I've just looked them up. They've got like 1.6 million followers on twitter, so presumably have quite a following (possibly due to having supported 1D)
But yeah, this girls twitter that I found it through is all 'OMG it doesn't really sound like them but I love it', 'Is it them though it doesn't really sound like them but OMG it's perfect' etc etc and then finally 'GUYS IT'S FAKE IT'S NOT 5SOS IT'S NICKY MCDONALDS NEW SINGLE ANSWERPHONE'
I wonder whether it's a prank, a mistake (both acts are on Sony labels so entirely possible it's human error) or whether it's a REALLY GENIUS form of cross marketing - a bit like when Stock Aitken And Waterman put out Roadblock on an uncredited white label and all the hip black American radio stations played it to death without realising it was the same honky people responsible for Rick Astley.
Whatever, it's AMAZING.”
I fully agree and it's absolutely hilarious yet genius at the same time. I'd love to believe this is "a REALLY GENIUS form of cross marketing" that you refer to. In fact, if you look on iTunes right now 5SOS are at #15 on pre-orders yet there isn't a preview.
What are the chances people are pre-ordering Nicholas McDonald thinking its 5SOS, then Sony/RCA make the switch. Because if that's the case, then all these people pre-ordering 5SOS are technically pre-ordering Answerphone.
The thought of that is just incredible if this has been purposely done. It seems too good to be true but would be so amazing from a marketing point of view.
Even funnier is that as of now
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jCYDAv5Oi4 hasn't been deleted so even more people are hearing Answerphone (all over the world this is as well) and thinking its 5SOS.
EDIT; Ok, so it's a fake account on YouTube but still that's some funny stuff going on right there.
