All have had their ups and downs but nothing has ever or will ever be as big as EastEnders was in the 90s till early 00s

The show was on a different level In popularity like nothing seen before or after.

So what point are you trying to make? It isn't even a question.

I'd agree. The original Dallas must count as one of the most successful t.v programmes, never mind soaps, ever.

In this country, Coronation Street in the 60s was bigger than everything since.

Worldwide, Dallas in its heyday. But that does have an advantage over the British soaps, being American.

Hahaha! Excellent.

I believe in terms of viewing figures it was Eastenders about 20-25 years ago. I remember seeing that on tv a while ago. Whether that makes it most popular, I dunno. You could argue it's Corrie in terms of it's sustainability or Dallas in terms of it's global success.

Coronation Street's viewing figures from 1961/2-5 are the highest in UK soap history, peaking in 1964. EastEnders's from the 80s were inflated by adding on the omnibus figures. I think the early 60s are just that long ago now that people forget just how massive it was in those first few years.

It has to be Dallas. It was a real game-changer. And no other soap has ever gotten close to the madness that surrounded 'Who Shot JR?'

What are you talking about? Have you not seen how popular EE is in 2013? Did you not see the Liverpool and Barcelona UEFA Cup semi-final get postponed again for snakegate? And did you not hear about the Queen re-visiting the set just to meet Alice and Tamwar? It's definitely the most popular at the moment!

This thread is baiting a war of words. Pointless and clearly the OP is looking for validation.

To be fair....if figures were investigated...it would probably be Crossroads....closely followed by CS...back when Crossroads was the only proper soap on tv....it was probably watched by every family in the UK & Ireland. And CS was bringing in 20 Million plus long before EE ever appeared.

Crossroads was not shown in Ireland. Some people on the east coast had aerials that picked up UK channels but not enough to be significant in viewing figures.

Coronation Street debuted on Irish TV in 1978 with episodes from 1974 played every night until they caught up

I've always thought Dynasty was overrated and if it wasn't for Alexis vs Krystle it would of faded away.

I agree that it was overrated but I'm responding to what the OP asked was the most popular. Worldwide they were.
