I usually don't pay much attention to critics because we rarely agree on what a good or entertaining movie is, but I think they are likely right to pan Diana.

Also, does anyone feel like we've been duped? It was built-up as though it was a big Hollywood production and it turns out it's practically a made-for-TV British production and it's going to DVD a week after release!

I feel sorry for Naomi Watts. She is an amazing actress (see Mulholland Dr) and I feel l like she's been screwed over with this project. I wish she'd gone with her gut instinct and refused to do the movie. I hope it doesn't damage her career.

It reads to me like the studio has seen the film and realised it is an utter pile of shite. They are now trying to limit the damage.

Wasn't Diana, in real life, notorious for Duping The Public anyway, so it seems fair.... after all, she entered into a defacto Marriage of Convenience with the media, allowed the media to follow her and take inordinate numbers of photographs, and conversely she exploited the media whenever her popularity started to wane, and she needed to exploit another Charity Event for no other reason than to give her PR and ego a boost.

That's odd. It's down for a theatrical release in the US on Nov. 1st. Probably a limited release though.

It would appear that the soft soap approach taken is proving its downfall (geddit?). Bearing in mind how the story ends, a tougher film that openly tackled her perhaps schematic approach to dealing with the press/media would've proved far more relevant and resonant. A missed opportunity then.

The problem with the film, other than being crap, is that it doesn't satisfy the Diana fans who regard her as a saint, or the Diana fans who wanted to see a movie that adhered to Muhammed Fayed's conspiracy theories.

In a word, no.

Regardless of your cynicism she was extremely popular right up to the day she died and her charity work was very important.

Why would one of the most famous, well liked, well respected and readily recognisable women on the planet need a PR boost?

Haters gonna hate i guess, is that it?

Agreed, you only have to see the huge amount of flowers that were placed at the gates of both Buckingham an Kensington Palaces to see that . Plus the anger directed towards the royal family over the way they acted in the days after Diana's death.

I've only seen a brief clip of the film and from what I saw it looked truly awful,

There's a whole thread on this movie already, with links to many other reviews as well as the Telegraph one.

I don't think there's any reason to feel sorry for Naomi Watts, no-one forced her to do the movie. Obviously this was meant to be the role which won her a long overdue Oscar, but it's backfired, and that happens. She'll just have to be more discerning about the roles she picks in future if she really is just going after awards.

If they wanted to save this film, they should shoot a new ending where Diana gets whacked by the s.a.s.....

Like the Will and Kate TV movie, I don't like biopics but the Liberace one looks like a good watch.

The Diana film could be the best acted piece in the world, but would be hated by her fans who lined the streets when she died and the ones who couldn't give a stuff such as me.

Indeed! It was a possibility that she'd be up against Nicole Kidman at the Oscars, with the latter portraying Princess Grace of Monaco. However, Nicole herself may have even seen the trailers for Diana and realised she's got nothing to worry about for now!

Having said that, the Princess Grace film could be a flop too!

I don't know what they were thinking casting Kidman as Grace Kelly. Don't get me wrong, she's an attractive woman, but simply doesn't resemble Grace a scrap. The only modern actress I've ever seen who did resemble her was Indiana Jones' Alison Doody (who would now be too old, I guess):

I remember the Cheryl Ladd TV biopic (still repeated fairly regularly) and she didn't do Kelly justice, either.

The Grace kelly film it's self has been delayed. Some say the panning of this film has led to the director to spend more time "perfecting it"

I think delaying that one is a sensible idea, they need to make sure it's not a second consecutive biopic flop.

Seems as if the way might be clearing for Cate Blanchett at the Oscars - she's brilliant in Blue Jasmine. And now no Naomi Watts, no Nicole Kidman and no Jennifer Lawrence as it looks like Serena, which was touted as another nomination prospect for her, is also delayed.

Could be a whole set of past Oscar winners on the Best Actress list next year , as the current tips seem to be Blanchett, Meryl Streep, Emma Thompson, Sandra Bullock, Judi Dench and Kate Winslet.

Outsider tip now is probably Amy Adams, but American Hustle hasn't screened at any of the festivals yet. She'd be a deserving winner though, doesn't seem to have been many years recently where she hasn't been nominated in one of the acting categories!

I think Naomi Watts' time will come, she just needs to be more careful about the movies she chooses to do - more like The Impossible rather than Diana!

If Naomi should of won an oscar for any film, it should of been for 21 grams.

and I don't think it will cause an upset for Jennifer lawerence. Despite Serena being delayed, she is already a contender for American hustle in the best supporting actress category.

Funnily enough, when it comes to looks I'd say Naomi Watts would could be made to look more like Princess Grace than Nicole Kidman lol

You're right, it looks as though it's made-for TV even from the trailers. Hardly a big budget Hollywood film
