While I don't deny that the music industry uses sex to sell records...I find it incredibly hypocritical of Ms Church to blame her imagine on the music industry and her former management. She was falling out of nightclubs wearing next to nothing left, right & centre in her 'heyday'

Sexism seems to be the vogue thing to talk about these days from singers and actors who aren't as prominent as they once were.

Then she grew up and had children, while staying out of the spotlight. She has a very good point because she has learnt what is expected of her.

I'm going to play devil's advocate here:

Are Justin Bieber and One Direction not being "sexualised" and marketed on how attractive they are?

Why are shirtless pictures of Bieber any different to Miley wearing next to nothing?

To be fair, she does accept some of the blame herself. But I don't doubt she was encouraged to wear revealing outfits.

That's a fair point, actually. It's true that sex sells, whether the star involved is male or female, and the talk of sexism is a little exaggerated in some cases. However, away from the boy bands, there are plenty of male stars who don't market themselves in this way. Virtually all female performers are sold on looks and, apart from the odd exceptions like Susan Boyle, I don't think there are many female artists in any genre of popular music who aren't sexually attractive.

Charlotte was constantly jiggling her "spilling out of a corset" baps in her Call My Name video. You could tell she didn't look comfortable with the whole thing.

Although she is right in a lot of what she says, the fact is, 'Sex sells' always has done, always will do.

If you have music execs etc throwing money at you to make music, then you have to have a bit of give and take. It is a business as well as art after all.

Image and style has always been tied up with music, so unless you want to be totally in control of that, and use your own resources and money to make the music the way you want to, then you have to be a little flexible.

She wasn't sexy enough to sell many records, even despite running around in her nickers.

Not really, because in the audio link she claims that she was 'forced' by her label to wear revealing clothes when performing. She could feel the time is right to take a stand against this type of thing now. I'm not sure how many males would agree though. The same goes for lasses who look at male music artists who show quite a bit of flesh when performing on the stage or in music videos.

Yep. The music industry will do what it needs to in order to sell their artist's/group's singles and albums.

Yeah, but if the music industry cleans up the image of its music artists, how much of an impact will this have on sales?

There is a difference, though, between what someone chooses to wear on a night out and being coerced, to use her word, in to wearing something you are uncomfortable with in a music video.

I guess Charlotte was also "coerced" into getting down on all fours and poking her pert arse up in the air for photos like this below...................which she just happened to pose for a whole 5 years after the Call My Name video. Hmmmmmmmm !

Charlotte was as sexy as anyone could ever want; a feisty personality and that curvy figure! I suspect her pop career might have been better if her records had been more outstanding.

Charlotte is a beautiful, astute and very bright young woman. She has real courage to speak out like this and at the same time more to offer the world than any of the unfortunate, manipulated and sexually obsessed so called stars she's talking about.

The sad thing is that the dumbed down public keep on supporting the pornomusic industry instead of seeing it for what it really is, not music for a start!

In another couple of years the 'performers' will be having it off for real on stage and the grunting they make will be known as the 'music'. It's so putrid

Some of the remarks in this thread sound very misguided, just because Charlotte's no longer in the spotlight like she once was her opinion's irreleavant? She's hardly a fame desperado like her ex husband, plus she once was a pop star however brief.

Sex does sell but some people seem to get the idea that anyone who disagrees with that approach should be gagged from saying anything. Said it before and I'll say it again the Hot 100 counting video views towards chart positions is the beginning of the end and it's going to become a ridiculous competition over who can be the most explicit, violent, sexual, possibly immoral too...watch this space because there's worse to come than Blurred Lines and Pour It Up.

She wasn't getting gobby.

Her comments come from part of her talk at the BBC, where she was invited to be the speaker at this year's BBC 6 Music's annual John Peel Lecture.

Who is the pot and who is the kettle? You haven't actually read the article, have you?
Breaking News.....Charlotte Church Still Exists Apparently
Yes, and as you have obviously seen, has never been off the front pages over the last couple of years. If ever there was someone with a clear view of how the media works, it is her.
Although she is right in a lot of what she says, the fact is, 'Sex sells' always has done, always will do.

If you have music execs etc throwing money at you to make music, then you have to have a bit of give and take. It is a business as well as art after all.

Yes, which is reasonable, but I don't think she is attacking the view that 'sex sells'. She is attacking the pressure from an industry that is still very heavily dominated by men for female singers to be seen as VERY young and VERY sexualized. No one is going to set up a society to protect Slave to the Rhythm era Grace Jones. But possibly Miley Cyrus, at 20, should not have been led to believe that the way to gain the respect needed for a long music career was to simulate masturbation on tv and rub up against a man whose most famous lyric is "I'll give you something big enough to tear your ass in two".
I guess Charlotte was also "coerced" into getting down on all fours and poking her pert arse up in the air for photos like this below...................which she just happened to pose for a whole 5 years after the Call My Name video. Hmmmmmmmm !

What a weird description of someone in a high necked, long sleeved dress. Do you suppose Charlotte Church is asking for all female singers to wear Burqas? She has always been unusually willing to appear in magazines etc informally dressed and un-airbrushed.
