I like their Frikadellen meatballs, hate their whiskey.

I now shop at Aldi for my main shop but there are still things, usually cosmetics, toiletries etc., which I have to buy elsewhere.

We love the specially selected chunky maris piper chips and the fruit and veg is great value too.

They don't have the same range as other supermarkets but the savings are immense.

They do rush you at the checkouts but I don't really mind. Last week I had a big shop and was taking ages to put my shopping on the conveyor belt so the check out girl got out of her seat and helped to empty my trolly to keep everything moving. I also noticed they usually have only one checkout working when slow but as soon as this becomes busy another check out is opened very quickly.

My OH loves their white rum too!

GOOD
Corale baked beans - I prefer them to any other brand.

Extra mature cheddar - wonderfully sharp and strong; only £1.89 for the same sized block of so-called Seriously Strong (it isn't) that Morrisons offers discounted at £3.

Gold Label tea bags.

Choc-O-Toffees - WARNING - these are seriously addictive and ought to be available only on prescription.

Cucina tomato & garlic pasta sauce - wonderful stuff.

Both the red and green pesto sauce. I put the green pesto on salads and mix either into vegetable noodle dishes according to the mood I'm in.

Nearly all of the fresh vegetables.

I used to seriously love the vegetarian cannelloni from about five years ago, but then they substituted it with an inferior recipe and now they've stopped doing it altogether.

I know of women who think the that Aldi's various own-brand potions and lotions are the equal of many of the ludicrously expensive ones on the market.

BAD
As somebody mentioned, the checkouts are terribly designed, especially if you use a basket.

Lidl is bad, bad, bad (except for chocolate). They're now as expensive as Sainsburys and there's something very cheap and nasty about most of their own brands, Their ready meals look as if they are 90% additives and preservatives. Their wine selection is appalling (I dread to think how old it must be if they still sell bottles with those terrible plastic 'corks').

Doesnt everyone just put everything back in the trolley at the tills

.......then go over to the counter and pack everything there?
That is what I always do ^^^^

Most people do but you get numpties that insist on doing it there and then.

I usually use a basket and if it's quite full I have to bag up at the till uncomfortably quick because they don't allow you put everything back in your basket. They're terribly militant about not letting you take them a foot past the start of the conveyer belt.

I like their organic fairtrade bananas. About £1.29, just the right size for kids.

I tried the Highland Black whisky, and was a bit disappointed for the price. It still has that slightly harsh burnt oak taste that Bells has (though not as intense) and isn't as smooth as Famous Grouse. I don't think being aged for 8 years has done much for it!

I might try their Glen Orrin malt whisky, but it's also £13 and I wonder whether it tastes any different. As we head toward Christmas, I'm sure Asda and Morrisons will be doing 1L bottles of Famous Grouse for £14/£15 again.

Does anyone know how often Aldi sell advocaat? During the summer they were stocking it all the time but now it's disappeared, so is it something they only do occasionally?

I also tried their "totally topped" frozen pizza, £1.49 compared to 99p for the normal pizzas. I wasn't impressed, as the dough didn't seem as nice and it was just too spicy. All I could taste was chili. The 99p four cheese pizza is an absolute bargain, easily better than the equivalents from Asda or Lidl.

The southern fried chicken wraps are nice. The wrap might be marginally thinner than Asda, but they taste as nice and are cheaper, and there's still plenty of taste of the wrap.

I tried their gnocci for 65p and it was better than Morrisons or Asda.

Tins of peas are very good for 17p, if you don't have time to soak your own.

I tried the plain chocolate and the milk chocolate digestives and they're perfectly nice, and cheaper than McVites with or without their special offer prices. The plain digestives are only 30p but without the chocolate you notice they're not as good as big brands.

Garlic baguettes are just as good as anywhere else, and are only 34p (recently went up from 29p).

I tried their double cream for a soup recipe and it seems great but cheaper.

This week they've had onions and carrots on special offer. I only bought the onions because I didn't have time to go elsewhere (whenever I've tried them in the past, they seem stringy, especially the red onions), and they seemed to be better this time, though still not as good as Asda or Morrisons. Some of them have lots of dark green in the outer layers. Perhaps they're picked too soon, which is why they're relatively green and stringy.

I tried the Irish Cream faux-Baileys, it's OK but I think I prefer Lidl's. Not much in it though.

Just tried their part baked caibatta. It tastes lovely but... this simply is not ciabatta. It's just plain white bread dough in the shape of a ciabatta. Apart from a hint of olive oil in the after taste, it tastes nothing at all like ciabatta.

I will be buying it again as it tastes very nice, better than their 'real' white bread, but not when I actually want ciabatta. M&S are still the only high street store who do good ciabatta in my opinion.

On the other hand, since Sainsbury's stopped doing their all butter muffins, Aldi do the only ones I remotely like. Lidl's used to be very good, but one day the dreaded "new improved recipe" label appeared and they tasted bland ever since.

These are good to have in as an emergency.

What are their Snicker-esque chocolate bars called? They're really nice and just the right size to go with a cup of coffee.

Their chorizo is pretty rubbish. Too soft and quite bland.

Rocky ? I've got some in the cupboard but can't be arsed to go downstairs to check

I do think they have a slight coffee taste - It may just be the cheapo chololate though - They're not as good as Snickers but not far off.

We tried their red label tea bags last week. They were horrible. Still an Aldi fan though.

Sainsburys and Tesco both do Snickers-a-like as well as Mars Bar-a-like and others. Very cheap too - eight bars for just over £1. Hidden away on the bottom shelf. A discovery that has done my figure no good at all

Tesco do another range of Twix (5x2), Mars (6x45g), Marathon (not sure) alternatives and they are larger than the Aldi range and only a penny more (70p). The Twix-a-like sells out very quickly, so I normally snag 4 packs when they have them in

I tried the 'Specially Selected' pork sausages (6 in a flat plastic tray rather than 8 in a foil wrapper) and unsmoked bacon, both of which were £2 and lovely. Far nicer and cheaper than the Asda and Morrisons equivalents.

Moser Roth 85% cocoa finest dark chocolate.

It's as good as, or even better than Lindt.

Looks like a big 125g bar, but it's actually 5 individually wrapped 25g bars.

I tried their barbecue ribs tonight. A little bit sweet but a nice , slightly hot after taste. Nine ribs with loads of meat on all of them, more than I've ever had on M&S or Tesco ribs for £2.99. Will definitely buy again.
