Eastenders is a better show in the demos than Emmerdale. It has a richer audience than Emmerdale and many more younger viewers. It is something which Itv would love to have, even in its current state. Also no one on the street talks about Emmerdale unless you work in a nursing home or bingo halls, many more people talk about Eastenders. Eastenders is still a valuable property for the BBC and will not be axed any time soon. The people saying it should be axed are mainly Itv fans who want those slots free of Eastenders so there's easier competition for itv's shows.

Of course, when the 'more desirable' demo is discussed for XF vs SCD its not a relevant factor. As long as its being 'crushed'. Whats it to be, demo or numbers ?

SCD's audience are richer than XFs. XF does not beat SCD in the upmarket ratings. Eastenders beats Emmerdale in almost everything: rich viewers, younger viewers, graduates, bankers, well-off middle classes etc. Emmerdale only beats Eastenders in the poor working class 55+ year olds. Adveretisers have no interest in flogging their products to those viewers!
Officially, by the way, Eastenders is still the No. 2 rating soap. So lets not talk about EE being third etc, the proper official ratings confirm EE is still 2nd.

Yeah, because they have nothing to spend it on. When X Factor's on form, as EastEnders might say, 'everyone's talking about it'. Strictly's just some mildly successful TV show.

I agree with you apart from the mildly successful bit. If it was ten years ago both SCD and XF would be getting 16-17m viewers by comparison.

I think you are going to extremes as per usual suggesting that EastEnders is watched by all these upmarket people in great numbers and Emmerdale is only watched by the lowest of the low. In my experience EastEnders is watched by the same types that would watch Jeremy Kyle or Loose Women, and who buy showbiz magazines, hence why EastEnders is generally on the front of the soap/TV mags (even now) more than anything else.

He didn't say they don't watch emmerdale he said MORE in the those demos watch ee than watch emmerdale and more in the over 55 watch emmerdale...
When X Factor was at its peak, what were the demographics like? Nice mix of old and young, men and women, rich and poor?

Barbara Windsor admitted herself on This Morning EE is down to the 3nd place soap right now. If the bbc thought the officials were more important LN would still be in a job right now.

Amazed Real Deal keeps getting recommissioned. It's no Bargain Hunt. Then again, ITV keep re-ordering blocks of Titchmarsh with similarly poor figures, with in Titchmarsh's case, hefty running costs for the studio.

I have to say that this is the least surprising thing I have seen this week so far.
1) Why would you stop watching EM half way through?
2) The big one. EastEnders has had a year of 0% drama, It's had 3 years of badly written plot's and unlikeable characters alienating it's once loyal audience. So it's no surprise that the audience didn't feel the urge to abandon Emmerdale half way through.
This is how I see it. Next year EastEnders need a good, well written year. That's all it need's to do. It need to have good plots exciting, gritty and realistic. It need to be believable and most of all Character driven. With the correct direction set out by DTC it can easily do that.This however is not going to pull back 1m viewers in a year it would probably pull back 500k. But then it need's to be strong in 2015, 2016, 2017...................... Consistent all the way. The audience will trickle back, it's happening to the ITV soaps right now.
It's going to be a very long term think this rebuilding, it can be done but it's going to be hard. DTC looks to have hit the ground running and has all the hallmarks of a success waiting to happen BUT! If he like his last two predecessors fails as well then EE will be past the point of fixing. Some think it already is but it isn't it's just in one mighty mess.
But you can't defend that rating, not one bit. But it will be fixed by storyline's and character driven drama not the ever decreasing circles we have had for 3 years.
I know I'm boring you all now but one last comment on the writers. The EastEnders writers get loads of stick due to the poor episodes they churn out. This Is not down to them being poor writers it's down to the totally lack of storyline's they are being given to write! It's the storyliners that are at fault here. They need decent stories.

Barbara Windsor doesnt know what she's talking about. Her acting is awful and she was disgraceful slagging off on a rival channel about a program which hired her for the best part of 20 years. No loyalty or class at all. Shes a turd, best left to the bingo adverts.

Eastenders might be in a 'state'. But statistically she was incorrect to say Eastenders was the third soap. According to official BARB figures, it is still the second soap. She shouldnt be saying such things on national television, defamating Eastenders with those remarks, when she's not got all the facts correct. Ive always thought there was something fishy about her.

They're stock piling in advance of I'm a Celeb - though no reason at all why they couldn't drop episodes of Emmerdale especially - losing an episode a week for 2-3 weeks isn't going to hurt ITV.

The show is hardly dead yet and already they are fighting over the legacy! Maybe he meant third not turd as in "Britains Third Soap"?
Richard Bacon revealed on his radio show yesterday that his agent was contacted by Itv to ask him to appear on Splash. He obviously declined. Apparently lots of D listers are rejecting offers to appear on the show, its lineup is set to be even worse than series 1!
