What make and model of laptop do you have? That will indicate whether or not you can switch to 802.11g or 802.11n modes to get a faster WiFi connection.
Also you might need to dive into the set-up of the router and double check the WiFi section in there hasn't been set to 802.11b for some weird reason. Normally it would be set to something like 802.11b/g/n which means the router adapts to whatever the laptop or other device connecting to it can support.
You say you have two laptops? Presumably both have WiFi? If so what speed does the other one connect at?
