I was reading this article on the BBC new site:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotlan...tland-23973127

It made me think how unattractive bats are when seen in close-up. I don't mind them when they're swooping around the garden at dusk but they're horrible when you really look at them. Horrible pointed rat teeth, weird eyes and snouts, and when they drag themselves across the ground on their clawed wings... *shudder*

It's hard to think of them as being mammals. They're amazing creatures but I don't really like them that much.

Op - I'm surprised you're so squeamish with your current abode being 'Hell' .

I just don't like at them too closely

Look at this photo of a vampire bat:

It's really hideous! Nearly all other mammals are quite cute (human babies excepted).

Ugly beautiful as Hobbit said. Like French Bulldogs which I have a bit of a thing about.

Bats are fascinating, so cute from a distance, so ugly close up I would love the opportunity to handle one.

No, not at all. We have a colony of Pipistrelles in an old barn and quite often sit out of an evening and watch them flitting around catching moths and other insects.

As I said in the OP, I too like watching them flitting around in the garden. I'd hate to have one land on me, with its chattering teeth.

Granted - close up they do look a bit grim

Pipistrelles and other domestics can look kinda cute .

They'd never land on you, they have sonar and would stay well away. Only vampire bats would want to land on you and we don't have them over here, thank goodness.

Yes, grim. Sort of half-mammal, half-insect. I just find it strange that a mammal can be so unappealing.

Well my great-aunt reckoned she had one fly into her hair when she was a young girl.

Some of them have rabies in this country so I would steer well clear.

A man from Scotland died of rabies from being bitten by one a couple of years ago
