She has written at least a couple of historical novels now and at least one is aimed at younger readers. Though several (if not all!) of the TV historians seem to have branched out into historical fiction.

I'm less convinced of Dr Worsley's TV greatness.
There's nothing particularly wrong with the shift towards smaller social history - as opposed to the grand themes and known figures that long dominated popular history - but she is sometimes guilty of the same 'story making' and a focus on royalty and aristocracy. Is it drama or is it history? The answer is bound to be "both" and perhaps that's not always great. Good history tends to be dramatic anyway without needing to be 'sexed up' for the telly with jolly hockey sticks Worsley speaking in that suppressed-laugh, Jackanory voice. I don't doubt her history credentials, she's the real deal there, but the programmes seem like typical fodder for 21st century TV: history, but not too in-depth or difficult, with a bit of dressing up, dramatic invention and nudge-nudge wink-wink at the sexual exploits of various European royal houses. Infotainment. |
