Overplay and netflix issues?
Anyone having issues with overplay and netflix this morning - was working fine earlier, but now cannot access netflix with overplay enabled (I can access things like hulu and pandora, so I know it's working correctly).
Signed up for a trial unotelly account and that seems to work, so that suggests the problem is at overplays end? |

I was on Netflix earlier today, and currently streaming from both PBS & Netflix at the same time. (PBS on Roku, Netflix on iPad)
In fact, I've been streaming from various sites via Overplay all morning as I'm doing some bandwidth tests and everything has been going fine. Have you been to the SmartDNS page on Overplay and made sure everything is set for your IP address? |

Just returned my DNS to the overplay ones, and it's working again, so not sure what the issue was.
Quite impressed with unotelly, may consider moving to them when my sub to overplay runs out in a fortnight. Seems to be a little quicker than overplay, perhaps because I'm using a server in Dublin. |

I don't think that the speed is likely to be better using a Dublin server from Morecambe, despite the geographic proximity. What would be interesting would be to find which Akamai content server you are provided by Overplay vs Unotelly...
At a command prompt try typing... (overplay) nslookup 110751-f.akamaihd.net 176.67.84.19 and (unotelly) nslookup 110751-f.akamaihd.net 54.247.108.9 and then ping the ip addresses each provide you with... for example - nslookup 110751-f.akamaihd.net 176.67.84.19 Server: 176.67.84.19 Address: 176.67.84.19#53 Non-authoritative answer: 110751-f.akamaihd.net canonical name = a747.w23.akamai.net. Name: a747.w23.akamai.net Address: 92.122.49.8 Name: a747.w23.akamai.net Address: 92.122.49.42 ping 92.122.49.8 PING 92.122.49.8 (92.122.49.8): 56 data bytes 64 bytes from 92.122.49.8: icmp_seq=0 ttl=59 time=14.964 ms nslookup 110751-f.akamaihd.net 54.247.108.9 Server: 54.247.108.9 Address: 54.247.108.9#53 Non-authoritative answer: 110751-f.akamaihd.net canonical name = a747.w23.akamai.net. Name: a747.w23.akamai.net Address: 23.62.98.136 Name: a747.w23.akamai.net Address: 23.62.98.168 ping 23.62.98.136 PING 23.62.98.136 (23.62.98.136): 56 data bytes 64 bytes from 23.62.98.136: icmp_seq=0 ttl=48 time=24.271 ms So in my case, from Lancashire, you'll see that the Overplay provided server is giving me a lower latency. It'll not be enough to make even a tiny difference in quality for a 2.4Mbit stream though - i think quality differences are mostly going to be placebo. |
