Poorly cat - Vet trying hard sell.
simon40
28-08-2013
My 10 year old cat has been sick today and not her normal self.
Took her to the vet as she was not eating or drinking - vet checked temperature, which was high and gave her 2 injections antibiotic and something to bring temperature down - £53.

Now after injections she was trying to sell some plug in thingy to calm cat and some powder to sprinkle on food as 4 months ago she had Cystitis.

Really annoyed at the hard sell, Owner and head vet never does this so why the junior vet, do you think they are commission?

I'd rather they mend my cat than try to sell me things when is isn't improved yet.

Said i need to visit again tomorrow to check her but all other times they said if she wasn't better to bring her back but i think we are going to get hard sell again!

Think i will be changing vets soon.

Was it feliway. Some cats my Guinness gets it too it helps some it doesn't. It's all down to the ph levels in food too. They can be expensive but some times cheaper on line. The powder ven though I never used it does work.

I think this is some vets way, our cat had cat flu, antibiotic injections etc, £40, then wanted to do an aids test on her, £50, it was a junior vet too, you have to make a stand, now if I have to take any of mine to vets, I ask for a particular vet who I have dealt with for years, am also fed up with the hard sell, their charges are high enough.

Hope your cat gets better soon

Thanks Rocket Queen - she's a bit better, been to the loo for a Wee no problems with that

Sniffed at her food, tried a small biscuit and licked a few drops of water off my finger.
Probably doped up with the 2 injection she had 6 hours ago. Hopefully more herself in the morning.
Sleep on her favorite chair in my Bedroom and i heard her purrr.

I have a little dish with a teaspoon of her favorite cat food and a few flakes of Cod.

Maisey Moo it was Fellway.

If she is on wet food. You can warm it up for a few seconds. Do you know what injection she had,

I doubt changing vets will help IMO. They all do it I think, they are a business at the end of the day. I know meds and treatment are expensive, but much of he real moneymaking is probably in the other stuff. So long as they ask politely you can refuse politely back.

Doesn't seem like a hard sell to me, cystitis in cats can be fatal, and quick, it often occurs when they have other things going on, so a good vet should IMO preempt it. I'm sure you'd be shouting the roof off if your cat died from a uti that could of been prevented, because the vet didn't offer you additional Meds.

Any pet owner that put finances over their animals well being isn't a good owner in my eyes.
Absolutely

The Vet could also have just said to change the diet of the cat .

.Diet: Moisten dry food or change to canned/raw food. Dry food contains approximately 10% water, whereas canned or raw food contains approximately 70% water. Cystitis has been shown to recur less often in cats fed a canned diet.

Really? so how about a pet owner who chooses to feed their pet rather than them selves? cos their vet has charged them loads on stuff their pet didn't need?
I must be a very bad owner in your eyes than

No that's the exact opposite of my version of a bad pet owner a did you not read my post? If you are feeding your per over you then I lift my hat to you - it's sad that its come to that (why no insurance?) but I admire your morals on the matter, I would do the same.

A bad pet owner (or at least someone I think shouldn't be having a pet) is one that puts money before thier pets welfare, so many times you see on these boards 'oh vet said she needed xyz but ip the cost £££ so I'm not doing it' - or even just someone like the op who is moaning/questioning costs because they are too high. Vet treatment is not cheap, he's they try to push additional treatments but IMO it is better to treat your animals than think about the financial side - I'm not well off but make sure I have insurance in case anything like this comes up.

vets tend to inflate prices. recently we spent just under 40 on flea tablets and flea spray. we researched them when we got home and online from the actual companies themselves it came to about 20. 40 was a lot of money for us and we nearly ended up in trouble at the time over it. we were happy to get flea stuff because our cats had quite a problem and they did work thank god but we felt ripped off. how can they charge double what the people who make them do. i wish we had got a refund.
my advice is to look online and buy the items needed at half the price , paying double for the same thing is ridiculous.

I agree when it comes to wormers and flea treatments, zoo plus, petmeds etc all do good deals on them.

I disagree with this. I have found a wide variation in the attitude of vets. We changed vets, because we were unhappy with the previous one, and have found our new vets to be far more helpful.

I don't think it was about putting money before their pets, its just that some vets do over charge for stuff you don't need or want, I know from experience, I have a vet only 2 miles away from me, but its cheaper and the treatment is so much better 7 miles away. Oh and I haven't got insurance ,but I'll find the money if I have too.
