Could this be sleep apnea
caras
09-09-2013
My 5 month old puppy wakes abruptly from sleep, jumps and then mouths, like she is gasping for air. Can last 10-15 seconds and then she is a little disorientated finds me and then goes back to sleep. This can happen 30-40 time a day!
We have seen the vet and showed a video. She isn't sure and is sending us to a neurologist tomorrow.

Really just wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this. Vet has never seen it before and seemed concerned

I looked on google and wondered if it could be sleep apnea?

I'm sorry I have no idea what that could be. Hopefully you will get some answers from the neuro - keep us updated.

Good luck.

What breed is she because some breeds are more susceptible and some rarely get it.

It does sound like it.

most common in dogs that have flat faces. Such dogs are termed as brachycephalic, the Greek for short head. Breeds with short heads such as English bulldogs, pugs and Boston terriers are prone to this sleeping disorder. This is because dogs with short heads have small nostrils, a very long soft palate, small sacs in their throats that protrude in the airway and a short windpipe.

Sleep apnea can cause your pet’s breathing patterns to become altered during sleep. His breathing may become very shallow or interrupted and the interruptions in breathing could last from 10 to 20 seconds. Your pet might have as many as 100 interrupted breathing episodes in one night resulting in a drop in blood oxygen levels. When the breathing is paused or interrupted, the pet is jolted out of his normal sleep pattern and breathing resumes with a gasp.
The pet may or may not be aware of the interruptions in breathing. Sleep apnea can result in chronic sleep deprivation that can, over a period of time lead to health problems.

So test were done MRI and spinal tap costing £2100 Results came back, with no concerns. They think she has a sleep disorder and said theyd provide drigs . Then about 30 minutes ago she had a massive seizure.proper foaming at the mouth and weeing/pooing.

She has never done that before. Hoping it's just because of yesterday's general.

I've never seen a seizure before. Must admit I'm really concerned

Surely that is a cause for concern, speak to the vet again.

Its frightening seeing a seizure, you feel so useless.

I assumed in my reply the vet had been consulted although reading again if it only happened 30 minutes prior to posting that would be a very quick visit.

Hopefully caras is at the vets now. That cant be right can it? Dogs dont have seizures without reason (I may be wrong).

There are reasons behind all seizures can be something like high temperature through to very serious conditions, which is why vet should be first port of call if one happens.

Hi everyone, sorry for not replying sooner. Been to the vet and they think she has sleep epilepsy (as it only happens when she is asleep)

She has had 2 more seizures since posting. The vet has given me Diazepam to be used if the fits last longer than 5 minutes, the longest has been 2 minutes, although it seemed longer than that. She will probably be on medication for life though

She's so tiny and it's so sad, my next step is to contact the breeder and led her know. I'm gutted, but she can't go back as we are all very attached.

I know it's going to be hard as I have just started Uni, but my Mum is here when I'm not, so it will be ok.

I just need to check that the insurance covers her for life, which I'm sure it does.

Bless her, it's been a tough 24 hrs. She is lying next to me shaking as I write this, hope she will be ok. Lots of reading for me now.

The poor little thing My friend had a dog that had epilepsy and it was frightening and upsetting to see.

Good luck with your little un, hopefully the vet will be able to sort the medication out so in time she wont have the seizures. x
