I didn't! I was delayed in posting by realising I'd missed a load of posts while I had been clackety-clacketying out my previous couple of posts.

I think it's the first time it's stayed up for so long, and so prominently. Given that such a big deal was made out of stopping Sam C selling his 'Mrs C' tshirts (WHO IN ****ING GOD'S NAME WOULD WANT ONE???) And Lucy's ep was taken off as soon as it became common knowledge (not saying it wasn't producer knowledge before then though).

Quote:
“I do agree it's intriguing though. It does suggest to me that there's more at play here than the whole 'busker from Devon made good' thing going on - the shadow of a much larger machine looming on the horizon.”

That's so War of the Worlds. Or the Tripods, does anyone remember the tripods? But I do agree.

Quote:
“Because that's what you do, innit? Before you even consider what could be. WHen you first learn an instrument you explore it's every nook and cranny. You start to write songs if you're son inclined (or in my case start to make beats etc because you can't structure a song easily and you can't write lyrics for shit). I used to spend hours upon hours with my synth and sampler creating little things. I never ever thought of it as a possible career. I just loved doing it and had vague fantasies of being the next Trevor Horn. The one time it occurred to me that maybe I should have followed through on it was when the Prodige released Voodoo People and people started banging on about how it was new and exciting because it fused heavy guitars with breakbeat etc. I was miffed because I'd made a little thing with PJ Harvey & Kool & The Gang samples which sounded INCREDIBLY similar about a year earlier. 'Oh what could have been' I thought to myself.”

It's a shame we have such totally different musical tastes, we could have taken the world by storm!

It did occur to me that Wish You Were Here is a 12 string guitar song, and I'm buying one in the next couple of weeks; I had great plans about kidnapping Nicky and forcing him to sing it for you. That sounds horribly sordid

Quote:
“Entirely possible. Though the more I think about it, the more I feel like there may well have been at least a wizard behind the curtain, if not a fully fledged machine.”

Probably a Tripod *nods*

Quote:
“Ah yes, I forgot about that. Is it definitely still the case? I do wonder how that works within the wider context of Sony, given that actual Syco is a very small team.”

Well I think it's with Sony via SYVO, they're bound to Sony unless Sony don't want them afaik.

Quote:
“The other possibility that occurred to me is that a deal may well have been struck beforehand (an extrapolation of your lawyer idea, if you like) from another record company - either within Sony or without - and that could explain why we have heard nothing about contracts etc as yet.”

That possibility hadn't occurred to me, interesting idea.

Quote:
“Another company could well have 'bought' space on the show, for instance, in the same way that Sam C is reputed to have been a placement on behalf of SImon Fuller. These deals are not unusual - it's not a huge leap from record companies buying shop floor space in HMV or, indeed, a special BRIT award being created for One Direction to make sure they win one.”

For which they proceeded to thank the wrong radio station, and briefly got blacklisted

Edit - wrong award, but the lolishness remains the same

The idea of 'buying' an entry into the finals had never, ever occurred to me as a possibility; I love your insights

Whotf would buy a slot for Sam C?!

Quote:
“Much more remote idea here: Does Tory Barlow still have his own label? He'd be able to pull strings for sure...”

Well he looks like he's operated by strings, so...

That idea just makes me massively /shudder though

Quote:
“I'm glad. This is all speculation on my part, obviously. And I'm quite possibly coming at it with my own set of prejudices ”

Where would be we without speculation!

Sigh. Once again, it's late, far too late. You're a terrible influence, Mr Mmpfb. I've been forced to change all my plans (into the way I wanted them to be all along, coincidentally ) because of you, I hope you realise this!

Bed. Good night And thanks for another great night, I so enjoy talking with you.

I was re-reading the last few pages making sure I hadn't missed anything and getting upset at some awful types and errant word in my posts

Certainly interesting.

I'm still annoyed I didn't order a 'NICHOLAS McDONALD'S NO 1 FAN' tee.

I remember the tripods. My brother lives in Woking. Every time I visit him he reminds me of where the tripods landed (about half a mile from his house)

Do we? I kinda assumed there would be quite a bit of crossover but then I'm not entirely sure where your taste-centre(quiet at the back there) would lie. Are you quite gothy?

Quote:

I would DIE to here Nicky sing that song. It would quite possibly be my favourite thing ever, other than Fleetwood Mac's Tusk (which is partly the song, and partly that they hoovered up an inordinate amount of coke, hired a baseball stadium and a marching band, and filmed the whole circus just because they could)

Quote:

Ah yes, that makes sense. Very depressing though if Nicky had any offers on the table other than RCA - perhaps a company with some actual vision.

It's business, innit? Everything's available for a price.

[quote]Whotf would buy a slot for Sam C?![quote]

Hmm. Well, who knows. Might have something to do with Sam C being a buff young ting. Nepotistic favours. There's all sorts of things that could come into play. But given he already had a fair sized twitter following, he's been around the block. I believe he's been supporting one of Louis' acts on tour previously as well.

Sorry. I'm a terrible night-owl. Or a very good one, depending on your viewpoint. Which if one were actually an owl (like Red) could be almost anywhere.

If it's any consolation I'm supposed to be up early tomorrow to fulfil godfather duties.

How did you guess that?! That's scary. Yes, yes I am

I do like a lot of different stuff tbf. But my absolute favourite is first half of the 70s Bowie, the Ziggy Stardust album is utter perfection imho.

Quote:

I agree. I guess we'll see what happens after the album's out, perhaps they're not locked into the same type of contract as the actual winner *crosses fingers*

Oooh yes, he did, didn't he. Did Abi too? For some reason that's in my head but it seems terribly unlikely.

Well, you mentioned Bauhaus earlier in the thread. You also mentioned Swedish Goth Metal and being a goth at school. So, you know, it was a stab in the gothic dark…

As for Bowie, I've always thought Ziggy Stardust was overrated (don't kill me), Hunky Dory is his best album imo. I met him once. Did I (shamelessly) mention that?

You may be thinking of the Abi connection to JA - I believe she played gigs with him before he was on XF.

Oh. Right. That would probably explain it then

Your memory is clearly rather better than mine!

I'm not talking to you any more.

Ahh. I wonder if that helped her get on the show, or if she played the gigs because she was getting on the show, or if it's just a big coincidence.

For preferring Hunky Dory. Or for meeting him. If it's the latter it was literally 5 seconds so I wouldn't be overly jealous

Coincidence I think. A lot of these people seem to know each other, presumably from knocking around on the same circuits beforehand.

I was going to write 'No no don't be silly' but I think I'll just leave it hanging and hope that guilt catalyses some serious motivation. It would be awful to spell out my machinations in text form and give myself away, but thankfully I am just thinking this so it's all ok.

For Hunky Dory. I mean it's got brilliant stuff on it but Ziggy is more consistently brilliant. Life On Mars is probably my favourite song ever though, that or Starman.

I suppose, it's the same up here, I just kind of assumed it's because scotland's so much smaller.
