EE - Ians scratching
I loved seeing Ian scratch himself tonight (
), we he was sitting on the bench at the beginning of the ep I mean. I thought it was great continuity as he did it a lot when he first came back after his breakdown, it's like his signature. You can see how stressed out he was going to get when he started scratching. It's just something simple like this that will help turn the show around, it's great characterisation. It's something personal to Ians character, it's like his skin is crawling and he is scratching himself to cope with the stress. Kudos to Adam, he proves what a great actor he is time and time again. |

People have their own personal quirks and habits and great to see a character develop their own, makes them more believable. And its something subtle for the audience, its not yelling 'Ian's stressed'. Its a good technique |

I haven't seen the ep, I thought this was going to be a storyline about crabs or something

I did wonder if he had fleas not crabs, Kat had them didn't she not long after Ian returned. But I think it's clear that it's more of a stress issue rather than a hygiene one.
But I agree, it seems to be more about stress. Did he do that before? I'm wondering if its a symptom of the breakdown that was left behind after Ian recovered and that it arises in stress. It would be good if so as it would show the effect that it has on Ian not just now, but even years to come. An aspect of history to be carried into the future |

Yeah but Kat got them from her shag pad (maybe the fleas were supposed to symbolise the dirty girl theme :P). Nad yeah I suppose it wouldnt be too much of a stretch to think Ian's scratching last time was fleas.

I'm not the forums resident psychiatrist and I don't know loads about mental illness. But I imagine that the reason for the scratching when ian is stressed is that he wants to harm himself in some way. He needs to give his hands something to do, hence the scratching.

Usually its agitation from anxiety which causes the scratching. |

You are completely right. In fact remember when Stacey was scratching just before she was sectioned? It is a well known nervous reaction and something often seen in some types of mental health issues. He probably isn't aware he is doing it, many people who do are doing it as say someone would play with their hair without thinking about it.
Usually its agitation from anxiety which causes the scratching. I like the fact we seem to be going back to that. |

Oh yes I forgot that Stacey did it too. It's great that they have added it in. Like we have said before, sometimes it's the little touches that actually make the program such as Masood rubbing Zainabs feet.
I like the fact we seem to be going back to that. Adam is always good at remembering the little things. |
