Which reminds me, I saw something (can't remember where) where Nicky had described himself as a singer *and* songwriter, so maybe he has at least been dabbling in songwriting for a while. If nothing else it increases the hope that he'll get some writing credits here and there and have more control over what direction he takes.

She's going into long term care now, so that's the best thing and what I was really hoping for. I think Nick especially needs to do more 18+ stuff in terms of building audience, was G-A-Y his only one so far? I don't know what issues an under 18 performer has in performing at 18+ venues is though, if anyone does?

It's funny, I keep thinking of songs I'd really LOVE to hear Nicky sing. I don't think I've ever experienced that with a singer before, though that's possibly because they're already associated with their own material, whereas XF contestants we obviously become familiar with them THROUGH their singing other people's songs. I guess the closest I've come is wondering what the odd Pink Floyd track would sound like if Roger Waters and David Gilmour swapped vocal duties. Still, I certainly haven't been preoccupied with what any other previous XF contestants might sing after the show.

I agree with you entirely. I find it hard to believe that his vote were all coming from teenage girls. I guess an under 18s gig doesn't exclude over 18s, but I certainly would feel a bit dubious about going to one. I'd be fearful I was the only proper adult there.
But, as twitter demonstrates, continually, I suppose the under 18s are the loyalists and the shouters, and if they're excluded from being able to go to a significant number of gigs, it could massively backfire. I saw some prissy, disgruntled tweets relating to the G-A-Y gig being over 18s despite the fact that ALL of the XF contestants perform there after the show. It was all ALL YOUR NICKYS BELONG TO US and heightened teenage drama.
I'm half finding myself wondering about getting tickets for the XF tour, just so I can go see Nicky without looking like a complete fruit loop. But that seems drastic. But I want to see him gig. But OH GOD HELP ME. But but but... his voice. But XF MACHINE MONEY-DYSON. But yeah.

I think because Luke's already got very good original stuff out there that I don't have that 'do this, do this!' reaction about him, and the only other contestant I was that passionate about was Leona Lewis, even though I never had any interest in listening to her after the xfactor, I just passionately wanted her to win. So while I very much want to hear more of Luke's original stuff rather than covers, I don't really think about covers. I think about covers *I* can play, not other people, I actually find it hard to listen to stuff and think about other people playing it rather than if/how I could. Self absorbed? **** yeah

God, yes, exactly that. I really think I'd just give it a miss if Luke played Glasgow, just because it would all be screaming wee girls, he's so young and that's his audience and who he'll be writing for. I mean even at a proper gig too. Feels a bit crap really :/

I saw some sad tweets about Luke's first gigs all being 18+ until the one last saturday, but there wasn't bitching yet, but he maybe has a bit of a different appeal to Nick, since he comes across as a lot older than just a few months. And a mix is fair enough tbh, I was just a bit concerned (sounds OTT but I was a bit) that *all* Nick's before GAY were for kids.

I *never* think about covers I could play. I think about how I could entirely change the arrangement of something to make it into something else. i'm probably weird like that. I think it's a hangover from my art education.

How many has Luke done now? Nick just did the two up in Scotland before the one at G-A-Y as far as I'm aware, which were both under 18s. I've seen quotes from him before where he's said that most of his fans are youngsters. I'm not sure if that's what he actually believes or whether that's who he's been told to target, though it seems incongruous with the quality of his voice and the type of songs he sang on the show. I suspect that may be yet another hangover from Louis' rigid box-thinking ('You're a Young Person, have you met this other Young Person? I think you'll like each other')

I think we should all club together and start our own label and sign Nicky and Luke. Luke can do his own stuff for you and Nicky can sing all the songs I want him to sing. Eventually, if we remember, we might get a record or two out there also.

Yeah there is a bit of a disconnect. Like you say, I guess it's about the visible demographic. Sounds like he had a great reception at G-A-Y though, which is fantastic!

Uh well urm yes well you see well the autotune is deliberately autotune and not pretending a bad singer can actually sing autotune so you can see (well hear) past it if you get what I mean and the rap paraody well yeah but he sings proper singing on other songs and er well um eh yes.

I think he did the odd one here and there during the run of the show but I think he often said he'd do one and fell asleep or something, because people would complain he hadn't answered enough. I must say, I do wonder how much his heart condition and the medication he's on has affected the suits perception of him as a potential cash cow - i.e. they couldn't work him like a horse. Unreality tv ran a horrible article about him called something like 'If you're Scottish and voting for Nicholas McDonald stop it now' basically saying that him winning would be a disaster because he's be destined to be a flop. They ran it with a picture of him napping backstage at the final as if to say 'he doesn't look very pop-starish here, does he?'. I still wonder whether that was part of the reason for undermining him on the show. There was a particularly dubious VT on him napping a lot without any mention of *why* he naps a lot.

True, and also true in wider context I think. Everyone seems desperate for something to get outraged about all the time, whether it be about a joke about the Queen on telly, or the whole Russell Brand Sachsgate thing. If only people got as easily outraged by things that really matter.

Oh really? I'm feeling shortchanged by Nicky now! I suppose he's doing the album at the moment, but it seems he's going back up to Scotland after the gig on Saturday which suggests there's not going to be a gig in London any time soon. Also suggests that he's not been in the studio for very long, which is possibly concerning for the upcoming album. Unless he's just popping up for a home-visit before heading back down again.

Yep looks like it. Wish I'd gone! I hope they're not completely underestimating his audience outside of the tweenies, that would be a massive mistake IMO.

I'm afraid the sound of autotune or melodyne makes me bridle generally, whether it's 'subtle' or full-on stylistic choice. The only song I can think of where I've ever got past it totally is Love Hangover - not sure why on that particular track. Might be the tribal drums compensating.
