Watched Harry Brown for the first time last night, and what a startling change of direction it takes half way through. The first part of the film could be a gritty Ken Loach movie like Raining Stones. Then, after a series of depressing events, it's like Sylvester Stallone has suddenly taken over.

Entertaining, but strange all the same.

Kill List and From Dusk til Dawn both have completely unexpected genre shifts in them. Full Metal Jacket would fit as well I suppose even though it's not quite as jarring.

Yes, exactly what came to mind when I saw the thread title. Kubrick was always fascinated by the contrast between the discipline and order of military training and the chaos and ugliness of actual combat.

Yep, another thumbs up for Kill List here. Haven't seen it for some time, but I seem to remember the change from hitman killings to witchcraft (?) being pretty startling.

Japanese Story - the totally unexpected twist halfway through makes it a totally unforgettable movie. Toni Collette at her best. One of my favourite movies ever and one that should have got much more recognition.

Audition. First half is a romance, second half is pretty gruesome horror.

Hancock goes from being rather light hearted to a tragic epic. There was literally no hint to the plot direction it took at all in the trailers, but it came across as lacking in direction rather than a cool plot twist.

The Green Mile. Gritty prison drama...then Sci-fi. Bleugh.

The Prestige.
Spoiler

The World's End. Going into that blind, you'd swear it was just a regular comedy about 5 old friends. The actual development into sci-fi action happens very late in the day. Compare it to Shaun of the Dead which hinted from very early on about the Zombie presence.

Hancock. It's all over the place. Is it a light-hearted comedy or a gritty sci-fi drama. It never seems to make up its mind.

The Island - From a quite enjoyable Logan's Run style story, to a typical (and quite dull) Michael Bay explosionfest.

I remember seeing Japanese Story but had forgotten what happened (knew it was vaguely something bad). I'd say that was less a dramatic twist halfway through than a third act shock as it was pretty near end.

Speaking of Lynch, I vaguely recall Mulholland Drive shifting gears about halfway through. Though from what to what can't really say . Must watch again at some point.

Hancock is a real guilty pleasure for me, and I love its tonal shift even if it is a bit wtf? The bit where Charlize does her surprise 'thing' in the house, I remember hearing the audience literally gasp at preview.
