EE - How would they get deserted viewers back?
EastEnders got beaten by Corrie and Emmerdale once again even after one of EastEnders special episode what was meant to get in more viewers, it was one of the reasons why Ronnie was brought back, these are the ratings they sometimes get in a rubbish episode, hasnt improved a lot!
I was expecting atleast 8m Coronation Street came out on top in the soap ratings on Monday (September 9), according to overnight data. Corrie: 9.06 million (42.8%) A further 121,000 (0.4%) tuned in on +1 EE: On BBC One, EastEnders also attracted 7.04m (31.9%) at 8pm, A repeat on BBC Three was seen by 477k (3.5%) at 10.30pm. Emmerdale interested 7.04m (36.7%) at 7pm The episode was better than usual, the characters were better last night, however hey could have done even more better and reached much higher quality, I sometimes watch it live on BBC IPLAYER, does that count as a rating? How would they get viewers back? |

EE need decent characters, decent storylines and not what we are getting at the moment!
1) Ronnies release, a farce as the prison services would let her go back to the square and cause heartache for the parents involved, just would never happen! 2) Phil diving through a car window screen and this cost £1 million, seriously seen better stunts down the skateboard park! 3) The new forest holiday bore fest!!!!!! Been there and never found local single sorts looking like a dog on heat and with a cockney father in the background sigh! 4) Shirley the thief, seen it all before she will get remorseful blah blah! 5) Ian blackmail, seriously? enough said. |

give it time to get word of mouth that EE is good again. People have heard this before so might still not be watching. I reckon by next week the ratings will be up. You can qote me on this next week if you like!

I've abandoned EE for the following reasons -
1. Carl and Kirsty - just don't like them, fed up of Branning drama, sick of wannabe hard nuts. 2. Phil going through the windscreen - please, how many times has Phil been in a car accident now? Boring. 3. Roxy and Alfie - I just don't buy them as a couple, they have zero chemistry and it makes Shane Richie's acting somehow worse that he's with her. 4. Too much focus on teen drama (and I'm not old!), the whiny on off relationships of teenagers just don't interest me. When Abi thought she was pregnant it was like whatever........ For me to get watching again I'd need... ...actual character led drama, real emotion, not led by sensationalism. No retcons, no mad suspension of reality. ...no more Mitchells or Brannings (or offshoot Moons!). Let's have a new family with NO connections to the square! ...kill off Phil Mitchell and end the era of Mitchell dominance. And get rid of pointless Sharon. Instead of bringing back old characters, create new ones with depth, not plot devices (here's looking at you Ava). ...more diversity, but not just for diversity's sake. It would take time but I don't want it to have a big disaster or another yawnsome whodunnit, I want to want to watch it, every time it's on, not just for the big events. For now I'm not watching it it's just far too badly written, it feels rushed and it's just not based in reality anymore.

You can't expect the show to improve over night. It'll take a while before it can compete with Corrie again. Last night's episode did well considering EE was struggle to get to the 7m

Should have saw the episode last night, and the Kat and Whitney episode, it was a start of a beautiful friendship ![]() ...no more Mitchells or Brannings (or offshoot Moons!). EastEnders needs to get people talking about it again. A few good episodes will not do anything, it needs a sustained period of recovery. If EastEnders can keep the ball rolling for a few months and maintain a good quality it will attract viewers back, it's a slow process.

Again, should have watched it last night, the writing improved!
One Whitney/Bianca/Kat episode can't make a summer. Yesterday's episode was good, but in comparison to yesteryear that was the standard. It has turned the corner, but too early to suggest there will be a miraculous recovery. |

Last nights episode wasn't even of the standard of yesteryear (unless you mean like 96-98). I was bored for most of it until the middle but the pacing and suspense till ronnie was shown was nonexistent which is just unacceptable. This thread is someone funny though, why would viewers come out in droves for 1 episode after approx 3 years of famine? The only way to draw fans is consistency in quality/1 big storyline would help

Serial Killers always seem to perk up ratings.

Watching it last night, I had problems with Ian being back to his old self and lying (although he at least showed remorse), Kirsty (who is the new Kat, defined by her men) and the sheer unbelievaility of Ronnie's return, including the idea that she could move anywhere near Tommy. The unconfirmed spoilers connecting her to babies made my heart sink.
What brought me back in 2005-6 was, quite simply, they had cast some great actors in new parts. Actors I'd heard of, with charisma, who I knew I'd enjoy watching - Diane Parish (loved her in The Bill), Jo Joyner, Phil Daniels. This continued with the casting of Nina Wadia, Nitin Ganatra and Samantha Womack. I believe that all soaps need actors that people love to watch, no matter what they do, no matter how they behave. Charismatic actors are gold dust to soaps and serial dramas. Holby's excellent at this (the failures being very obvious), as was Casualty til recently (even in its current state, though, it's worth seeing for Jeff & Dixie's scenes). Emmerdale, in my opinion, are doing really well in this department, as there are loads of highly watchable characters - notably Nicola, Cain, Charity, , Chas but also many more minor characters. Ruby cheers up most scenes she's in. And ED viewers were really pleased to hear Bill Ward was joining - because he's charismatic and watchable. The only characters left in EE who are truly watchable are Michael and...okay, struggling a bit there. Cora, maybe. I'm really pleased that Bianca's being given a new bloke and prospects, as she used to be so watchable but got worn down. This is why the producers have brought Ronnie back, but I fear that it's already so unbelievable that it could be the new Return of Den. |
