Nearly a year since Carl left ED...

I'm not sure if it was down to Stuart Blackburn. Carl's world in the village had kind of shrunk ever since he split with Chas. His business didn't really allow him to interact with other villagers, except Edna. Jimmy was his only family. He didn't have any friends in the village and he didn't even interact with Cain, Charity or Debbie as enemies much. I think it happened over quite a long period of time. He didn't seem to develop any new relationships either - the one with Megan was a complete failure (hard to tell whether that was intended from the outset or not). It's very similar to what's gradually happening with Declan too. Had there been a way to involve Carl with a new family, or perhaps start up another business which employed lots of villagers, that could have been a new direction, but otherwise, he was becoming peripheral even when Stuart Blackburn started. I don't mean that as a criticism of the character or actor but he seemed to get left behind a bit.

I think Carl was a great character in the past, but to be fair he didn't really do a lot following the jilted wedding and as others have stated, he was difficult to incorporate in to plotlines.

Great character, good actor, but better he left when and how he did than hang around gathering dust for a few more years.

There were far more deserving people to be killed off... Declan, the Spencers, Rhona the Moaner... Cameron...

I mentioned this on an emmerdale fan page on twitter, and it got retweeted.

I was thinking of the ED we had ten years ago (or maybe longer!) and the long running story of Chas and Carl. I know I used to be hooked on Emmerdale wondering what was going to happen next with them.

The soap seems to be getting back to it's former glories, thank god. However I would love to see a knock on the back door of the pub, Chas open it, and Carl be there!”

Maybe he could be getting out of the shower and its all been a dream

I understand there has to be holes in the road but they don't have to be affairs all the time. That's just lazy and cheap on the writers/ Producer's part.

More believable Carl/Chas having an affair than Ashley or Laurel...
