Total newbie and stuck

Could someone please suggest a tablet for me?

I am not being lazy I promise, but I would like to buy or order one this weekend and the more I research them online the more confuddled I am getting

All I want it for is to use the internet via wifi, not mobile [can't afford that as well] and also to take photos and possibly video but only fun stuff, not anything remotely important. If I could also download games like Candy Crush etc that would be a bonus.

Budget, as little as possible but can go to around £250

Thanks in advance for any advice

If you want to make sure that you have access to the widest range of games, then make sure any of the Android tablets you look at have Google Play pre-installed.

Thankyou, both of you. Am looking now, some of them seem very cheap.

If you've got the time the best way to choose is to go to a PCworld or a John Lewis and try as many of the tablets as possible before you decide.

If you're considering a small tablet the new Google Nexus 7 is very good.

Two big factors to decide are the size (7" or 10") and the operating system (Android or Apple's iOS on the iPad range).

Thanks everybody, much appreciated. I have a much better idea now.

Just one more thing - would anybody / everybody bother with a higher spec refurb or lower spec brand new?

It depends on whether you want a 7", 8" or 10" device, but I would recommend getting this, it's high spec and a good price.

I'd always go for the higher spec refurb over a new one.

I would get a 2nd hand iPad.

Try before you buy is the key here. Any tablet will be cool on its own but its when you compare one to the next that you get a real feel for whats out there. I personally cant see past the ipad but that is purely a personal choice, there is no right or wrong here. A cheap tablet may do everything you need and you will be chuffed with it in which case save you cash and get one.

I would be wary of a Second hand Ipad , I have 2 ipod touches with batteries that don't hold their charges more than a couple of hours any more and replacement of batteries isn't really cost effective in my opinion which makes them pretty paperweights .

refurbished Ipads from Apple have new batteries fitted as standard

Hi again everybody

I am sure you have been waiting all day, biting your nails, waiting to know what I finally decided

I'm afraid I went all predictable and got an iPad mini. I haven't had much time to explore it properly but so far so good.

Thanks to all who kindly helped.

called into Tesco at Wrexham yesterday, some of the data on display for tablets especially the Microsoft Surface RT 10.6" 32GB Tablet inc. Touch Keyboard, is rated as having a rear camera of 5 megapixels according to Tesco, however on furtherchecking its only 1.5 megapixels both front & back.
Yet on questioning the salesperson(trying hard for a sale) insisted the camera was 5 megapixels.

I am looking to buy a tablet with a reasonable camera, but it always pays to buff up first & read what the experts report.

Refurb iPad if your looking at a 10" tablet, direct from Apple, they come basically brand new, you will never tell the difference between a refurb and brand new (or your shouldn't be able).
