A bit like that singer Charlie Brown (?) who had a top 10 hit early last year. He's faded back into obscurity by the looks of things.
I wouldn't be surprised if that happens. I never understood the appeal of Charlie Brown, and I don't understand the appeal of Elyah Fox. It all screams of "been there, done that, etc...". They could sing each others songs and you wouldn't notice much difference.”
Well, me neither, to be honest. I understand he'd been hawking himself round record companies in the school holidays with his songs so he's ambitious and he writes, which is fair enough*, and it's a half decent song in a very by-the-numbers-current-sound kinda way. I checked the video out but I must say I instantly forgot it. He's good looking, I suppose, but in a very bland, provincial-gay-club-in-the-early-90s way.
But, you know, this is where I come back to the whole writes-their-own-songs false authenticity that some fans cling onto so keenly. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter who has written a song, if it's a
good song and it's delivered well. A song should always be autonomous from it's creator(s), and most of the best music has come about from a coming together of disparate inputs, whether it be two people ala Lennon/McCartney or Gilmour/Waters, or more. That's not to say music by committee is a good thing, clearly it's not, but what makes Nicky stand out for me is his ability to deliver a song, written by whoever, purely through his voice. Honestly, there's more musicality in his delivery of a single line of a song than there is in many singer's entire performances (Hello Tamera!).
