Good evening and welcome to our pitch, our task this week was to create a brand new weekly magazine.
The subject we have chosen for our new magazine is Reality TV. Reality TV is something that is immensely popular in modern culture; whilst we might not all want to admit it, we all love a bit of reality TV from time to time! Shows like X Factor and Strictly Come Dancing are amongst the most successful and popular on television, sometimes achieving above 10 million in the ratings, whilst shows like Big Brother are now lesser watched, but still maintain a solid and dependable fan base. We think our new magazine is the perfect chance to utilise the popularity of reality television, and create the first ever reality TV magazine! Whilst there are a few magazines that touch on reality TV, there is no magazine that solely focuses on reality TV; we think this is a shame as it is an incredibly popular concept and we are sure that there would be a vast amount of interest in it, especially when 'Soaps magazines' are amongst the most successful, and reality TV is arguably an even bigger phenomenon than soaps!
Our magazine will focus on giving you the most up to date and exclusive information on all the reality TV shows - if your loyalties lie with one particular reality TV show, or if you're a reality TV junkie like me, then this should be the perfect magazine for you, giving you the most juicy and relevant information on your favourite reality TV shows possible! On top of all the gossip and behind the scenes action of our much loved reality shows, our magazine will provide exclusive information - such as line up reveals and never seen before information - and also exclusive interviews with some of the biggest names in reality Television. As well as this, the magazine will also be jam packed with games, quizzes, competitions and a whole variety of things to take your interest.
The magazine will also include a small sub magazine which will be based on American reality television. There is a vast amount of reality TV shown in America, and it is becoming increasingly popular in the UK, with lots of them now being shown on UK TV. Many reality TV fans in the UK will also have a strong interest in USA reality TV, so we therefore think that it is a great idea to include a sub magazine on reality television in the states. This will include similar aspects to the UK part of the magazine, such as interviews, exclusive information and games - however it will be smaller as American reality television is less popular and less relevant to UK audiences as a whole. We are absolutely certain that there is loads of interest in this subject. Take us for example: why else would we have signed up to this forum, which is mostly based around reality TV? And why else would we be on this particular forum, taking such an extra interest and playing this game if we did not have such an interest in reality TV? A reality TV magazine is something that we feel is desperately needed, and if we have not emphasised that enough in this intro, then keep on reading if you want to be further convinced!
The name of our magazine will be The Reality Insider. We think this is a short and snappy name that jumps out at you and would stay in the customers head long after first seeing it. Aside from that, it is also the perfect name for our particular magazine: we plan on giving the most up to date and exclusive information possible regarding reality TV, the magazine itself will be a 'Reality Insider,' and by reading it the reader will also become a 'Reality Insider'! Our magazine is based on Reality television, so obviously that's where the Reality bit comes from.

To give you the best idea of what our magazine would look like and contain possible, we have provided some examples of what aspects of the magazine would look like: the front cover, the contents page, the front cover of The USA Reality Insider cover page and an example of one of the double page spreads from the Strictly Come Dancing part of the magazine. We've used an exclusive interview with Sharon Osbourne as the main focus on the front cover - she's a huge name so getting her for an interview would be a good catch, and her return to X Factor has been one of the most publicised stories in recent times, so people would definitely be interested in seeing what she has to say. The interview with Sharon Osbourne is the biggest selling point of this particular issue, so it would be only appropriate to have it as the main focus point on the front cover! We've tried to keep the design of the front cover relatively classy and stylish; we're aware that reality TV isn't always the most classy thing in the world, but we want to make the magazine stand out from some of the more trashy magazines on the shelf, and we think our readers would appreciate this. We tried to make the contacts page as accessible as possible; it includes headers for each of the different sections of reality TV that we'll be reporting on, so readers can easily choose what they want to read about and go from there. It also includes large, easily visible for each of the topics - so if there's a particular topic that you want to read about, you should be able to find it with ease. We've also included pictures and page numbers for some of the bigger stories that the viewers will be most eager to read about, meaning they can flick to those stories as soon as possible after picking up the magazine. As well as this, we also tried to make sure that the contents page was aesthetically pleasing, using a wide range of colours and fonts, and many eye catching photos. We also made sure the contents page was richly detailed, so readers can get a feel of the articles and make sure they know exactly what it's about before turning over. We've also included the front cover for The USA Reality Insider sub magazine, which will be situated in the middle of the magazine. This magazine will come free alongside the main magazine, so it's main purpose is to inform the reader what it will contain, using the X Factor USA build up as the main story, whilst also advertising the information on the new Survivor series, and the interview with Nene Leakes! Lastly we have provided an example of one of our double page spreads, just so you get a feel of what the inside of the magazine would look like. This particular double page spread is from the Strictly Come Dancing section of the magazine, where it is part way through giving the low down on all the rumoured celebrities. Some of the format is tailored to this particular section such as the glitter background, but the majority of the magazine will take the same format of this - the main point of interest taking up the majority of the page (the rumoured celebrities) alongside a small extra bit to give the reader a little more insight and information into what they're reading about (the 'In other news...' part.)

