Because other manufacturers aren't producing solely one device with an emphasis on the top model being premium. Samsung, which is the example you used, produces devices which are sold across the entire spectrum of the market, so there's no stigma behind a "cheaper" version.

The 5S and 5C may not be "aimed" at the same market, but the pricing negates any intent. The 5C is priced out of its target market.
Apple will be producing 3 devices (4 in china) all at different price points.

I'm not sure why anyone would look at someone who has got a 5c and think that it is because the couldn't afford a 5s. In fact, using the logical that they are both expenses devices, surely they would have a 5c because they wanted one.

Unlike you I haven't seen one in the flesh yet.

Early reports suggest that its very well built for a plastic phone, presumably largely due to the steel internal frame.

But I suppose they are all biased, and you know better.
You have mentioned this steel frame in about 10 posts we get it, most phones internally are made out of macaroni

build quality is meaningless I say again go and look at it

That has largely been shown to be the case yes

I don't know that most plastic phones are as sturdy as the 5C sounds.

If build quality is meaningless, what should people be looking at.

Ah! You're talking about the cases, not the phones. I doubt cases that some people don't like will bring Apple to financial ruin.

In construction use of a steel edge frame allows for a much thinner plastic elsewhere.

That old Archos 101, the worlds lightest 10" tablet was a case in point.

Engadget described the 5C as feeling almost "ceramic".

so polycarbonate is just plastic and tacky on an S4 and yet its almost "ceramic" when gently enveloping Apple hardware .... sheesh

can we not just get some realism here ?

This was my first thought, but then we all know that Engadget has a special place all over their website when it comes to Apple products. They certainly went into overdrive last night anyway - a different article for every little detail!

I haven't held a 5c or even seen a picture of it. But from my prejudiced view of Apple hardware I know it will be the worst plastic phone ever made. I don't need facts when I have hate.

Are they? That seems to be the general consensus from early hands on reports.

"That's really the important thing about the 5C, it had to be solid while still being made out of polymer, something OEMs in the Android space still haven't quite nailed down.

The internal metal structure also helped the 5C feel rigid, the back side doesn't deform or press in like I've felt on a number of other all polymer phones. It's clear that Apple had its mechanicals nailed down for the 5C design to make sure it was rigid even if it was still polymer."

They would have been better getting something to work on the aesthetics before worrying about is surviving the apocalypse.

You have seen the 5c yes, can i add anything more to that? i take it you like it then ... but then you were the one who claimed the z10 was a game changer weren't you
You have me completely lost now - I even had to google Z10 to find out what it was. Are you sure you haven't got me mixed up with someone else? FYI I have a Galaxy.

Presumably because until Nokia came along, no-one used colour?
YES they did, these are the nokia 5110 from 1998 even before Apple started doing phones, all in different colours.

How long is this thread going to continue for?

I think everyone knows now the new iPhones are still expensive pieces of tech incl. the budget one. So lets leave it there and move on. There's really nothing new to discuss.

I don't really have any problems with the pricing. iPhones are always expensive, they have increased the price of the 16GB version by £20 but for the most part pricing is consistent with what it has always been. I for one never believed that the 5C was going to be a budget phone. You only have to look at the iPad mini's pricing to see that. So the high price of the 5C was expected. I don't think it makes any sense because most people would probably pay the extra £80 and get the 5S, and it won't really appeal to new customers in terms of pricing. The colours may appeal to some but I don't see the point in this line, to be honest I think they should have stuck with the 5. I'd rather buy a 5 than a 5C.

Obviously apple know better although from the way they have given the old yeller treatment to the 5 does make you wonder how comforting that is for many customers.

Yes - and Apple were doing coloured iMacs back in the late 90s. The point was less about who was first, and more about how "using colour" is hardly some specific thing that Nokia has some sort of exclusive dibs on.

Given that:

a. plenty of plastic phones I've looked at feel a bit flimsy.

b. from the little video, the internal frame looks much more substantial than I imagine many other frames are. In the corners it looks almost 1cm thick. Which would add strength to the frame, as well as weight, making it feel more solid and less flimsy.

c. early reports of the 5C seem to agree, saying that its feels far more solid than most other plastic phones.

So it doesn't seem that funny. Which of the above is the funniest bit?

Maybe you think all plastic phones must be equally sturdy, because they all have the same internal components.

I say all of the above based on what I have seen and read - commenting that some plastic phones feel a bit flimsy is hardly "slating other phones".

I agree with what you say. However, as I said previously their target market is China. I believe the price pitch of the 5C for western markets is to dissuade buyers and push them to the 5S instead.
