Is there a certain scene in a film that you feel goes on far too long? You like the film otherwise, but that particular scene annoys you because it's dragged out for far too long?

I was watching a bit of Back to the Future the other day, first time I've seen it for a good few years. It was the scene when Marty is just about to return to 1985 and they're about to do the Delorian-struck-by-lightening thing.

It got to the bit where the wire from the clock tower got messed up and Doc has to climb the tower and sort it out. Bloody hell, it just seemed to go on forever and ever. Somehow, the idea of the guy plugging the wire back in had to be dragged out for what seemed like ages! I ended up getting really annoyed by it and it's tainted my view of the film a little bit!

What are yours?

The wedding scene in The Deer Hunter goes on for what seems like days...

The cold turkey sequence in The French Connection 2. Could use some trimming. Otherwise I really like the film.

I didn't used to have the patience to sit through the entire star gate sequence in 2001: A Space Odyssey, but I have now, and I find the whole thing terrifying.

The collapsing skyscraper scene in Transformers 3 went on for so long, I'm not even sure it can still be deemed a scene...

I agree about the Deer Hunter. In fact,as a three hour film, I always felt it could have (should have?) made a cracking two hour film, without any ill effects!

The Quidditch games in the Harry Potter films.
Did they HAVE to have a Quidditch game in EVERY one of them ??

The random-anecdotes-during-a-car-ride scene in Killing Them Softly.

The Kojaku's speech scene in Sam Fuller's The Crimson Kimono.
In fact, I was seriously tempted to edit it out because not only it's a tad too long, it's utterly bullshit. But it's Fuller's vision, so I killed the temptation. I will just endure with each rewatch. Boo hoo.

Django Unchained could have done with losing around 30 minutes. Plus, QT's cameo("G'day mate. Strewth - gone walkabout, etc.).

The whole of the Hobbit should be a 4 hour film (if need be.). How is it logical to make 3 films out of a book with a third of the pages of The Lord of the Rings. Will watch them all though.

As a reader of the books Quidditch does not feature in the film nearly as much as it does in the books so thank your lucky stars it was kept to a minimum!

Quidditch World Cup? Although granted it was a sort of prologue to the story and the actual match wasn't shown.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

It's the eagles, this must be the end?
No, they're in the bedroom, this must be the end?
No, there's a coronation now, this must be the end?
No wait, now they're off to the grey havens. This is the end?
No, Sam has to come home first, is this it?
It is?
Thank fk for that!

The strange disco/rave scene near the beginning of The Matrix Reloaded. Seemed to go on interminably when I first watched it, though strangely not so much the second time.

And the endless wedding in The Godfather could've been a lot shorter too.

Regards

Mark

As much as I love the film surely the king of overly long scenes has to be Heaven's Gate. I understand Michael Cimino's attention for detail and need for authenticity but is there a need to have a waltz sequence that lasts for 5 minutes and bares no relevance to the plot of the film?

Kill Bill Vol 2. (contains spoilers below if you haven't seen it)

I was excited for her to get back to knocking off some more assassins on her list and getting to Bill, but instead she gets shot, shoved in a box and buried underground. Then has an arse-achingly long sequence looking back to being taught by some martial arts master.
So technically part of the plot rather than one scene but sheesh it just went on forever and I was starting to lose interest.
I was thinking 'just get out of the box already'.

Definitely this. In fact, the conclusion of LoTR/ROTK; is this the end? No, have to say goodbye still.

But strangely I miss the Scouring Of The Shires from the books. (I know it's touched on, but...)

The strange disco/rave scene near the beginning of The Matrix Reloaded. Seemed to go on interminably when I first watched it, though strangely not so much the second time.
And this . I always f-fwd through Zion rave scene. And Revolutions mecha defense seemed interminable also. Enough already...

Any complaints about The Deer Hunter are rendered meaningless by the director, Michael Cimino's next film, Heaven's Gate, which is 4 hours long and slowest paced film I've ever seen by some margin.

In fact, there's a roller skating sequence in Heaven's Gate that's perfect for this thread- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IiNlthlz1d8
