In the DQF process the acquisitions budget has been cut and BBC One try to keep them out of primetime. Films are now pretty much reserved for late night and high days and holidays.

[quote=Zac Quinn;68759688]I don't think there's any doubt about that. IIRC ITV won primetime every Saturday for several weekends running this summer with a rerun of most of the Harry Potter series, goodness knows what a classic franchise like Shrek which hasn't been so over-hyped could get for a repeat run.[/

Certainly beats another Totally Saturday or The puppet GameShow.

What did they air in the summer months when Casulty took it's break before it went all year round?

If they can show how to train your dragon on the cbbc channel on a random Friday afternoon then I'm sure they can show a Saturday night family film

If it isn't renewed you can add a percentage of failure to that list. He had a much grander vision for XF in the USA when it launched than is the reality now. I am not sure returning to XF here will be an entirely sweet experience if the show there is axed. Although American ratings are weird given the ratings spread isn't all that different to here and yet there are 5 x the number of people.

And they tend to do very well, as many of the target 16-34 audience lap them up and can stay up later. The big animated films are often used to provide a good lead-in to a new UK-produced programme.

As I said earlier, expect to see some Dreamworks Animation titles at about 17:30 on a Saturday night this January, leading into The Voice.

Back from a fortnight's holiday this evening (have I missed much, and did anyone miss me? ). Due to unforeseen circumstances, my first British viewing for 16 days happened to be Emmerdale.

Could the recent close proximity to EastEnders have anything to do with the various shouty, gobby, laaaudmarrrrrf characters and outlandish improbable storylines causing some confusion amongst soap viewers? Or maybe EE is a bit too workaday and realistic?

With all the tarty Geordie slappers in Em these days, there's a hint of Geordie Shore (one of my new favourite shows) in there too.

Didn't spot anyone thrust an arm inside a ewe though, like in the old days.

Perhaps Countryfile has cornered the market for that sort of thing now?

There'll be rugby some Saturdays as well though on BBC1? With The Voice in January does that mean no more Let's Dance For Comic Relief and/or Britrain's Brightest?

Please say yes! Somebody PLEASE say yes!

Alpha and Omega isn't from Dreamworks according to Wiki.

Dreamworks Animation has quite a mighty back catalogue. I can see some of these leading into The Voice to try to give it an extra fillip, as happened with Shrek and also Pixar's Wall-E last year:

Spoiler
Antz
The Prince of Egypt
The Road to El Dorado
Chicken Run
Shrek
Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron
Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas
Shrek 2
Shark Tale
Madagascar
Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit
Over the Hedge
Flushed Away
Shrek the Third
Bee Movie
Kung Fu Panda
Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa
Monsters vs. Aliens
How to Train Your Dragon
Shrek Forever After

Later releases (whether BBC One airs them will of course depend on the length of the deal):

Spoiler
Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted (June 8, 2012)
Rise of the Guardians (November 21, 2012)
The Croods (March 22, 2013)
Turbo (July 17, 2013)

Upcoming releases:

Spoiler
Mr. Peabody & Sherman (March 7, 2014)
How to Train Your Dragon 2 (June 13, 2014)
Home (November 26, 2014 )
The Penguins of Madagascar (March 27, 2015)
B.O.O.: Bureau of Otherworldly Operations (June 5, 2015)
Kung Fu Panda 3 (December 23, 2015)
Mumbai Musical (March 18, 2016)
How to Train Your Dragon 3 (June 17, 2016)
Trolls (November 4, 2016)
”

Yes I was just about to post something similar. DreamWorks have 15 of the top 50 all time animated grossing films and a hugely impressive back catalogue(as you say) which has served the BBC well over the years. I think this appears a bit undervalued by some posts.

Films are strange, the days when premieres actually meant something substantial are long gone and its largely those films that make the family sit down that have any influence on terrestrial tv. Thus I can see why the Beeb really only try at Christmas and New Year and DreamWorks titles do seem to fit the bill for that. Obviously if Disney and Pixar have gone its a blow (though everything about film rights seems muddled these days) but its not the end of the world as long as there is still some kind of feed for the few slots that matter.

Interesting to see Deep Impact was a (part) DreamWorks film-wasn't that the last film to get a 10 million plus audience in the UK? I seem to remember it being shown on a Thursday evening slot. It seems DreamWorks Films and DreamWorks Animation are no longer affiliated according to one site-so not sure if the BBC deal covers both.

