They work on lower margins. As such it means surplus stock should never exist.
Contrast that to Tesco who supposedly throw away near 35% of salads. |

Whenever I go to either Aldi or Lidl during the morning or afternoon, they have tons of stuff all around the shop with 30%-off stickers, or sometimes even 50% (though you don't see them as often anymore). I save a fortune buying all this stuff.

I find both Aldi and Lidl run out of things over the weekend, especially on Sundays.
I remember going to Aldi on Christmas Eve in the last hour of it trading, and it looked like it had been looted! There was literally nothing at all in the meat section, a handful of packets of cheese scattered around otherwise empty shelves, most vegetables all gone and not much fruit either. Even tinned food and bottles of drink were extremely low. And still it was completely packed! I'm not sure if that was good for them because it meant they weren't left with any surplus stock, or bad because they lost out on selling more. When we went into Aldi on Christmas Eve near to closing time and it looked like they had just opened and all the fresh stuff was very very discounted. We bought bags and bags of spuds at about 10p and loads of veg - spent all Christmas Eve baking potatoes, blanching veg and making fruit salads for the freezer. Paid for our Christmas - brilliant as we are veggies. |

Excellent price and quality Chorizo in Aldi
Just discovered Aldi's Spanish Chorizo £1.49 for 170g [£8.76 / kilo] so much cheaper than Waitrose which is twice the price. The quality is also pretty good and much better than the Lidl "Spanish Style" made in Germany Chorizo which is more of a Salami which I used to buy. |

I've been an enthusiastic advocate of Aldi for some years, however in the last month I've had to throw out some packs of carrots and parsnips - clearly they were past their sell by date.
remember to open the plastic packets to let the veg breathe. |

That's the problem with aldi, I bet you only popped in for a carton of milk.
![]() But yes i have bought loads of gadgets from Aldi and just yesterday I found a £9.95 camera bag in my trolley and saw sense in returning it as I already have a perfectly good one. This 32" 1080HD TV sounds superb with a 3 year guarantee for £169.99 https://www.aldi.co.uk/en/specialbuy...ull-hd-led-tv/ |

There's doing 500ml bottles of 5% Bavaria lager for 89p a bottle.
It's quite a nice drink. |

Love Aldi. The only thing I've ever came across that I didn't like was their mushy peas.

I used to assume they both stocked the same stuff under different brand names, but most of what they stock is definitely different. These days I spend much more in Aldi than Lidl, and it's been months since I was in Asda. |

The Lidl here closed down ages ago. I've never used it as I lived with my parents while it was open. I've actually not been to Aldi for a while now I'll have to try and go next time I'm shopping.

Aldi are now stocking brioche burger buns, 4 for 99p. Will be trying them tonight, I've had the M&S ones before which are very nice I'll see how these compare.

Hazelnuts are back! I always buy my unsalted nuts and seeds from Aldi, and it's been many months since I've seen hazelnuts there. For some reason they don't stock them with the other nuts, instead they're in the baking section. I always checked there but they just weren't carrying them for some reason until this week. They're a little more expensive than the other nuts, but still good value for money.
Pistachios, cashews, walnuts, brazils, and almonds are all £1.29 a bag while hazelnuts are £1.49. Pumpkin and sunflower seeds are 99p per bag. I keep my eye out for macadamias and pine nuts but I rarely see them. I think ASDA sell them but they're a bit pricey. I believe Lidl has comparable prices for nuts but I don't go there much. |

I may pop into Aldis on the way home from work this afternoon and get some and some burgers. Only 6 hours today and then a whole week off. |

I shop at Iceland, Aldis for a few things, Sainsburys, Morrisons for a couple of things, I love their own baked sausage rolls. Iceland for a lot of my frozen stuff. I go to Tesco once in a blue moon, for some reason if I stay in their store for more than half a hour it makes me ill. Farmfoods is another one I use once in a blue moon, i normally get stuff from there if I am down that way as it is on the other side of the town, just below where Asda is. We got a home bargain now and that is cheap for some food. Because i don't drive and it is only a 10 min walk from my house, i got myself a shopping trolley and I am going to pop in there and get a a load of stuff. If it saves me money i do not care what people say about the trolley, but at least it is black. |

I posted in the Lidl thread that many of their own-brand products are disappearing in favour of the same big brand stuff you get in other supermarkets, presumably because those companies are offering Lidl incentives that make them more money than stocking their own. My Lidl have even stopped stocking their own shower gel and hair gel in favour of big brands at twice the price.
Sadly, the same thing is also happening in Aldi, though they're not as bad as Lidl - yet. The latest thing I noticed disappear from Aldi was their own brand yeast, a couple of weeks ago. Sure enough, today McDougalls yeast popped up in its place. It's currently the same price their own brand was (59p), but Ocado and Waitrose also stock the same box for 92p. I expect the Aldi price will creep up to something closer to Ocado over the coming months. There are also a lot of products Aldi used to stock all the time, but are now only offered every few months in a limited batch costing more. Make the most of Aldi and Lidl while they last. I'm suspicious they'll change a lot for the worse the further we move out of recession. |
