I really can't believe why there is all this discussion of cock ups etc. on what is an obscure bug that causes a browser (not the OS) to crash. What an amazing revelation - sometimes programmers write buggy software !!!
The only conclusion I can come to is because this is Apple, and the gloaters are surfacing.

or it might be something to do with the fact that apple and their iDevotees and the press have sent years telling us that MS, Android, etc are buggy and virus ridden whilst apples "just work".

untill the public see their iWhatevers fall over they will refuse to take responsibility for their own security and continue to fall for Apple's mismarketing.

How many iphone users for example are aware that malware has made its way into the app store? I guess less than 1%.

apropos the Unicode of Death, recursively crashing sms is a tad more serious than a crashing browser, especially in light of the lack of press coverage/advice from apple

All software has bugs, no-one on here would dispute that. The difference is that the walled garden approach has certain security benefits - and I completely agree it also has certain downsides, of which I am the first to be frustrated by.

Let's not forget that you're not going to type this string accidentally - do you ever leave your house, or are you afraid you will be run over by a bus ?

Oh christ, not this nonsense again.

You lot come out the woodwork when there is a bug in Android as well. Stop this whole 'because its apple' rubbish. It's really like the apple users defence when something is said about their precious idevices when something wrong is discovered.

It's not an obscure bug! It can also loop crash the SMS app.

I think what people are surprised at, is apple have known about this for a long time and done nothing about it. Have they even publicly acknowledged it yet? Or have they done their usual and kept stoom about the whole thing?

Of course it is. You are not going to type it accidentally, so I suggest you stop swearing at me.

Swearing? I would love for you to show me where i did that please.....

Anyway, its not obscure at all. Look at any page and it will crash safari. Someone sends you a text with it, will lop crash the SMS app.

The point is, apple have known about this for some time and done nothing about it.

I agree, all OSes have bugs/vulnerabilities. I know that, you know that but the average punter doesn't. When talking to people about their iphone purchases they often say things like "well apple invented the smartphone so it must be the best", "app store apps are checked so they can't have viruses", "macs don't get viruses so iPhones can't either". They see the press and apple bang on about android viruses, unaware that Google curate their store and obtain a false sense of security.

granted it is very unlikely that an one would accidentally type the code but it is increasing probable that someone will sms or email it to an iphone owner. Until the press highlights it, the owner won't have the foggiest what to do.

i know or rather knew people knocked dead by buses, fortunately they are out numbered by those that i know that have received the code as sms.

it is time that we had a level playing field with regard to the way that the press treat technology firms. Any other story affecting hundreds of millions of potential owners would be front page news.

It is not a small bug.

You can remotely shut down someone's phone denying them access to emergency services for example.

It's only a matter of time before there are further exploits. And apple are doing nothing.

That hasn't even been released by Apple yet, it's still in Beta.

Generally most apps will crash out and restart where they left off. This is what they are meant to do, so like your browser crashes you restart and it goes back to where it crashed.

But this allows you to create a loop. That is unrecoverable. Say sending a push message with the sender as one of these sequences. So every time it crashed it restarts but still has a new push message to display.

That's what the security guy linked up the page was suggesting anyway. I don't know enough about the iPhone to verify it.

just like siri then. Kept in beta longer than any other program i can think of, just to stave off class action cases of people complaining about it. Sorry, a tad off topic..

i guess the answer is that Mavericks will cover that BUT todate we don't know if it or ios7 can handle the new strings being found.

FWIW all the publicised strings i've tried so far have had no noticeable effect on iOS 7 or Mavericks.

It does seem as though this sort of thing is more newsworthy if its OSX, when it wouldn't be newsworthy if it was anything else.

It has been fixed in IOS 7, but it's an issue for anyone who opens that text on any other IOS device using anything that renders using webkit, such as a Twitter app, browser, email client.

Don't talk nonsense.

It was newsworthy when Android bugs have been picked out as well. In fact, ive not seen this yet on the BBC news or anything whereas the Android bugs have been.

I do wish you lot would stop this same sentence over and over....

How about Gmail then. I believe that was in beta for at least 5 years.

You think it's more news worthy on osx than on windows? The operating system that 90% of people use.

dictionary.com definition of swear - "to use profane oaths or language".
Now look back at your post, I don't want to repeat the word in the context in which you used it.