Below is a description of the first five issues of The Reality Insider, and what they would include.
Issue Number 1: 26th August-1st September
This is the issue that was documented through our front cover, contents page and double page spread example. The main focus points for this issue will be The X Factor, Big Brother and the rival dancing shows Stepping Out and Strictly Come Dancing. The biggest hook for this issue will be the exclusive Sharon Osbourne interview. This is something that will make sure the magazine attracts attention, and will make it have real impact as a magazine from the offset. As well as this, the X Factor section will also include exclusive backstage information from the first audition show, as well as an article on last year's finalists and what they are doing now. The Big Brother section will include interviews with the final three Housemates of the civilian edition as well as the low down on all of the Housemates in the newly launched celebrity edition. The Stepping Out section will include fact files on the show and contestants as well as small exclusive interviews from them, and the Strictly Come Dancing section will mostly focus on the rumoured celebrities as no confirmed line up will be present at the time of publication. The USA sub magazine will have a big bit on the upcoming series of The X Factor USA and what viewers should expect from it, an exclusive interview with reality star NeNe Leakes as well as lots of information on other American reality TV shows such as Survivor, Big Brother USA and America's Next Top Model. There will also be shorter bits talking about other UK reality shows such as Celebrity MasterChef, Britain & Ireland's Next Top Model, Geordie Shore and others. The final part of the magazine will include a quiz on all things reality, reality themed games such as crosswords, and a competition to win tickets to the launch show of Strictly Come Dancing.
Issue Number 2: 2nd-8th September
Following the line up reveal, the main focus of this issue will be Strictly Come Dancing, with the dominant article being exclusive interviews with all the cast. There will be full length interviews with Ben Cohen, Natalie Gumede and Vanessa Feltz, whilst each of the other celebrities will get a shorter interview. This will be the main front cover article, and will take up a large part of this week's magazine. The X Factor section will include comments on the first set of auditions, backstage information on the second weekend of auditions, and an interview with one of the stand out auditions from the first weekend: Sam Bailey. The Big Brother section will include all the gossip and information from the Celebrity Big Brother house, as well as interviews with recently evicted housemate Danielle Marr, and host Emma Willis on how she's settled in her first year as main host. The main focus on The USA Reality Insider will be the reveal of the Dancing with the Stars Season 17 cast. All of the information on the cast as well as predictions of how each of them will do will be given. The sub magazine will also include an exclusive interview with most recent American Idol winner Candice Glover on how she is getting on since winning the show, as well as information on all the other reality shows that are currently being broadcast in the USA. The UK part of the magazine will finish with articles on all the other reality shows that are currently on, such as Celebrity MasterChef, The Great British Bake Off and Stepping Out. It will finish with quizzes and games based around reality TV once again, and a competition to win VIP tickets to the first live show of The X Factor!
Issue Number 3: 9th-15th September
This issue will have a large part on food-based reality shows, with an interview from The Great British Bake Off judges Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry being the cover story. There will also be general information on The Great British Bake Off and stories about the contestants. The food section will also include an interview with the winner of Celebrity MasterChef, who will have just been revealed, on their journey throughout the competition and the series in general. The X Factor section will include the usual information and comments from the previous weekend of auditions, as well as backstage information from the upcoming set of auditions. As well as this, there will also be a feature on the X Factor franchise around the world. The Big Brother section will include interviews from the previously evicted housemates, as well as a retrospective look back on this summer of Big Brother in time for the upcoming final, and also a look around the current instalments of Big Brother around the world to keep in line with the around the world theme in this magazine. The Strictly Come Dancing part of the magazine will be significantly smaller with just a few comments on the newly revealed pairings, alongside some information from ITV's rival dancing show Stepping Out - and which dancing show seems to be winning the war! The USA Reality Insider will be themed around one of the most successful reality franchises in America: The Real Housewives. There will be interviews from Lisa Vanderpump, Vicki Gunvalson and Teresa Giudice, three of the most famous housewives. There will also be all the gossip and information from the RH shows that are currently being filmed and broadcast, as well as the low down on American reality TV in general. The last part of the magazine will once again include a round up of all the other reality shows in UK in the past week, as well as a special look at some of the most successful reality shows from outside the UK and US to keep in line with the around the world theme! On the last few pages there will be reality themed quizzes and games, as well as a competition to receive a baking masterclass from The Great British Bake Off judge Paul Hollywood!

