Some comments quoted:
Tony Sweet - Tony Sweet It took me a minute to understand him LOL
John Bagley Jr. - This young man has an amazing voice , I would like to know how hard it is for him to lose his accent , when he sings a pop song , as in the Adele song , he has a huge career ahead of him I am sure of it .

Q? Does this accent makes it all cute and authentic or can it turn into a handicap (especially outside the UK)?
Some in the US underline their personality (intentionally?) with an Appalachian (blue grass) or with a Deep-South accent.

It all makes sense now as Nicky posted a small video on Facebook a while back where he was sitting in a studio playing the guitar and singing When We Were Young.

So it looks like this video has been a work in progress for a while. Still great to finally have a new video on Nicky's YouTube channel. I hope this means we will slowly start getting more videos.

On top of that, I'm still hoping that the second album will get released eventually. I still think his tracks Love Again and Love Departed are two really good ballads - both of them would be a hit if they were by Ed Sheeran and Bruno Mars so I hope Nicky does get his breakthrough at some point.

His voice has matured so much over these last 3 years. At least he's continued with his music and he still continues to do gigs (both public and private) so he's setting himself up nicely.

Did you watch that video clip from The Scottish Sun Alex? I'd be impressed if Nicky did start getting into acting work. We've already seen Nicky doing a bit of acting in that UKTheatreSchool Glasgow clip that spooling posted.

The Green Day one? Made me laugh, think he was wise to side step that one. Maybe one day, who knows? He's full of surprises.

Good to see some activity on YouTube again. No one could accuse Nicky of overdoing his promo

I think it works in Nicky's favour as when he does post a brand new video, there is a massive interest boost instantly, and that gets people talking and before you know it Nicky is back in peoples minds.

Crickey!!!

Just went on YouTube and it appeared in my Recommended page. It's like buses - you wait for one, then three all come at once.

About to have a listen. I'm still amazed at how well Calum Scott from BGT has ended up doing with his version of Dancing On My Own.

65k views on fb, in less than 24hours. It's done well, as indeed it might as it's very good.

About time!!!

I know in previous weeks they've had former contestants performing on Xtra Factor even if its just a quick 20-30 seconds.

I saw the picture of Nicky with Nicola Sturgeon and thought to myself "he is like Scottish royalty now".

I'm still hopeful that Nicky will release a new album.

Nicky is featured on a new Jack Eye Jones single called Let Me Be Your Fantasy which is released on 30th September. Unsure if it's a cover of Baby D's 90s dance anthem, or a new song.

A new video has been uploaded to Nicky's YouTube channel.

Let Me Love You

Alex, did you watch Xtra Factor tonight? Nicky was in fine voice. Just a shame it was such a short performance but was to be expected. I'm glad they invited Nicky back, and hopefully he'll have had the opportunity to meet up with all those people he worked with in 2013.

I wonder if Nicky got chance to meet up with the judges.

I did see it and agree that the too short performance was really good. One thing I did like was how laid back and in control Nicky was, no hint of desperation or last chance. Mind you, there was plenty of that elsewhere on the show..... is it just me thinks XF has reached beneath the bottom of the barrel this year?

The thing with Nicky is that whilst he might not have a string of UK #1 singles and a million selling album under his belt, he's continued to do gigs (including private gigs which can pay handsomely) as well the his continued charity work. He's definitely made a name for himself in Scotland and has appeared on STV several times.

He doesn't need to be desperate. Cream always rises to the top.

Personally, I thought Xtra Factor was worse last year. I'm finding this years Xtra Factor strangely funny to watch which worries me slightly, but there you go!!! lol The talent pool for 2016 is appalling though and having seen the spoilers for who makes the live shows, 2016 could be one of the worst years yet for X Factor.

LOL how did that slip the net?

It looks like Nicky has started to follow in Conor Maynard's footsteps uploading new covers on his YouTube channel.

It's good that he's still putting these performances out there but I'd much prefer some original material. I guess it's left to be seen but I think it's a shame that neither Love Again or Love Departed got released as singles as I genuine thought they were both really good songs.

I'm back! DS have delightfully unbanned me after they put a Ban Amnesty on. I was the one who started this thread.

