Why is Eastenders still losing in the ratings to Emmerdale?
As Im sure most of you are aware, EastEnders has just had two big weeks of storylines. The £1million stunt car crash as well as the return of Ronnie Mitchell. Two weeks where you'd have expected viewer interest to go up, especially as the BBC trailed these episodes.
HOWEVER ratings for the last two weeks shows us that EastEnders is still losing to Emmerdale most days of the week. The excuses over the summer was that viewers were on holiday so thats why Eastenders was coming third. But now that school term has started, the weather's gone darker, and Eastenders storylines have heated up - why is Eastenders still coming third in the ratings? Take yesterday for example: Emmerdale got 6.9m/36pct while Eastenders got 6.8m/32pct. EE also lost to Emmerdale on Thursday. Thats not even mentioning the fact EE is 2million behind Coro St. I dont understand why viewers arent returning in bigger numbers?

Yeah but this week;s episodes have been good. 86pct of voters on an independent digital spy poll said they really enjoyed this week. Bearing in mind the BBC has been trailing the episodes, I wouldve expected more viewers to tune in.

I think Emmerdale has been the all round best soap for years now. I don't know why it has never won any soap awards.

It's extremely hard to win viewers back, especially when they have been gone for so long. After a while of not watching shows and getting out of the habit you just don't care what ratings grabbing stunts it pulls out anymore, and that's a problem for EE. Especially because most viewers departed the show on a bad note.

Because ED has storylines while EE only has hype. Philth's 25th car crash and Ronnie's guide to rebuild your life in just five episodes is hardy what I would call kitchen sink, complex, interesting storylines.
EE only have themselves to blame they've taken their audience for granted for years and insult the viewers intelligence on a regular basis. |

Viewers take time to win back and as much as I like Eastenders, it was rather shitty for a few years. Although it is improving and has been enjoyable for a while now, it is still a shadow of its former self.

I thought EE would have done better this week with viewing figures. The episodes were kind of average not that amazing to be honest I've seen people say " its been an amazing week for EE" it's been ok not amazing. It might just take time for them to regain the viewers I think it will be something that happens gradually not overnight,
today's ability to record on sky and virgin and the Iplayers maybe people are just finding alternative ways to watch soaps. |

They should have acted back on it back in 2011, but they didn't. They saw saps were tuning in anyway so they stopped putting the effort in.

It might be a bitter pill to swallow, but so far everything hetty100 has said is absolutely true.
That said, viewers are more cynical nowadays, especially about EE which has let them down for years now. A couple of good weeks isn't going to get viewers back - it's going to take months and months, but if they're serious about knocking this awful show back into shape, then that is what must be done. The BBC have shown nothing but contemptuous indifference about EE for at least three years - now they're paying the price for it. Serves them right. I only feel sorry for the actors! |

Because people have over hyped the last two weeks of episodes which at best were average compared to the other soaps episodes and because Emmerdale simply beats Eastenders hands down.

To be fair its not really losing when you take into account the +1 viewers. Adding together original and +1 ratings makes both soaps more or less neck and neck really. Ronnie's return has probably added around half a million viewers to EE and while they probably were expecting more, they should be grateful because its half a million more than they had before and the production team + writers etc should work their asses off to maintain the quality and viewers they have now and more will probably come gradually.
I can see another few hundred thousand viewers being added on for the return of David Wicks so hopefully the quality will keep getting better. |

It's not just a case of waving a magic wand and suddenly millions of people are turning up. It will take time, but the show is going in the right direction and there's lots of interesting things coming up.
I don't know why people are so caught up on the ratings, if you like it watch it, if you don't like it don't watch it. What does it matter what everyone else is doing? |

I rarely watch Eastenders these days as I find it very boring and at times unwatchable, especially during the "Lauren" storyline |

What are those exiting things coming up? More returnees and some exits. But in term of storyline EE is still a desert.

It takes a long time to get people out of their TV viewing habit but EE managed it over time and now they have to try and get all those viewers back which I imagine will be difficult and take longer than a week.
