain why she is defending him so much. I'd like to see Sharon have a slight crisis of conscience, considering that she thought her 'angelic' son has been anything but all along. Would make some good scenes.

As for Phil Mitchell considering ending his life, is that happening in the show? Phil must feel very low at the moment, very rarely does he accept defeat like that! Poor guy, always liked Phil and loved the Billy scene

Coming up in the next few weeks...

A familiar face is back on the Square, and he's back with a bang!

Max is out of prison thanks to an alibi. However, Carl's interference could get him back in prison as a relationship is torn in the process.

Lauren is introduced to Jake's wife - and she's closer than she thought!

AJ's drug habit is getting worse, and when he gets found out, it's not long until he is led astray.

Michael's problems are escalating, and Danny's mental manipulation pushes him to the limit.

Jack and Ronnie seem to be back together, but it gets to the point where Jack realises that it's time to step up.

Finally, there's a gun in the Square. Someone's gravestone is being produced at this very moment...

Kirsty rallies around Walford to find someone to give an alibi for Max, but when Ian, Lucy, Roxy and Alfie all refuse, she decides to turn to family. However, Dot suggests that they do not get involved and let a jury decide.

Kirsty continues to be stressed about the whole situation, and when she returns to her flat to see Carl waiting for her, a row breaks out. However, Carl, not giving up, goes to kiss Kirsty but she frantically pushes him away. Carl tells Kirsty that he’ll be back.

At the same time, Dot confesses to Poppy that she should have given Max an alibi. However, Poppy tells Dot that she doesn’t want her getting stressed. She will handle it.

Poppy goes to Kirsty’s flat with the door left open. She goes inside and sees Kirsty lying on her bed shivering. After Kirsty confides in her about Carl, Poppy tells her that she will give an alibi for Max.

At the same time, Jack is furious at himself after his night with Ronnie. They both decide that they are poison for each other and agree to never talk about it, and stop talking to each other. Later in the Vic, after talking to Jean, Jack agrees that he should just go for Ronnie, but she coldly rejects him, to which Jean tells him not to give up.

Jack and Kirsty arrive at Dot’s to give Poppy the information and help about an alibi, but they struggle to think of a possible time when Max and Poppy would be alone in a room together. Kirsty panics, believing that the alibi will no longer work, but Jack comes up with the idea that Max and Poppy were together in the car lot, which pushes Fatboy to storm out.
