Garlic Mushrooms Indian Restaurant

I recently had garlic mushrooms as a starter at an Indian restaurant and it was delicious. It wasn't made with a creamy sauce it was slightly caramelised and so moreish that I could have eaten it as a main.

Has anyone else had it or made it as I'm trying to find the recipe.

I've never seen garlic mushrooms as a starter, but I know a lot of Indians have mushroom bhaji as a side dish?

That sounds nice but covering the pan and cooking on a low heat won't caramelise the mushrooms, it will stew them.

They might not necessarily have been an Indian dish though.

Our two local Indian takeaways have Garlic Mushroom starters 'Mushrooms cooked in garlic butter and served on a puri' £2.95. Not had one for years but they are jolly good if i remember correctly.

Thanks for posting this, I saw it when I searched. The dish I had contained some spices I couldn't determine. Not strong or pungent.

Fenugreek or cumin maybe?

Maybe fenugreek as I know how cumin tastes. I might email the restaurant, we're going back to St.Davids at Easter and I can't wait that long to have it again.

If you get it, could you post or PM it? What I had did not have any strong spices, just the garlic, so it may well be the right recipe for that.

When I find the recipe I'll share it. My OH has curry delivered when he's on night shift and has ordered it before so i'll try and email the takeaway he uses.

Garlic as such is strong enough, I don't think it needs more overpowering spices.

And as has been pointed out, just because it's served at an Indian restaurant doesn't necessarily mean it's an Indian dish.

Just spent four days there.
Was it a quite small restaurant in one of the side streets?
If you wan a decent pub meal take a short ride up the coast and try here (reserve a table just to be sure)

It's not on the menu but I had chilli beef in soy and ginger sauce with sticky rice - excellent.

Sorry I missed the replies, yes it was on a side street. We've eaten at the Sloop Inn many times, it's very good .

I think the magic ingredient in the garlic mushrooms is Asafoetida, also known as Hing. I recently purchased some from an organic shop and it's way more pungent than the Schwarz version. I've used it in Dale and the flavour reminded me of the garlic mushrooms.
