Not seen it yet but totally agree with your question about the scheduling. You'd've thought the very least they'd've done would be to air a couple of episodes in that slot before DA started.

Really bizarre - along with the decision to premier Atlantis slap bang in the middle of TXF next Saturday.

If this is new BBC One controller Charlotte Moore's influence, I can only assume her mission is to destroy any chance new shows have of making any impact and so weaken the channel she is in charge of. Is she being bribed by ITV?

It sad to see that some people in this thread are still jealous that ITV have the biggest drama on TV, which is increasing its audience every year in the US. I think 17million was its reach last series.

I must admit I did wonder why they didn't launch By Any Means in the slot What Remains had. It would have nearly run its course now and could have secured a reasonable audience. What Remains could have been on later in the Autumn. Maybe Monday-Thursday to big it up!

Don't be silly. There's no jealousy. There is however curiosity at why it became as big as it has? How does it differ from other costume dramas and what is it that keeps bringing in the viewers?

Behind your disguise, you are nearly becoming ITV's version of Samuel!

Well there you go! It is still a beast. Not surprising though. ITV have been promoting it very positively. Even the BBC were praising it yesterday. There was obviously a lot of people interested to see the aftermath of that Christmas Day death!

1) Watching the series might help. Particularly the first one which established it as a hit.

2) Maggie Smith.

Not sure, he doesnt seem to have much love for itv offerings, just the ratings, share and demographics for the more popular ones.

I watched an hour of the very first episode and got bored. Not for me.

BBC1 seemed to concede the slot by airing a low key new drama against it. Shouldve shown George Gently last night.

Very strong rating for Downton abbey.

Presumably that is for both showings?

Would mean 8.9/9m probably, about what was expected.

I'd imagine most of the posters on this thread don't watch DA - it's not cool on here to watch it

What happened to your "sense it in the air" theory that it would lose viewers and be the lowest series opener rating?

BBC1 didn't concede the slot. They did that last year with Andrew Marr's History of the World and got criticised for it. They offered a proper alternative this year, and still get criticised for "conceding" the slot.

I would have scheduled The Great British Year against DA and put By Any Means on Wednesdays.

I'm sure By Any Means wasn't commissioned as a 'low key new drama', any more than Atlantis was.

Both have, however, been given slots of doom in which they will struggle to flourish. If DA had got anything less than 8m it would have been a disaster given how much publicity the new series has had (especially from the Fellowes-adoring Tory press ... :yawn.

Given that Charlotte Moore's background is in factual, is this an attempt to steer programmes from her old department away from danger and let drama take the hit?

Excellent rating for the premiere, there is something about the stirring music and the editing. Maggie Smith is the most famous cast member, but the ensemble service staff really make the show work.

Looks like the Sunday XFactor is the episode most people are watching for the auditions.

I guess with BBC1 not offering an established drama as competition, the overnights for DA would be higher than last year. Probably means it will timeshift lower, but come out about the same. We can't judge until next Monday afternoon really.

And he backtracks, i though this drama was supposed o dent DA? They have put a good solid drama alongside it and it should have got a decent audience, its probably got a 4million odd rating.
