It has potential to be the worst film ever financed, thought of, made and seen by human eyes.

I wish I hadn't have watched the trailer. Jesus almighty.

Would rather watch a film about Pol Pot to be honest.

This is genuinely going ahead? I don't see why this film is being made...

Right from the announcement of this project, my main question has been - why?

It's not a particularly unusual story. Even before the TV talent show, there were lots of fictional "rags to riches" type stories.

Is there a demand for this? What's the audience? Do that many people even really know who Paul Potts is? Surely, if they had to make a film about a BGT/X-Factor contestant's "journey" (bleurgh) it would be Susan Boyle?

I'd never heard of him until this thread. Presumably, Corden's choice of subject is limited to famous (or rather not very famous) fat blokes and there aren't many of them. Actually, when he's not being extraordinarily unfunny on comedy shows, Corden's quite a competent actor.

Corden made a name for himself on Broadway last year, winning a Best Actor Tony Award no less.

Not bad for someone previously known for flashing his awful flabby gut on Comic Relief or whatever.

They may get some mileage out of his new standing I suppose, but I agree this does look like one of those 'so what' productions that makes you wonder why they're there.

James Corden as Paul Potts - WTF?
Why not just get Paul Potts? Anyway its not a very unsual story (see Susan Boyle) etc... and I would argue that Paul Potts, and Boyle especially are talented amateurs but cant measure up against the greats and professional singers.

If people are complaining about how little Naomi Watts resembles Princess Diana, it's worse that almost no effort has been made for James Cordon to look like Paul Potts. Perhaps the defence though will be that this is a light-hearted film loosely based on Paul Potts' story, rather than a true biopic.

Well it has had its debut at Toronto Film Festival and the reviews are fairly positive:

James also reveals that he doesn't actually do the singing in the movie - Paul himself does.

It actually looks like quite a sweet little drama, but its not very cinematographic! (is that a word).

It would be best just made for tv I think.

With respect, it's a movie, not Stars in Their Eyes!. take a look at another Weinstein Co production, Untouchable. Brilliant film, brilliant cinematography. The main character is a different race to the real life person. Did it take away from the film? Not in the slightest.

Same here.

I still can't understand why this project is being made when most people will have completely forgotten and ceased to care who Paul Potts is. Even when he won, he was never that big a deal compared to most talent show winners.

Not sure why the outrage for this film. There are low budget British films made every year or two that 'star' British tv actors/comedians that go by the wayside. Not sure why this one should be any different?

Are people expecting bigger things from Corden?
The X-Factor is big business so no surprises that they've made a film either about a real life person or about a hypothetical rags to riches talent show winner.

Not that i'll be watching it mind you.