This issue will come out just after the end of Big Brother for the summer, so the main story and cover article will be on that. The cover article will be a full length article with the Celebrity Big Brother winner, and the magazine will also include shorter interviews with all the other finalists. As well as this, there will also be a feature about what's next for Big Brother, as well as wish lists and what to expect for the coming year. The X Factor section will include an exclusive interview with last year's winner James Arthur, about his upcoming music and what he has been up to since winning the show last year. It will also include all the usual lowdown on the previous auditions show and backstage information on the upcoming last auditions show. The Strictly Come Dancing section will be smaller this time and just include information on the training and how the couples are progressing. It will be amongst the section with a round up of all the other reality TV shows such as Stepping Out, The Great British Bake Off and Celebrity Super Spa. This will also be the first issue to include columns: previous X Factor winner Joe McElderry will be providing a column on his views on this years series of The X Factor as well, whilst author and Celebrity MasterChef winner Emma Kennedy will provide a column on reality TV in general. More columnists will be added to the mix in later issues, and they will be changed up depending on what shows are being currently broadcast. The USA Reality Insider will be mostly focused on Survivor: Blood vs. Water for this issue following its recent launch, including an interview from host Jeff Probst. All the information from the recent launch of The X Factor USA will also be included, as well as all the low down from USA reality TV in general. Finally, the magazine will finish with reality TV based quizzes and games, as well as a competition to win an X Factor themed goodie bag, with signed messages from all of the four judges.

In the build up to the first live show, this issue will include interviews with the four judges of Strictly Come Dancing: Darcey Bussell, Bruno Tonioli, Craig Revel Horwood and Len Goodman. This will be the main cover article and take up a large proportion of the magazine. We will also get the lowdown on how the training is going for each of the contestants and who looks set to impress for the first live show! The X Factor section will include a large part on backstage information for the upcoming episodes of 'bootcamp', including interviews with some of the contestants at the time of filming. This issue will also include a retrospective section, look back at the year in reality TV so far, including The Voice UK and The Apprentice, and a countdown of the top 10 reality TV moments of the year. It will also include a feature on the upcoming series of I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, including the low down on rumoured celebrities and who we would like to see in the jungle. Joe McElderry and Emma Kennedy will continue with their columns, whilst we include a round up of other reality TV shows such as Stepping Out, Celebrity Super Spa and The Great British Bake Off. The USA Reality Insider will include an interview from the newly crowned winner of Big Brother USA as well as all the news following on from the finale, as well as information from all the other USA reality shows that are currently being broadcast such as The X Factor USA, Survivor: Blood vs. Water, America's Next Top Model and the launch of the newest season of Dancing with the Stars. The magazine will end with reality themed games, quizzes and a competition to win a dancing masterclass with Strictly Come Dancing professionals Artem Chigvintsev and Aliona Vilani.

