Plus a production break in August and 2 weeks at Easter. If C5 didn't take a break we'd catch up to the Aussie broadcasts and run out of episodes to screen.

That's when the actors get to make a bit of extra money by coming to the UK to do Panto!

Summer months in each country, makes sense to take a break, less people watch TV in the summer.

Neighbours will be off air for one calendar month over Christmas. This is identical to Australia - where because of C5 paying most of the production costs for the show, the show is now only off air for around 4 weeks of the year, as opposed to around 8-9 for H&A.

Had no idea C5 had so much input. I just assumed they bought rights to show the programme and that was it...

To answer both quotes, and to kindly correct the latter, Neighbours doesn't take a summer break like H&A b/c they film six episodes a week, meaning they have enough episodes banked to stop us from taking over. They also only take 1 month's break during December/January as opposed to H&A which has a two month break from November in Australia.

It has nothing to with C5's monetary input, as Neighbours has always roughly taken a 4 week break Down Under over Christmas / summer time. It has everything to do with the respective networks both soaps air on, and their rating system. The summer time is part of the non-rating period, so Seven stop H&A just before December as any episodes during this time won't count in the ratings; Ten have never followed it quite so strictly.

As I said above, they don't. Technically, they do just buy the rights to show the programme (which some goes into production costs), but given the amount they spend on those rights, it gives them certain perks, like liaising with FremantleMedia and TPTB and about the direction of the show. Ten no longer pay as much for the rights either, as they renegotiated their contract to pay by the ratings - the higher the ratings the more they pay, the lower the ratings they less they pay. So, Fremantle needs the UK market.