Interesting to see which direction Nicholas takes next. I remember sending his management a lengthy email about two years ago, which read like this:

Hi. I have a message consisting of several thoughts aimed at Nicholas McDonald and the team he works closely with on producing music which is released into the public domain.

I speak as someone who is not a professional reviewer of music, nor someone who has any qualifications in music. I am basing my views based on past & present X Factor contestants and their activities and in many cases lack of success after the show which, as a fan of the show, has tended to disappoint me.

it's a question of what can be done differently. In Nicholas' case, technically his voice is about right, the only problem is it can sometimes come across as quite bland and it shouldn't have to. In regards to the debut album, the obvious use of reverb and autotune resulted in, in my opinion, an album which came across as cheaply produced. I don't think Nicholas needs to use autotune, or at least much of. His success with voters on X Factor was due to his performances of ballads but there's no reason why that can't be his niche. Looking outside the show there isn't really a need to alienate the group of people who voted for him on X Factor - the "older generation" as these are the people who generally vote the most on X Factor. The likes of Sam Smith have proved that there is a place for ballads in the charts - the key is it being memorable, mass appealing (something that will appeal to everyone), well produced and it being clear that emotions are being conveyed through the song, as well as a certain message. A mid-tempo song which doesn't come across as bland but is at the same time capable of displaying Nicholas' great vocal abilities is something that could work very well with the right execution.

There's nothing I like to see more than X Factor acts having success in the real world. However, this success doesn't come without support from both fans and the record company. I don't think Nicholas should be marketed as a teen popstar - I think his vocal abilities are too good for that. I think he should be marketed as an artist who can sing pop and swing - I know there were a lot of 'Baby Buble' comparisons on X Factor but I do think it makes sense to an extent - we haven't got an artist like that - a young male who can perform big band, both the upbeat songs like "Feeling Good" and the slow songs like "Dream a Little Dream" and this is something which, as Michael Buble has shown, is mass appealing. With the right material, I believe he is capable of succeeding in the charts and winning over the critics who weren't a huge fan of the last album - it can allow people to sit up and say/think "Wow, this kid can really sing" instead of making comparisons to previous X Factor acts who have not performed very well in the charts - Leon Jackson is the prime example of this.

Feel free to respond if you wish to continue correspondence.

I take it you never got a reply, or maybe just an automated reply?

I found myself chatting to Eileen (Nicky's mum) on Facebook. I'd already produced a song which I'd uploaded to my SoundCloud account and asked whether they were interested in getting Nicky to record the song with his vocals and I could supply the backing track. Eileen thanked me for the link and then mentioned Paul (Nicky's PR) and said if I had any ideas I could either e-mail Paul (his e-mail is on Nicky's website) or Eileen and she gave me her e-mail address too.

I have made some mixes sampling Nicky's vocals and transforming them into dance tracks.

I'm usually unimpressed with the Boys category on X Factor but there was something about Nicky's vocals that caught my attention. His vocals seem stronger now than they did 3 years ago. Still hopeful someone out there realises the potential and Nicky gets to release a second album of really solid pop songs. I've not been too keen on his Jack Eye Jones collaborations though. I dare say I much prefer my own dance mixes more than the professional ones.

Yeah, just a standard "We'll pass your message on" response. That was the end of it.

I'm usually more drawn to the male vocalists on X Factor anyway, though I thought they could have done more with Nicholas on the show. I did really like his recent YouTube cover of When We Were Young.

Nicholas is managed by his mother-manager. We actually don't know what the family wants, nor do we know what they can get done on the music market.
Keeping Nicky close to home and family may be an objective, for a variety of reasons including Nicky's heart condition (long QT) eventually.
In the Glasgow area Nicky comes in the spotlight from time to time.
What's curious to me is that he brought some decent new songs at gigs, but never got them released. Reportedly he's working at an album (since quite some time).

It costs money to make an album, and Nicky's family would need to establish how much money they're willing to fund the album but also how much the album would sell to determine whether they made a profit or not.

With big record labels, the more they invest in an artist the chances are the more they pay to get their artists' music heard. Money talk and regardless of the talent, if the money isn't there then the music "industry" isn't interested.

So much for nurturing young talent...and people wonder why the same 35 songs are spending two months in the top 40!!!
