Where has it mentioned in the press that she's leaving (unlike Jean)?? Of course she's not dead - just taking a break.

No one knows for sure, however just because it hasn't been mentioned in the press doesn't mean she's not leaving, soaps have done that before and not announced it to add suspense.

If he has kidnapped her it would be great if she was at Adam's, he should defo become a regular.

While I don't think she's dead, it would be the best way to write her out as her character has been redundant for too long. I remember a dum dum last year where she vowed revenge on Phil after discovering his covering up Heather's murder. Whatever happened to that plot? She's done absolutely nothing since other than work in McClunky's.

But for Carl to really make a stamp as a villain not to be messed with, he does need to have killed her. So far he's been completely unrealistic; a one man band who's turned up without any real evidence of being a threat to anyone other than bullying wimpy Ian and being bitchy to Max and Kirsty, and yet everyone seems to be in fear of him. I don't get it.

When I think of all the Eastend gangsters who have come and gone over the years, with their big network of contacts, it makes sense that they were a force to be reckoned with. But Carl is no more than a playground bully, holding his stomach in while pretending to be 'hard'.

He'll either be revealed as a true threat by murdering Shirley (which I very much doubt) or he'll be sorted, got rid of and quickly forgotten in the next few months.

Steve McFadden said in the interview on 28 August:

Do you wish Phil and Shirley would get back together?
"Well I'd love to see them together, but obviously I have been doing stuff with Letitia [Dean] who I equally like to work with. I do really love working with Linda [Henry], but it's up to the producers what they want to do. You know them getting together, that never happens anyway, things always go wrong!

"They've got an interesting relationship and I think there is a lot of love there that they've held onto even though they are not together anymore."

It suggests that she isn't dead and will be returning at some point, but not necessarily to be with Phil.

Isn't it obvious? Max will go to trial, Ian will testify, and at the last minute, Shirley will stumble in, probably covered in mud or something, and out Carl as a liar who has been blackmailing Ian.

The case will collapse, and Max will walk free

As Jake Wood has signed a new contract to stay in Eastenders, I doubt it will be for 'bit parts' when Abi and Lauren visit him in prison, so as Shirley is the only person not in the family who knows the truth, how else will he be acquitted?

Like Principal Skinner in The Simpsons episode where he disappeared?
Don't worry about Shirley, her laser-beam stare will destroy the rope she's been tied with.

I think Ian is the key. He'll end up withdrawing his statement due to the pressure, the charges against Max will be dropped due to a lack of evidence, and when Phil gets better he'll probably force Carl to reveal that his brother has Shirley. Although it doesn't make any sense that Carl wouldn't kill her, as leaving her alive creates problems for him.

This is feasibly the only way Max, Carl, and Shirley can all remain in the show together. Unless one is leaving and we don't know about it.

I think he will use Shirley to bargain for his life when Phil finds out that he tried to kill him. As you say Ian is the key, Phil knows he is involved and Phil will get the truth out of him and make him retract his statement. After that Carl is a dead man unless he's got something to bargain with.

I think you could be right, vald.

King Philth could end up flushing Ian's head down the toilet again.

It's probably part of a storyline like when Denise, Lisa went missing and every thought they were dead, I really don't believe Shirley's dead

Is it possible that nobody, not even TPTB, know yet? There could be ongoing decisions regarding the terms of renewing Linda's contract. She may be wanting better storylines and fighting for them. The result of these discussions will seal Shirley's fate.

Oh, I am cynical!!!

If it's that then Sharon could soon be joining Shirley in the celler!

Most EE villains are cheesy garbage so this outcome would make sense.
