You are just proving my point I made to myself about him

I was hooked on that very same episode and I believed in him then. He and Leanne appeared to have a true love story and he was very convincing. I did cry

But I would argue that that was really his finest hour.
It seemed to me that the writers, plus the actress who plays Carla who I believe wanted to become part of a more central family, thought they could simply remove Leanne from the equation and have him be that same character with Carla, who they wanted to promote.
Well you know what, they failed.
He might have been smitten with Carla, as they story went but he has never been the same way with her, in other words, he's never really been himself again.
He's been more uptight, more uncomfortable at some times and smarmy and phoney at others.He hasn't been the same Peter Barlow.
He doesn't respond well to Carla and is rarely demonstrably affectionate and he is so kowtowed he never answers her back nevermind dare to raise his voice. It's not a relationship of equals and it shows. He is out of his depth and not emotionally engaged and I'm so glad to see the farce finally coming to a conclusion.
