I remember Split Enz when there was no Crowded House. They used to appear on the old Today programme with Bill Grundy etc. In terms of band membership they made Showaddywaddy look undermanned! They also looked very strange and I found their music in those days virtually unlistenable.
I finally got to appreciate them from the late 70s onwards. They produced some great pop records during those times. Songs like I Got You, Nobody Takes Me Seriously and Six Months in a Leaky Boat (banned by the BBC during the Falklands War) were top quality songs. My favourite all time Split Enz track is Message to my Girl. Try and listen to the Enzso album, where the Finns and ex-SE keyboard player Eddie Rayner made new versions of old Split Enz songs with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. There is a particulary beautiful and poignant version of Message to my Girl on there. Also, there is a DVD available of Split Enz musical and documentary material. As far as I know, only available in Oz and NZ. |
