In this clip, Kenny Beale returns after 20 years living in New Zealand. Pete confronts his brother about sleeping with his then wife Pat and the possibility he might have fathered Simon.

This clip is humourous for Pete's (Peter Dean's) dramatic acting and for the random comedy moment at the end that completely undercuts the drama of the scene . Enjoy.

Its such a shame they miscast Pete Beale. His character might have still been around now if they had used another actor. Two producers tried to get rid of him but June Brown kept threatening to quit if he was axed so when a producer finally did have the guts to axe him in 1993 June kept her word and quit!!

The bloke who played Kenny perhaps? Would he have made a better Pete?

Leslie Grantham (Den) originally auditioned for Pete but was considered too good looking for the role

From Wiki "Peter Dean was an actor known to Smith and Holland for his role in the crime drama Law and Order. Dean was from the East End of London and his family owned a stall in the market, just as the character he auditioned for did. Holland and Smith have said that despite the fact that Dean gave a disappointing reading at his audition, his tremendous enthusiasm for the part and for the show made up for it. He was subsequently offered the part"

Explains a lot. They were very keen in the very early days for genuine Eastenders for the parts (hence where the name for the show came from) and people being from similar backgrounds to the characters they were portraying. So it seems Dean's background gave authenticity and realism to the role and made up for his lack of acting talent

 I just knew this was going to happen. Seriously, Scrabbler, I know you believe me and ben are the same person (I also believe you and Dan-Bevis are the same person), but just put this to rest now! It's not the truth, so...

Could you kindly tell me the evidence that you have? You can't just assume, you know.

Peter Dean may not have been the best actor, but that clip was more believable, tense and dramatic than virtually anything we see on EE these days.

Also, the language... why have the BBC become so pious over the last 25 years?!
