I really don't know how you can say that about Charlotte and dismiss what Carol does by explaining away stating she is 'perfectly aware and happy' and 'it doesn't cause her any problems' which are patently incorrect observations.

Bizarre.
I'm not aware that Carol's drinking does cause her problems.

Sadly some alcoholics stay in denial their whole lifetime. My aunt has drunk a large bottle of whiskey every day for over 15 years. She now has nerve damage in her feet and hands. She is in a wheelchair and has a carer. The doctors have told her its all due to the alcohol. She maintains they are wrong and don't know what they are talking about. And 'of course I'm not alcoholic, I can give up anytime I wanted'.

It makes me sad and angry but ultimately helpless.
I've run boozers for over 20yrs and see this all the time.
So sad for the family members like you who have no option but to wait for the inevitable.

I did edit my post, making it longer but whilst on I will come clean, I am an alcoholic, not former not reformed but an alcoholic who thankfully hasn't had a drink for 14 years. I never binge drunk whilst most of my friends around me did but I was the only one who went on to not being able to start the day without a drink. We all view from different sides I guess?

One day at a time ....
Well done you! Stick with it, it's worth it, i promise x

I am not even going to read all of this so apologies if it has already been said:

I was always led to believe that an alcoholic is someone who just HAS TO have a drink at some point, even if its just that ONE every week, or so I hear. I could be wrong, just like I was wrong when I thought Carol wasnt an alcoholic

Probably not.

The assumption was that this is a gathering of people who have never touched a drop, being sanctimonious and preaching to others about the evil of drinking.

The very opposite is true and this thread has been really uplifting - inspirational even.

I'd like to add a personal pretendy high-5 to everyone who is beating the battle and a cyber hug to anyone who is struggling.
Especially BIB.

Carol is a typical functioning Alcoholic and she is perfectly aware and happy with this situation, it doesn't cause her any problems as such there are many people even on this forum are the same we all need a way to get through life some it's Alcohol some Chocolate or heroin/religion or shopping whatever mine is Cooking (not always eating) but we all need something it's not a problem until it takes over your life or you cant live without it.
Charlotte on the other hand is a Drunk and a badly behaved one at that.
It may be fine for the individual under the influence (though evidence indicates its not in actuality), it is no fun for those who have to suffer that individual having to constantly be wary.

That's for them to decide

I think she does have a problem with Alcohol. So its not exactly an anti Carol thread if it is the truth. Should people ignore it or something?

The fact her name was not even mentioned but even her fans and defenders knew who it was on about says quite a lot

Indeed. If she wants to carry on like that, then fair enough. Just don't expect anyone to not point it out.

It causes problems and upset for other people though.

Because it's just more negative Carol speculation that's been flogged to death on here. Bruce is gone now!!!! No-one else is picked on in such a nasty way. Is it satisfying to demean something which she may be, with such relish and is actually an illness.I am glad however that it has given people an opportunity to feel they can tell us about their own difficult experience of alcoholism and their brave fortitude in facing the addiction.. That is an honour. Thank you.

She is happy enough to neck Alcohol. No one is forcing her to drink it. It might be an illness but I think its a fair point to think she does have an issue with drink.

I think you know alcohol has become a problem if you start turning in late or not going to work, if it affects your finances because you're spending more than you can afford, or if you find yourself lying about how much you drink.

Carol is a heavy drinker but I don't think she is an alcoholic.

What problems like being hungover at work, missing work because of overindulgance, being known inside the house and outside of it as a problem drinker and all of her friends telling her not to drink in there?

I'm actually starting to feel sorry for her TBH.

I still don't like her and don't want her to win however.

Alcoholics aren't always as obvious as you'd think. Some rarely appear drunk and hold things together pretty well yet can't go a day without a drink.

iI was in a relationship with an alcoholic some years ago and it was hell. Luckily, it was only for a few months; once it became apparent I ended it. He, like Carol, drank to get drunk rather than socially. There were many similarities to Carol's drinking habits but I can't list them as my stupid keyboard keeps sticking and missing letters out so I have to keep going back and retyping. This post took me ages to do.

She has missed at least one appearance on Loose Women and presented when severely hung over on other occasions.

Indeed: it's not gonna be the first today either

In response to the OP's question: Alcoholics know when they are alcoholics, it's when that moment comes when you realise you can't go into work in the morning without having a drink first. You don't have to binge drink to be an alcoholic.
ALCOHOL IS ADDICTIVE, it really is as simple as that. People don't choose to be alcoholics, but if they drink alcohol habitually day after day, week after week, year after year, they WILL become alcoholics.

Carol IS an alcoholic and she probably DOES know that she is, but she is not prepared to publically admit to the fact, nor is she willing to seek help for her addiction because she is not ready to give up drinking yet.

For someone like her, it will probably take an emergency admission to hospital with acute pancreatitis or liver failure to force her hand, because pancreatitis kills 10% of those suffering from it.
I have worked in intensive care and seen people vomiting litres of blood from ruptured oesophageal varices (varicose veins in the oesophagus caused by portal hypertension due to liver cirrhosis) and it is terrifying and can happen without warning and cause death within minutes.

If she does stop drinking, it will have to be through necessity rather than choice.

Missed work once! You are kidding me.That will apply to so many people so I will ignore it.Going to work with a hangover? The same. Just how ridiculous can this get?

The first part of that is TOTALLY untrue!!! The second part is pure speculation.