The same argument could apply for I'm a Celebrity - but ratings count. I do agree though CBS should free up an hour by simply axing one airing per cycle of both The Amazing Race and Survivor and instead air one in the autumn and one in the Spring. It could help both shows - but in reality I suspect Amazing Race would soon get dumped completely and Survivor would return to two series a year.

His album is out this year, so job already done.

Exactly - and for The Indian Doctor of all things. I know they have to fit any local drama in when they can, but 9pm Thursday for what is a daytime drama is nonsense. They'd have been better off dropping Antiques Roadshow for a couple of weeks.

LOL - I'm sure I probably said it in August, July, June and every time the topic cropped up. And technically only two hours of the ITV schedule would be the same as last year.

BBC1 isn't going to venture from the norm - Christmas Day is really just a reflection of how poor their entertainment state is, and with a weak comedy slate at the moment they don't have many options in that avenue either. Miranda won't happen, Mrs Browns Boys probably will, but they need something really to air at 9pm too. The revival of Gavin and Stacey can't come soon enough for them.

Not just family films too - thanks to Internationals and this season at least the FA Cup the BBC should take advantage of not having Match of the Day once a month and air films in a relatively decent post-watershed slot.

“The History Boys. Pretty stellar cast list and was BAFTA-nominated.”

British TV is so poor really at promoting British Film (as is British cinema). Films like this have a cast a TV drama would die for and as a TV drama it would probably bring in a very healthy rating - but they're rarely backed as much as they should be for their TV premiere (both by channels and viewers), and more often than not channels (including the BBC) would rather screen a Hollywood flop than give a decent slot to a British film.

The problem with who do you think you are, is that it depends on the subject, as its been going for years, they've ran out of interesting/crowd pleasing celebs. I think Gary linear is the only one to pass 5 million this year, coincidence??? Maybe it should be scheduled at 8 next year

ROBBIE!!

You have so much to catch up on!

The Voice changes, Educating Yorkshire's success, Great British Bake Off becoming a ratings juggernaut. And you're back in time to see Downton slaughter BBC1 on Sunday. GeorgeS has booked time in on Monday morning to talk to you about that!

Who knows but it is intriguing. Where will the new McIntyre show fit in? I agree about Lets Dance, it had its moment when it beat the tired Ant and Dec in its first series but its last two series have been dreadfully poor. It deserves the bin-but what will link to Comic/Sport relief?

Britains Brightest should air in summer imo.

Dreamworks SKG and Dreamworks Animation are two companies, one is private and the public. DWA have been hit and miss but they are still a big player although Illumination Entertainment, Sony and Blue Sky have eaten into their market share. It is surprising that its still independent, I would have Warner Bros or Paramount would buy them given neither has a animation division to compete with Fox, Disney, Universal and Sony.

Film rights must be up for renewal as we've not seen any films from Warner Bros or Paramount from 2009/2010. WB's only 2009 film that debuted on terrestrial was Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.

I see the usual guff about BBC1's stale and predictable Christmas Day line up has started - even though ITV will trot out 1 hour Emmerdale Shore-enders, 1 hour Coro, 2 hour Downton, with the ordinary unfestive line up bulked up with filler from the YBF/POGsDogs/Family Fortunes bargain bin. Whilst BBC1 airs a night of varied special programmes, of its most popular and most loved programmes, which largely changes each year but once happened to be basically but not quite the same a couple of years in a row....

Just reading the Daily Mail ariticle on Celebrity Super Spa, one line especially stood out:

Quote:
“The show – hosted by Eoghan McDwermott and Laura Jackson – is expected to return with a new crop of celebrities next year.”

There is absolutely no logic in renewing Celebrity Super Spa, crap, rates badly and generates zero social buzz. If Channel 5 are serious about finding a second BB-size juggernaut, then they should buy the UK rights to Survivor and launch it around the January CBB.

I saw that SCD walloped TXF in their first bout the other Saturday and crushed into the dirt ITV's hopeless SCD rip off.

And Masterchef besting a crucial England world cup qualifier.

Was there anything else?

I'm sure when they commissioned it that was the intention.

But absolutely no chance it will come back with the numbers it achieved. None at all.

It rated so badly they had to cut an entire episode out of the run. That says it all really about how big a failure it was.
