Though considering how shambolic Microsoft have been recently, the Xbox One was probably released in 1949 due to an accident involving a prototype time machine.

The most lackluster announcement ever.

At least Sony did it at Gamescom. Microsoft just put it in a press release...

I think I speak for most people when I say it's the date that matters, not how it's announced...

I'm giving it a few months before i even think of buying a next gen machine. I just don't think the launch titles on either console were good enough for me to jump aboard right away.

You are of course correct. Microsoft should have had fireworks, a brass band, lasers, zoo animals and thousands of screaming people with Xbox flags.

No one would have took the piss then.....

In the grand scheme of things they could have waited for euro gamer or when another event came up, but they decided to do a press release as soon as they decided on a date.

That's all they have to do, then the press will carry the story for free.

"Hey, do you remember when Sony made a huge deal about their release date at the games conference?" Of course not, all people care about is the actual date

Saying that, I do like He4rt idea of zoo animals

I don't know if this was how they intended to announce the release date but I get the feeling that retailers and gamers pushing for a release date may have forced the issue to provide an actual date in this sort of way.

Welcome back.

And yeah I saw some people on other sites saying how they were dumb to announce it now when there was PAX at the weekend, gamescom before that etc.

The release date is big news. News sites are not going to ignore it just because it isn't announced at an event.

I imagine they have announced the release date today because the console has only just gone into mass production so now they have a true idea on how many they can produce in time and foresee any manufacturing issues they may have.
