Their Châteauneuf-du-Pape is pap.

It was the 2012 Vieux Remparts label on special offer for £9 and tasted disappointingly vinegary. I bought a 2012 bottle from Lidl the week before on special offer for £10.49 and it was much smoother.

There was a fabulous spread of poultry in Aldi this year. The only thing I didn't see was duck. I was in on Christmas Eve a couple of hours from closing time and already they were out of most vegetables (though had lots of fruit), cream, a lot of bread products and more. Queues weren't too bad and moved quickly, unlike Morrisons (which was a nightmare, as usual) and Asda, which was sluggish.

We excitedly wanted to try the wines they got in specially for Christmas in particular the Barolo and Amarone which are our luxury favourites.
Both were a let down and at £9 and £15 respectvely not cheap. We would have been better sticking to our regular cheaper red wines

Their fruit and veg is usually very good as is their meat. Their free range fresh chickens are excellent as are their yoghurts and all dairy foods. The frozen venison is great too and the pork and apple sausages (when they're stocking them) are the best sausages I've ever had.
Porridge is good and cheap but don't like their rice crispies.

I think they're better than most supemarkets.

I wholeheartedly agree. Today I bought a 1.3kg gammon joint for £4.99 there. Actually I bought a couple as I've tried them before and they're excellent and such good value

I bought some of these earlier and plan to have them tonight.

10 pack of Brioche rolls for 99p, ideal, warmed, on their own with a coffee, a small sandwich, or for making bread n butter pudding.
Tomato and Chilli chutney 99p, lovely, nice kick to it.
Smoked Cheese slices with Chilli & Peppers (10 in a pack) £1.19, great. Need to try these on a burger some time.
Also now a lot of Xmas stock is greatly reduced, e.g bacon covered whole Stuffed pheasant (frozen) is now £4.99.
Large pack of their Moser Roth chocolate bars, £1.99 for 10 small bars, 5 diff flavours. 250g in total. Nice

I don't think you can blame Aldi for that, it's more to do with the French insistence on using old-fashioned corks. Vinegary wines were commonplace before the majority switched to the far superior screw caps and buying any bottle sealed with a cork is a bit of a lottery. I'm sure Aldi would have changed it for you, but the same thing could just as easily have happened at Lidl - or with any other French wine.

The bottle wasn't corked, it just wasn't very good wine for the price. It didn't taste as good as Aldi's £4 Kooliburra Shiraz. Two bottles of C-d-P were bought from Aldi in the end, and it was rather telling that so much else had disappeared from the shelves whilst there were loads of this stuff left.

Lidl's was a smoother tasting, superior Châteauneuf du Pape, worth £10.49 and probably tempting at the usual £12.49.

I've never had or seen a problem with a bottle of wine sealed with a cork, by the way. So hardly a lottery. Most rotten bottles of wine get contaminated before the cork goes in. And most supermarket wine gets opened long before the cork has a chance to dry out after being stored upright for years.

You don't often see the problem, the wine just don't taste great.


Your crap wine really might have been good when it was bottled.

I went into Aldi in St Helen's last week and it seemed alright. I mean its a brand new store and looks impressive but much of the food is, questionable lets say. The crisps are the biggest con. The mini cheddar's and hula hoops for instance have the same coloured packaging as their English counterparts and so many people would buy them thinking their getting a barging but really they are throwing good money down the drain. Your better off buying crisps in the Pound Shop.

Whilst I steered away from buying any of the above two of the three items that I purchased were vile. The first being a vegan flapjack. And the second being a pot of tomato and basil pasta. The pasta looked alright but as I started to eat it I found a hair! . So damned disgusting, I won't be going to Aldi again any time soon.

The Aldi £5.49 Minarete Ribera del Duero is the best sub £10 (after fake BOGOF in Tesco etc) wine I have tasted. It has become my house standard.

The Aldi Sauvignon Blanc is appalling. Flat and bitter.

The Aldi Australian Chardonnay tastes like a NZ Sauvignon Blanc - not too bad if a bit acidic if you don't think of what it is supposed to be.

The Monsigny Champagne at £9.99 is far better that all the other supermarket £10 to £15 (after fake BOGOF) Champagnes.

The Amaretto is superb.

The Cream Sherry is a great base for a Orange juice and Cava cocktail (one third each).

2 Litre sparkling water and 2 Litre diet lemonade are great at 17p.

Aldi Ginger Wine is great for winter chesty coughs - cheaper than cough mixture.

Just had my regular Jive Bar with first work coffee break of the year (Twix lookalikey and better than the original!)

I have to disagree, I've not tried their brand of hula hoops yet but the 'mini cheddars' are lovely. Their version of quavers are lovely as well.

So far the only thing I've tried so far that I won't have again are the big share bag of 'wotsits' I prefer the tesco own version if I'm not going to buy the actual brand.

Their frozen turkey was really nice. It's wasn't dry and was a hit with my family. I'll be buying mine from there next year as well I think.

I love their version of matchmakers as well. I ate two whole packs myself over the Christmas break

Aldi vegetarian food is so full salt. Wouldn't touch it again having said that quourn mince and chicken style pieces are a lot cheaper than other supermarkets.

We got the 6kg frozen turkey from Aldi this time for Christmas dinner, it was probably the best turkey we have ever had. Beautiful and moist, a big hit with our family too. I also got their matchmakers and I preferred them to the real Matchmakers.

After tonight's dinner I can report back that the frozen Specially Selected Angus beef burgers are delicious, especially in Aldi's cheese topped baps

It's nearly one year old and its the same that applied to the other supermarkets concerned.

Then don't eat processed food from anywhere. Aldi's vegetables (salt free of course) are much cheaper than the same in other supermarkets - except perhaps for Lidl.

Lettuce is 49p in Aldi and £1 in Tesco for example.

I bought a Morphy Richards Soup Maker from Lidl last week for £29.99 (some still around and £10 cheaper than Argos etc.) so I am having fresh vegetable soup everyday - no salt or other preservatives. Done in 20 minutes plus 10 minutes for chopping.

And the lesson is avoid processed ready meals from all supermarkets.

Can you tell me what a soup maker consists of? I make a lot of soup, but I just use a hand held blender or a mechanical blender when I want a smoother soup.

i hear good things about aldi poultry, i've used their fresh chicken fillets before and they were every bit as good as morrisons..
i'm not a fan of frozen turkey, i prefer it fresh but glad you enjoyed it!!

You mean they actually had them in stock? I went to every Aldi within a twenty mile radius and none of the staff had ever seen them.

I was told that sometimes the advertised products don't appear because of a safety recall, so I assumed that's what must have happened. I never even found a shelf label to show that they were ever there.
