Was talking today with my mum about telly in general and Corrie. She says she can remember when you would just put the telly on and you didn't know things like Hayley getting a life threatening illness, the pub burning down and David and Nick and the crash malarkey were going to happen, and what did happen would be a surprise.

Also no "coming up" pages in TV Times about soaps.

Wonder what would happen to viewing figures if nothing whatsoever was spilled?

I also remember those times and viewing figures were high. Mind you, there were only terrestrial TV channels then - nothing like the number of channels that there are now.

I think those of us who are old enough to have lived through those times would still carry on watching as usual but the younger ones may not simply because having spoilers etc is what they're used to and they may not be interested in watching if they don't know what storylines are coming up.

In all honesty, I think not a lot would change. Apart from BIG publicized episodes (which don't necessarily contain spoilers, like the live episodes) you often find that during climaxes of massive storylines, the ratings are increased in the episodes following, or if there is a strong build up/cliffhanger leading to the "big" episode then that will hook people in and keep them watching the "climax" episode. Depends what the storyline is. But I think things would be almost no different...

I find that extremely unlikely...kind of makes out young people aren't interested unless they know what's coming which I don't believe in at all. I'm sure when I joined DS over 10 years ago I had the same debates on here (when I was in the war etc ) and I was young then (as in teenager!) and felt the same, I'd still watch a soap regardless (as I did in the 90s and had little access to spoilers), nothing's changed and I'm sure most young people would still watch...

I don't remember a time when I didn't know what was going on in soaps before they were aired. I was a student in the 90s and used to watch Emmerdale then as well as Corrie and Brookie. I remember knowing about a fire in Emmerdale and Kim Tate and that Glover character (who tried to rescue a baby and died) and what was going on in Brookside as well. And all that stuff with Deirdre and the fake pilot who worked at Tie Rack

But would you have stopped watching if you didn't know what was happening?

The most excited (or "happy") I've seen this forum is when something totally unexpected happens, and that's how I've felt as a viewer - e.g Zoe blowing up Home Farm which was unfortunately leaked on D.S on the day but it was so last minute and no one knew it was coming otherwise.

Soap ratings would definitely be pretty much as they are now without spoilers.

Even when I was younger, like 6 or 7 years ago when I only used the computer for homework or coursework the soaps would be shocking. I remember Kat revealing Zoe was her daughter was absolutely shocking in our household.

What I find irritating is that everybody reads the spoilers so knows what's coming up and by the time the sl appears on screen, we get loads of people moaning either that it was 'predictable' or it's 'dragging on too long'.

For some people, it's like once they've read the spoiler, it's pretty much all over and they're clamouring for the next big thing.

I felt this. When it was announced Cindy Jr was brought in, people were already saying in the 'get rid of deadwood' threads that she needed to go. She hadn't even appeared on screen at that time?

LOL! That's exactly the sort of thing I mean, (albeit a very extreme example).

I try and avoid spoilers as much as I can now. I don't look on the soaps page on this website for example and I actually don't read any newspapers or magazines, so I think I've been doing quite well... it really does increase my enjoyment of Coronation Street and Emmerdale loads when I don't know what's going to happen!

Some people just seem to enjoy being unhappy and moaning. I read the soap spoilers in the same way I would a synopsis of a book I might consider reading, or a description of a film I may wish to watch. They outline what is 'coming up' but don't give away crucial details (although this is not always the case). I read the spoilers knowing that I am, spoiling the shock factor for myself... Kind of self explanatory isn't it?

Although, I do love a surprise! Lyndsey Nolan's murder in HO was one of them OMG moments!

When I was younger in the mid-90s, I never had any interest in TV magazines, had no access to the Internet which would probably have had little information anyway in those early days, and therefore usually watched without major spoilers. I knew vague outlines because my older sister read magazines, such as what type of storyline was coming up etc, but I very rarely knew details of storylines and usually was unaware of upcoming exits. I clearly remember when Kevin's wife Alison died and that was completely out of the blue for me. I also had no idea at all about Richard murdering Maxine as recently as 2003, which made the episode even more iconic and terrifying. I do wish things could be kept secret again. Imagine the impact of something like the tram crash or Frank raping Carla if it happened without warning.

But I have to say with regards to the Hayley storyline, I'm glad we know all about how this is going to unfold. I'm finding it hard enough to watch even having come to terms with such a sad ending for Hayley that is so close to home for me - if tomorrow's episode (where the ultimate outcome of this storyline will be revealed on screen) had appeared without warning I probably would have abandoned the show in shock.

Shows are sooo much more exciting when A) they have GOOD twists and B) they're not leaked/spoiled before hand.

I can't say any of our UK soaps ever have both of those unfortunately.

I hate spoilers, and avoid them like the plague. But it's so difficult, thoughtless people post them on here, the Radio Times sometimes gives stuff away and even the stupid announcers will tell us what's going to happen next.

It baffles me why anyone would want to know what's going to happen in the next episode, surely the whole point of watching soaps is to be surprised at twists in the storylines. Maybe it's just me.

I remember getting the TV times and going straight to Monday and Wednesday to read the short preview. The biggest giveaway was always the cast list for each episode. I do think I enjoyed it more back then (70's/80's)

I certainly did. It just seems that some people don't like to be surprised!

I agree entirely. My hubby actually prints tv mags and women's mags. He comes home and says 'do you wanna know what happens in Corrie?' I ALWAYS say no. I don't like knowing what's in store.

I think the first 'spoiler' I remember was when The Rovers burned down in '86 when that was in the newspapers before it happened.

These days it's all about the ratings so to get more people watching they leek storylines to newspapers and magazines and then do official press releases the week or so before hand which I suppose gets more viewers.

No surprises any more in TV land.