The concept of reality TV, and the fact that there is an ever changing schedule of it throughout the year, will keep the magazine interesting in itself. There are lots of new reality TV shows each year as well as the old favourites always coming back; this maintains an audience's interest in reality TV, and The Reality Insider would be reporting on these shows as they come, in turn keeping the interest in the magazine at a high. Obviously the example issues I have given contain mostly the same reality TV shows as they are all from around the same period, but these focus points would change regularly throughout the year based on the TV schedule. For example, in May the main focus points would be shows such as The Voice UK, The Apprentice, MasterChef and Britain's Got Talent. As well as this, the fact that The Reality Insider offers exclusive information and interviews that cannot be found elsewhere would keep it interesting and in demand. For most magazines you can find the information that is given in their contents elsewhere; however The Reality Insider would provide exclusives that cannot be found elsewhere - such as exclusive interviews with big stars such as Sharon Osbourne in the first issue. Extra additions like 'The USA Reality Insider' would also help to keep the magazine interesting, most magazines don't offer anything like this so it would really help it stand out from other magazines and increase interest in the magazine as a whole. The USA has quite a reputation for producing high standard and unmissable reality TV, and therefore there has been an increased amount of interest in USA reality TV from UK audiences, whether they catch up with them online or when they're shown on UK TV. There would therefore be a high amount of UK reality TV fans interested in USA reality TV, meaning the 'The USA Reality Insider' sub magazine would really be something that would increase the interest in our magazine and make it stand out from others. Even for those who don't have time to watch USA reality TV, 'The USA Reality Insider' would provide all the information and everything you need to know about the top shows, meaning you can keep up to date with them just through reading the sub magazine!
In terms of longevity, once again the concept of reality TV and its schedule will give the magazine longevity itself. Reality TV is something that has been going on for a number of years now and it has maintained popularity throughout. It is starting to peak in popularity now, and we definitely do not see it dying out any time soon - any time a reality show does not get recommissioned, it is simply replaced with another new and usually improved reality show. Reality TV has become one of the staples of modern day television and if all reality TV shows were to be suddenly dropped then we would see a great big hole in TV schedules - for these reasons, we feel that reality TV is in no danger of dying out and therefore the concept of 'The Reality Insider' definitely does have longevity. As well as that, the schedule of reality TV and the fact that there is always something on will ensure that there will always be lots to write about, and that the magazine will maintain longevity all year round. We are suggesting a starting price of £1.40 for The Reality Insider magazine. We feel that The Reality Insider is worth more than some of the more trashy magazines that report on reality TV such as Heat, New! and NOW which are about £1, however maybe not as established a brand as Radio Times which is £1.60. We felt that the best place to go would be somewhere in the middle of these, which is why we have decided on £1.40. We think that this is a reasonable price for what we are offering, and also quite a competitive price compared to the prices of other magazines on the market. The price is likely to go up a little when it starts to become a more esteemed and established brand, and has a strong following and readership behind it. Our aims for selling would be relatively ambitious due to the high quality of the magazine, but also not unrealistic; we therefore feel that a price of £1.40 would enable us to make a very healthy profit.
We intend on having a pretty vigorous advertising campaign to back up the launch of the magazine. We have no doubts that the magazine will be something that will interest a lot of people and have a huge amount of people who will want to read it, however we will need to make sure that people actually know that it exists so they're able to buy it. We intend on launching a TV advert as the first means of advertising; this will not have high production costs and mostly just involve a voiceover talking about the magazine and talking through what it contains. This would hopefully be seen by a lot of people and raise awareness of the magazine. This advert would particularly be shown in advert breaks during reality TV programmes, to make sure the general people who would be interested in it would be more likely to see it. Alongside this we would also plan on advertising The Reality Insider on posters, billboards, buses and adverts on forms such as newspapers and leaflets. We are hoping this advertising campaign will make The Reality Insider magazine known to a lot of people, and that alongside word of mouth will help raise awareness of its existence around the country. My question is moreso based on the concept of the magazine. Although there are no magazines solely based on reality television, there are 3 fairly big websites I can think of that are very much focused on reality TV, my question is why would someone pay £1.40 for something they could get for free as quite a lot of the stuff you mentioned (news on the contestants in Strictly etc) is available online and is more readily available than once a week.

We've tried to add lots to the magazine to make it different from anything you can get elsewhere. Such as exclusive interviews with big stars which you cannot get elsewhere which are some of the main pulling points of our magazine. We'd also include lots of other exclusive information, such as backstage information for the upcoming shows etc. We'd also have exclusive deals with these shows that these websites would not have, which enables us to get more information and information that you wouldn't be able to get anywhere else. As the magazine goes on our relationship with these shows would get stronger and the reputation of the magazine as a whole would as well - we hope this would lead to us getting some really exclusive information, such as reveals of particular contestants in line ups. I do think you could apply that criticism to any succesful magazine however, as most of them just include information that you would be able to find online - for example the main selling point of The Radio Times is the TV listings it provides, which you can get in a load of different places now, but lots of people prefer to get them from The Radio Times. The thing that people like about magazines is the fact that everything is just there in one place, you can just sit back, relax and read up on everything without having to search the web for the best and most reliable sources to find out this information elsewhere. I think that criticism can be applied to magazines in general, yet there is still a high demand for them so I think it's the ease, accessibility and familiarity that people like so much about them, we would however also pride in producing articles and information that you would not be able to find anywhere other than this magazine.

Of course I'm not in the industry so I don't know the complete workings of it, but what I meant by that was that we'd try and establish relationships with the particular TV shows which would help us in terms of getting backstage information, but even without that I think my points still stand strong
