Cat Flu
Andy2
28-08-2013
24 hours after picking up our Charlie from the cattery (we'd been on a week's hols) he started sneezing and snorting, shaking his head and being generally miserable.
We took him to the vet yesterday and she confirmed cat flu. A course of antibiotic tablets (great fun!) and advice to make sure he is eating plenty of wet food. That seems to be it.
Looking at the symptoms online, it sounds like there may be worse to come. Poor fella is already suffering long bouts of sneezing and coughing.
I've informed the cattery and they told me they've just seen two cats come down with it.

Many years ago two of ours had cat flu, treatments are better these days I think, but our cats were very bad with it. Eating was the last thing on their minds for nearly a week. Sick and diarrhoea, runny nose, breathing problems. All we could do was cradle them in our arms and wait. The both survived and went on to live long happy lives but not something I want to ever go through again. Luckily drugs are better now so hopefully won't be as bad for yours.

Poor thing. Do the cattery not insist on vaccinations? I know they don't prevent all strains but generally they are effective at preventing the spread.

I'd recommend you keep her in whilst she's ill, preventing the spread of it further.

I always isolate any new comers in the house due too cat flu. Once they have had cat flu they can become carriers too I had tell you that sorry. I have two oaps that have had it. Because of there age they did suffer terribly with snotty noses sticky eyes too. They had the worst strain ever, the girl called baby started limping so we took her straight too the vets. That was the start off it. I've had 17 day old kittens down with it too. You can't treat the flu but the symptoms . The incubation period for it is any where from 1 day too 21 days too. Any signs or you think Charlie is not right just take him too the vet.

Thanks all. He is fully up to date with his jabs but as the vet said, you can't cover everything. He's a house-cat so he won't be passing it on.
His eyes and nose are very runny with clear mucus and we bathe this away with warm salt water every few hours. I hate seeing him like this.
He's a big, healthy cat, so hopefully he will get through it OK.

Has he been given any eye drops or cream for his eyes. With baby she can't tolerate heat at all. I it's too hot her nose gets blocked up and starts too run afterwards. So we have in winter too keep it as cool as possible, also a Idea for blocked noses is run the shower or steamy bath and stay in the room with Charlie if couse it can clear the airway and noses too.

Aww poor lil thing.
Our one had this after his first vaccs, still dont understand why he got it when he was meant to have just been vacc against it.
Dose of anti biotics and he was ok.
Wishing you the best

Vaccines do prevent it but if they get it lesson the symptoms of cat flu.

So many strains of flu, it's like human flu jabs it protects against one but you can catch another but it also protects your airways so the disease will be less serious.

A tip our vet gave us when our cat had a bad case of flu, olbas oil on a tissue, so it clears their airways, and we used small syringe to get water into her, and give them really smelly food to eat, like sardines or mackerel, hope he'll be ok.

Just a quick update. Yesterday morning he came to wake us up at 6 AM, the first time he's done this for several days. He seemed much brighter and his tail was back up. Today he's better still and is eating and drinking almost as normal. His airways still sound noisy and he still has the odd coughing bout, but things are getting better for our boy Charlie.
Many thanks for all the advice and kind wishes.
