Emmerdale again ahead of Eastenders last night...happening a lot on Mondays now, and Emm is fairly quiet at the moment...think this will continue and only become more pronounced during the week in the middle of the month.

After that you'd expect it the gap to shorten again as I suspect Emm will quieten down while EE is building up to its new producer's work. Then again, we said the gap would close over a month ago I am sure...

Viewing figures are erratic, even CS has dropped below 6m viewers on occasion, EE went painfully low on BBC Two during a Wimbledon week. The fact that EE is currently rating 7m+ (on par with EM) will reassure producers that viewers are still sticking with the show.

I do not see EE becoming a 10m per night show, times change as do viewing habits.

not sure, but as the BARB programme matching is done by "audio", surely any delayed viewing (even by PVR) won't be able to distinguish whether the viewing occurred because a repeat or original showing was selected - MikeTeevee may have knowledge of what is done wrt PVR viewing...

It deserved more viewers than it got, (I went 1.2m on the DSRG) - had this been a BBC One airing, it would have got triple the viewers surely - due to default viewing.

Sorry I'm not trying to muddy any waters. I have no channel alliance here, just an interest in statistics and the way data is compiled and compared.

I had seen somewhere that the on demand viewing is attributed to the last showing available. I think this would be a by-product of "repeats" not being on the on demand system as such, its just the first showing which is added and then you can watch as and when. So if you select to watch the programme, but a subsequent linear repeat has since aired it would be attributed to the repeat in the official figures.

I am not sure entirely if that is true, hence I asked the question.

I'm amazed the C4 show is as high as it was, though looking at its competition it can't have had much if any crossover audience with the other 9pm shows.

Good for Doc Martin. It never massively surprises me when high rating dramas can't sustain huge figures forever, the likes of New Tricks, Doctor Who, Lewis etc have always fluctuated.

I loathe the day when Downton "only" pulls in 7.5-8m overnight (and surely that will happen before it ends for good) and the usual people start squealing with glee at its "demise". Of course the same could be said for Midwife, but given that is newer you'd expect it to hold up for longer, since Downton is currently thriving on its fourth series which feels like could be its peak.

Emmerdale 7.14m (36.3%) at 7pm on ITV adding 115k (0.5%) on +1.

EastEnders 7.02m (30.4%) at 8pm on BBC One. BBC Three's repeat screening secured 408k (3.0%) at 10.30pm.

I would be amazed if EE or EM started averaging 8m for a first showing in the near future.

You're right of course but a 1.4m total for factual on Five opposite a big hitter on ITV is still a great result, particularly taking into account some of the dire ratings they've recorded in the past week or two.

Hopefully they can get some momentum going now. Countdown to Murder, which was trailed on air during last night's programme, looks absolutely fascinating and a potentially standout piece of factual content. But the slot looks incredibly tough with Truckers, Breathless and Educating Yorkshire to compete with.

Channel 5 show a wide variety of programmes and films, they can be a mixed bag at times. UK Crime factual, UK reality shows, US action movies, US drama, UK/US Sport. I applaud them for getting decent ratings as the 5th channel - and I can see why it is celebrated when they beat one of the four bigger channels.

Surely if catch-up viewing was added to the last repeat airing so significantly, said repeats would have huge consolidated figures? Say 3/4m+. And because they don't make that much difference to the figures, it seems a bit of a funny issue to get worked up about anyway? Just my thoughts.

Yes EE got more viewers with its repeat showing - this is nearly always the case. Let's not forget here that Emmerdale's +1 is up against EE itself! I think it's its second Thursday showing (I can't remember exactly) where Emm can often get a bigger +1 audience than normal.

Either way, up to you whether you include repeats or not - obviously EE used to beat Emm without factoring repeats in, in overnights, regularly and 100% on Mondays, so it is still a worry for them. Of course they still might be if Emm itself was also rubbish right now but by and large, it isn't.

As for 8 million overnights - EE technically should be the first to achieve it "regularly", but that won't be for a while, however I highly suspect that Emmerdale might hit it first this autumn - one of the episodes during its big October week should be very high

As I said, I'm not really overly bothered by the figures for each individual show or channel themselves. I'm more interested in the "how" of the data capture. Just an interesting point more than any large change. (Plus from a statistics point of view it would make comparisons less clear, even if the impact is small).

I think soaps serve a very valuable purpose, they entertain people by the million 5 nights a week. If we estimate that 10m+ viewers watch soaps, CS has a very high catchment, EE and EM are some way behind. Arguably CS has the most default viewers, ratings for EE & EM are more volatile.

To finally put the +1/+2.5 debate to rest, shows ought be compared like with like when possible. EE had more total viewers then EM up to last night's 2am BARB cut-off. EM was slightly ahead on first viewing only. CS won by a street either way.

I am not sure when EE will start to continually average 8m for first showing, but maybe viewers will increase in the darker months ahead.

I agree, peoples viewing habits have changed and soaps are no longer the ratings powerhouses they once were, that's why I'm pleased to see drama such as Downton,NT, Doc Martin ect rate so high as it shows that exploring new ideas and putting faith in established drama does pay off.

They could always try the trusted method of temporarily boosting figures and kill off a popular character, give the ratings a dead Kat bounce.

Nice to see this finally above 3m. I think the celebrity editions will help it even more this autumn.

Is it just me or is that a rather poor rating for Monday Night Football? Everton v Newcastle isn't a bad fixture.

BIB - DTC's stamp on the show won't be visible for a while after that. There's apparently a lot of furious re-storylining going just ahead of and around Christmas - and that's where I'd expect change to be more apparent.

I think the really big question is whether or not Emmerdale can build on what it's achieved then maintain that. It should by rights have had a massive story waiting in the wings to capitalise on the interest from 'Killer Cameron' - but I can't detect any sign of that as yet. Between now and November is key for Emmerdale - if it's really going to get its act together and face down EastEnders. Otherwise I'd be very surprised if the new regime there doesn't get the show to bounce back and Emmerdale will be back down to the third soap ...

It took a month rather than a week as I predicted! But at last.

The resting of the show will pay off in the longer run though.

2 hours of football 8-10pm and two hours of talk 7-8pm and 10-11pm.

Would expect the 10-11pm hour is dragging down the 4 hour average.

Above 3m seems a bit higher than usual. Really strong figure.

Re University Challenge...

At least that's one old ITV quiz show that ITV won't be able to resurrect as part of their expanding range of dynamic and ground-breaking new programming....


And it would also mean only BBC shows timeshifted massively. We know that Downton the other Christmas got a 3m+ timeshift for its first ITV showing, which presumably it wouldn't have got had the figures been added to the later showing.

I just wanted to nip this one in the bud, if we could, before it gained traction and people started dredging it up in the future.
