I've only watched since the beginning of 2010, but that year really gripped me.

2001 stands head and shoulders above the rest. 2000 and 2002 were great also. I enjoyed 2003 to a lesser extent but it was still good. 2005 is the last year I truly loved. The quality has been very hit and miss ever since 2006.

2009 is the best EastEnders year I have watched. We had great families - Mitchells, Beales, Brannings, Masoods etc. We had great storylines too - Heather pregnant, Lucas's spree, Danielle and Ronnie, Who killed Archie? and it was so gripping!

I like that no one has voted for 2011! That was the worst year - the only good thing was the B&B at Christmas blown up. I think it'll be good for a Corrie one too as it'll be harder - 2010 was great, but 2005 was with the Platts.

2009 but for the past thirteen years have been the shows worst to date, the early 2000 years we're awful, dominated by the Slaters and the dreadful re-incarnation of the Watts family. 2009, although it never gave us any legendary characters like certain other years was a good balance and ended with the brilliant Archie Mitchell death. Ever since the show has been in a very sorry state.

2000 and 2001 were almost flawless, that was certainly the strongest period of the show I've ever seen (I've watched since the mid-90s). 2002 was also very good. 2003-4 was hit and miss.
Despite its flaws, and it had many, I also loved 2005: Den's murder and the fabulous Chrissie running rings around everyone. Johnny Allen swanning around the Square like he owned it; the Mitchell brothers back in business; the Armistice Day special; all culminating in that wonderful set of episodes in December with Pat & Frank, and Stacey & Jean. Plus Kat and Alfie's exit and the tragic end for Shannis on New Years Eve. 2005 was a great year sandwiched between two rather poor ones, and it remains one of my favourite ever periods of the show. The majority of 2006 and early 2007 was pretty bad but there was a marked improvement from about May-December 07. 2008 was dire, 2009-2010 were ok. Pretty much everything from 2011 to present has been beyond awful. |

I echo these sentiments very much but always thought that 2000 was overrated and up until Ethel's euthanasia/Slaters' arrival (September-ish), nothing of note really happened.

I'd go with 2004, 2005 and 2009. My memory is a bit hazy but I think I'd say 2004 as well, as I really enjoyed the show in 2004. The Christmas episodes were fantastic, didn't Den set up Phil for armed robbery that year as well?, we also had Kate/Phil, Sharon/Dennis, Chrissie and Den behind the Vic which I loved. I loved Chrissie cutting off Kate's hair in the salon in revenge for her sleeping with Den
I also loved the Barry and Janine storyline, and Dot and Den's two hander in the launderette stands as one of my favourite EastEnders episodes ever. Also Kat and Alfie were great back then, and I loved the Andy/Kat/Alfie love triangle. Didn't Marcus con the Mitchells out of the Vic that year as well? If I remember rightly, this happened during the episode where Phil was framed for armed robbery and it allowed the Watts to gain control of the Vic. Excellent stuff! Overall I just loved this year as there were so many strong characters.I'll also say 2005 as I LOVED the anniversary episode with Den's murder and Chrissie being at the centre of the show, and how that storyline ran for most of the year. Also Dennis's death was really well done and moving. More recently, the last year that I really loved was 2009 with the Danielle/Ronnie storyline and Christian/Syed. |

2001, 2002, 2005 and 2007, though even the mid noughties lull was better than some of what we're fed now imo.
